Up till about a week before my wedding I would have sworn up and down that I was going to wear a veil. I had so many reasons, including the Jewish idea that when you wear a veil, the spirits of all your decedents walk down the aisle with you. (Beautiful right?) Also, I really like Read more...

If you look at your dictionary or Wikipedia, you may find kitsch defined as ‘gaudy, cheap, and tacky.’ This description does not to justice to the international phenomenon we fondly know as kitsch. A word borrowed from the German language, its orginal meaning has it associated with tackiness and trashiness. Yet it is also fresh, funky and fabulous. You can find it all over the world, emboying different media and styles. There is a quirky kind of magic to it, an irrestible charm if you get to know it. What does it mean to you? Is there even such a thing as ‘too kitsch’ or ‘too much kitsch’? No! Of course not. I know it was alot of pictures, and thanks for looking!!! Minolta X-300, 35-70mm f/3.5 Macro The white mark at the top is a scratch on the negative, I'm useless at developing film without scratching it. As this photos has attracted a lot of interest and speculation I'll tell you a bit more about it. It was taken in 1995 when I was doing a photography evening class. It's of my sister, Holly, who was 15 at the time. She was generally a reluctant model but the only one I had at my disposal! I did a little set of photos of reflected portraits for my photography class. I found a broken mirror tile in a box at home and though it would make a good surface. As with most of the others from the series, it was taken upside down. It was lit with just a ceiling light. The feather thing was just something I used to cover up my sister's clothing because I didn't like what she was wearing, I think it was an old shirt. With b/w film I generally over-exposed to increase the contrast. I remember burning this one in at the edges.
Today is the last day of Tim Walker exhibition at the Somerset House. The curator in my opinion has done a really fantastic job at putting together his work. When I entered the exhibit, it felt like I was walking into a Tim Walker world with words across the walls, gigantic props positioned across the exhibit and even his photographs were placed onto wooden crates filled with straws. Tim Walker was and still is a major inspiration for most of my work. Many of his photos tell an epic tale and are staged so beautifully. Even though a lot of his themes come from well known fairy tales, he has managed to inject some sinister elements into them, twist them and present them in a quirky way. They are fairy tales for adults. At the entrance of Somerset House. From Tim Walker's Book
