Sitting at my desk, my fingers dance across my laptop keys as I reminisce about a night that changed my life. Negotiating the delicate territory of memory lane, I can still vividly recall That Evening in Zurich, an evening that serendipitously introduced me to Lily Collins. Zurich… nestled within the heart of Switzerland, it’s often …

Every once in a while, objects of interest come across my desk that hold certain features that lift them just beyond our understanding. The enigmatic Newton Stone is one such artifact, not only because this ancient monolith is inscribed with a carved message written in a mysterious and currently unsolved language, but also because the writing can be interpreted using at least five ancient alphabets.

Editor's Picks: Our Own Amazing Honeymoons
Lady in the Lake Lady in the Lake is painted using inspiration of a style of painting from John Singer Sergeant, and work from the Renaissance timeframe. This is the first piece in my Drowning in Plain Sight series. Quite a few more pieces have been done since this first one, but it is still my favorite of the series. I have this painting as a print on canvas and it hangs across the room from my desk. I absolutely love it. This piece was done in soft pastels on a pastel paper surface that I made using a gritty surface on a thick board mount. It is 10x8". It is the first piece in this series. Size of the piece: 10x8 inches Location this is based on: This is from one of my AI creations and is a fictional location. Inspiration: I wanted something with very painterly keywords with a lady in a lake and I was very happy with the samples I was being given to work from. Painting style: This is my impressionistic realism style. Medium: This was painted using soft pastels of varying brands. Original or Print: This is an original hand painted piece. Signed by the Artist: This is signed by the artist on the back. Are there prints available of this piece? This is a published painting and you can find prints at Fine Art America at: fineartamerica.com/featured/lady-in-the-lake-kimberly-leclaire.html (It looks amazing in a wrapped canvas) Is this part of a series? This is the first one in my Drowning in Plain Sight Series. Are there any YouTube videos made of this piece? No, I did not tape this one, but I do have some videos of other projects. Surface material: This was done on pastel board with a gritty surface. Method of shipping: This piece will be shipped flat in a cardboard mailer to prevent the artwork from being bent. Framing: This image does NOT come with a frame, it is unframed. If you need options for framing, please contact me BEFORE you place your order. This assignment gives students practice crafting a basic argument, as well as developing speaking and listening skills in a low stakes way. Instead of debating in front of all of their peers, everyone in the class is debating at the same time, across a desk or virtually across their computers. This assessment includes a clear, standards-based rubric that focuses on their written argument and listening notes. Present the students with an introduction (or review) of basic argumentation including claim, evidence, analysis, and addressing the opposition. Then, they will research and write their argument on a topic that is appropriate to their age and argumentative experience (with teacher discretion). Then, after practicing verbally making their argument and rebutting their opponent, the class reconvenes to discuss their takeaways. I find my students are not speaking enough in their classes (including my own)! It’s important to me that students see speaking, especially presenting an argument, as an integral part of the learning process, and not simply an activity reserved for “speech” class. Included in this resource: •Detailed teacher notes •Presentation introducing/reviewing basic argumentation and outlining the steps of the assignment (with editable google slides) •Rubric (with editable google doc) All components delivered as one pdf, with links to editable google docs of the assignment presentation and rubric so you can simply make a copy and make your changes. If your students need to work on supporting claims with evidence prior to this summative assessment, check out my Evidence bags bundle or any of the individual lessons to build students’ skills. If you are looking for a summative assessment where students are also graded on their presentation/speaking skills, check out this Summative Debate Assignment for any novel. Two news stories came across my desk this week that highlight the persistence of dangerous and wrongheaded ideas with roots in the Satanic Panic era of the 80’s and 90’s. These practices and techniques have little to do with genuine scientific rigor but maintain an outsized cultural influence.

This lovely Crucilobiceras ammonite piece measures 11 mm across its widest part. It was found on the Jurassic coast on Charmouth Beach. It is approximately 195 million years old! It would be perfect for a collection. Please note - All of my ammonites have been brushed with a brass brush - this brings out the golden shine and with exposure to air over time the ammonite will dull in colour - I have varnished this ammonite to prolong its shine! Photos are taken under a desk lamp. POSTAGE: The default postage offered on all international postage on my listings is standard airmail which is a untracked service. Postage upgrades to tracked/signed are available at checkout.
