We've discovered that the key to success in AP Biology lies with mastering the Insider's Language of the subject. People who score high on their exams have a strong working vocabulary in the subject tested. They know how to decode the course vocabulary and use this as a model for test success. People with a strong Insider's Language consistently: Perform better on their ExamsLearn faster and retain more informationFeel more confident in their coursesPerform better in upper level coursesGain more satisfaction in learningThe Advanced Placement Biology Vocabulary Workbook is different from traditional review books because it focuses on the exam's Insider's Language. It is an outstanding supplement to a traditional review program. It helps your preparation for the exam become easier and more efficient. The strategies, puzzles, and questions give you enough exposure to the Insider Language to use it with confidence and make it part of your long-term memory. The AP Biology Vocabulary Workbook is an awesome tool to use before a course of study as it will help you develop a strong working Insider's Language before you even begin your review. Learn the Secret to Success! After nearly 20 years of teaching Lewis Morris discovered a startling fact: Most students didn't struggle with the subject, they struggled with the language. It was never about brains or ability. His students simply didn't have the knowledge of the specific language needed to succeed. Through experimentation and research, he discovered that for any subject there was a list of essential words, that, when mastered, unlocked a student's ability to progress in the subject. Lewis called this set of vocabulary the \"Insider's Words\". When he applied these \"Insider's Words\" the results were incredible. His students began to learn with ease. He was on his way to developing the landmark series of workbooks and applications to teach this \"Insider's Language\" to students around the world.

We do human body systems at the end of AP Biology. I like to save my favorite for last. The only drawback is that by this time of year we are starting to lose some steam. I try to teach this unit almost entirely by activity. I started searching in early Spring for ideas of what to do with immunology. I found an article in the American Biology Teacher, "The Immune System Game" from the May 2015 issue. I decided to make my own "characters" for the game just to make copies a little easier. After a test run playing the game with my husband, I decided that I also needed to rewrite the directions in an easier to follow way. There are so many steps in the process and what you do changes depending on what cell from the body you are looking at. I opened a google drawing and made a flow chart of the directions. It seemed to work well with the class. The "bad" guys... We did run out of time before we got to simulate a viral infection. Next year, I'll have half of my groups "play" the bacterial infection and the other half "play" the viral infection. Then we'll have a group discussion about the differences. The "good" guys... I also found in the trials that even for the primary infection, the body ended up with a lot of immune cells--so it didn't demonstrate the advantage the pathogens have the first time around (in the primary immune response). We didn't have any trials where the pathogens won over the immune system. I've changed the flow chart to reflect an increased reproductive rate for pathogens and a decrease in the reproductive rate of the macrophages. Here are the files I made for the game: Key to Immune Characters Antibodies B-cells and Helper T cells Cytotoxic T cells Phagocytes Bacterial Pathogens Virus Infected Cells Plasma Cells and Cytokines Immune Game Flowchart (Bacterial) Immune Game Flowchart (Viral) After the simulation, students diagram the immune response on a white board using the cards from the immune system game. They certainly understood the time difference between the primary and secondary immune responses after this game. Next year, I also want to emphasize humoral vs. cell mediated responses in their diagrams. Update: I've worked on making this virtual and you can read about it here.
Sound familiar? It is the time of the year when the AP Biology teacher (me) begins to panic. There are only "x" number of teaching days left, and there is still "y" amount of material that must be covered! PANIC! Actually, my students are great. But it is getting on toward spring time in my part of the country. The students are tired....very tired! They have worked hard all year, participated in a ton of extracurricular activities, and they are just worn out!! It is a difficult time of the year to be sure. I must continue to teach hard everyday to get all of the material covered. At the same time, I need to get my students motivated for reviewing for the exam. It is a fine line to balance. Push them hard, but don't overload them. I am fortunate to have a 70 minute class period. (Don't kill me....I realize how lucky I am!!) Starting this week, we are going to spend the first 15 to 20 minutes of each class period reviewing. I have written a set of review PowerPoints to use just for this purpose. These are not teaching PowerPoints. They are simply slide after slide of questions and answers. I generally let the students get into groups and make a game out of it. The group getting the most questions correct wins a prize. Little Debbie Snake Cakes are a particular favorite award for my students. Freebie: Here is the link to one of my review PowerPoints that I have in my TpT store. It is on organic compounds. You can easily delete some of my slides and add more slides of your own. Click picture to download. If you like the free PowerPoint, you might be interested in my entire set of 25 different review PowerPoints. Best of luck to you and your students on the AP exam!! :)

Click picture to download PowerPoint. The key to success is REVIEWING!! If you have taught AP (Advanced Placement) Biology, then you know that the amount of material that must be covered before the exam is daunting. I have had great success with my AP exam scores. I normally have between 60 to 80 students take the exam each year. For the 2011 exam, I had 65 students sit for the exam, and we had an average score of 4.3. Admittedly, this is one of the best years I have ever had. It was a great group of students who were highly motivated. I am convinced that the key to success is how you review the material with your students. I begin to review with my students on February 1. I am fortunate to have a 70 minute class each day. I give a prayer of thanks for this each and every day, and I realize that most AP teachers do not have this luxury. Beginning on February 1, I use the first 10 to 15 minutes of class to review a topic that we have previously covered earlier in the school year. The remaining class time is used to cover new material. The day before the AP exam in May, I am still reviewing and still covering new material!! We have to convince our students that they must review, review, review before the exam. I have written a set of powerpoints that I use for review. These are not teaching powerpoints. These are just slide after slide of question and answer. The students are not going to remember every little detail, so I try to make sure that they are solid on the basic facts. Here is one of my review PowerPoints that I hope you will download. It covers the characteristics of carbon and the organic compounds. AP Review: Carbon and Organic Compounds ---- It's FREE!! I hope you find this useful for your classroom. Happy Teaching!

Cell membranes and the transport of materials across membranes is fundamental to a study of biology. There are, fortunately, many good lab activities that can be carried out when covering this material. My students just finished doing this lab today. It is called "The Effect of Concentration on the Rate of Diffusion", and you can download my version of this lab for free. The concept is very simple. First, the students fill dialysis bags with varying concentrations of sugar solutions. The bags are then massed. Each dialysis bag is placed in a cup of distilled water. The cups are allowed to sit for some period of time. I have the students wait for 30 minutes, pull the bags out of the cups, and determine the final mass of the bag. We get very good results in just thirty minutes. If necessary, you can leave them overnight and get the final mass the next day. The results are dramatic. Students will clearly see the relationship between solute concentration and the rate of diffusion across the membrane. Results are graphed showing the direct relationship between solute concentration and rate of diffusion. This is one of my favorite labs and is a free download. I hope you doing this lab as much as I.
