We can’t control all the things, but we can control how we respond to them. This piece is about staying aware of how we can use our power and energy to change our experience of any situation we find ourselves in. The Color Cloud series is an exploration of the visceral experience of color - I’m always pursuing that feeling of being submerged and surrounded by the lush, comforting, energizing vibe color can create.

chloe ~ watercolors and oil pastel on muslin i didn't paint much last week; it was a week of selling stuff that i no longer use. on the one hand it seems almost miraculous the way money just appears in your paypal account, and on the other, you know you've spent a lot of time doing stuff to make it happen! i think that my creek painting days are coming to an end... it's getting shady out there and the temps have really dropped. so these may be the last of the creek people. i guess then they'll be art room people. ; ) i have been stitching a lot. when i can't focus on painting, i love to sit and do the running stitch. i've finished the heart since i took this, but i still have more to do on the tie. this is silk from recycled saris on walnut ink stained muslin. one thing i've learned this summer is that walnut ink quickly fades in sunlight. it won't take long before this will look like plain 'ol unbleached muslin... isabel ~ watercolors and oil pastel on muslin back to painting... i used the paint that bled through the page from chloe for much of isabel. i like this idea. working on muslin is surely my first love... i love the way it looks so much! dana ~ watercolors and oil pastel on old book page here's my whole set-up for painting creek people. everything i need fits right in the watercolor case - daniel smith travel brush (the black thing), paper stump for blending, and a piece of oil pastel. i also painted a creek person in this book. i got it on my trip - it's the sweetest little book of line drawings by matisse. i'm not going to paint on all of the pages - just some of them... it's very interesting doing this... watercolors and oil pastel on book page i like most of the drawings in the book way too much to paint over them... i'm going to change the way i respond to comments... i'm going to e-mail my response to each person instead of posting it here - unless someone asks a question, and then i'll post the answer here. just so you know... : ) i'm going out of town again this week! roxanne and i are going to ashland tomorrow to play, and then later in the week i'm going south to visit friends... i hope you have a beautiful week! * * * A crazy life, what! Particularly in view of the fact that I was supposed to be at work on the great American novel. Now and then, of course, I did write a few pages... My dodge now was watercolors. I dabbled in them, as the expression goes. It was a joy to go on turning them out like a madman - perhaps because I didn't have to prove anything, either to the world or myself. I wasn't hepped on becoming a painter. Not at all. I was simply wriggling out of the straitjacket. ~ Henry Miller, 'To Paint is to Love Again' XO

These are still a work in progress...but I am already loving them so I wanted to post what I had so far! We began our project with the book LMNO Peas by Keith Baker. It is a fun alphabet book about these tiny green peas that show action. It is a great book for talking about action verbs and having students come up with verbs that would go with each alphabet letter. I had mine try and predict what action the peas would be doing as I turned each page. By the end of the book they were getting much better with developing their action verbs! One of my friends that teaches Kindergarten had given me these great alphabet stamps that she had purchased from Lakeshore. They are jumbo and perfect for little hands. So, naturally, printmaking came to mind and who better to go along with the alphabet book than the king of printmaking....JASPER JOHNS! So we did an artist study on Johns and I displayed several copies of various art pieces in the room. Then my 2nd and 3rd graders completed an art writing piece about Johns where they reflected on interesting or intriguing aspects of his work and stated some facts that they had learned about Johns. They glued these writings to the back of their finished art work (I decided if they actually keep their artwork then they will always have the background information on Jasper johns. We did print making with the alphabet stamps in cool colors then we painted around the letters with warm colors. I love them! My K-1st graders completed a slip with the photo of the cover of the book printed on it and the statement “___ is for ___”. I had them put their first initial and their first name in the blanks. This week they are finishing by using green paper and cutting out small peas and giving them faces to glue on their piece. Here is a short power point on JJ: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/huskeyj72501-1347957-jasper-johns/

burning stuff once again darlings, it's real talk slash tough loving time. you know those times when you come out of studio - having forgotten to eat and sleep for days - utterly content and completely spent? this is not one of those times. (if it is, how did you make it past the title? and for crying out loud, pour yourself a big glass of red, bask in the glory of it, and enjoy the fruit of your labor!) oh, this is different. you just checked your facebook page for the 13th time today, hit refresh on your etsy stats/inbox/twitter, spent hours/days/weeks getting inspired by crying over breathtaking art on pinterest and even more time staring in despair at blank canvas. read on, my friend. having come out of a 2, ok, 4 week studio funk with one glorious full day of painting, i'm feeling good. in fact, i feel victorious enough to impart the bits of wisdom that really worked for me. 1.admit you have a problem in the midst of the funk, your creative spirit expresses itself in one way only: by making beautifully crafted excuses. be honest with yourself. do you really need more research or inspiration? more often than not i find i'm just procrastinating, overcome by fears. 2. give yourself a (guilt free) break don't be tempted to skip this one. sure you've spent a lot (too much) time not getting essential work done, but beating yourself up doesn't exactly count as relaxing. take some intentional time off (a half an hour, even a day if you need). and make it good! you'll be much more motivated to get to work in your newly found good mood. 3.take a hike go for a walk. breathe in the crisp air. get your blood pumping. open your eyes. listen. explore. 4. ease into the work with a bit of play don't start off trying to paint the next masterpiece. that buys you an express ticket to overwhelm town. instead, go non-committal. have some fun with it. i tear some lovely papers to bits. burn the edges. glue random odds and ends to a failed canvas. throw some paint. explore a new way of making marks. pretty geometry 5. meet self imposed deadlines now that you've been quite nice to yourself, it's time for some tough loving. create some artificial deadlines. push yourself to the limit. find that you're made of steel in addition to the ooey-gooey arty stuff. surgery 6. turn your computer off and get to work eliminate distractions. also, literally, turns your computer off and get to work. just do it. 7. celebrate the little victories you know what to do. for me, it's the sweet sweet vices: whiskey & a nice cigar on the patio. or working on a fun sewing project: giving an old sweater edgy & feminine new life. cheers! you did it! tell me your tales of painting victory and beating studio funk! beautiful decay
