ABOUT THE ARTWORK My expressionist works of female iconography symbolize the feminine artistic essence of life and explore the spontaneity and drama of women in the world. I seek to bring a visual intensity and superb psychological drama and I try to reveal a timeless romantic perspective that passionately captures the excitement and visceral mystique. My works seek to encapsulate with passion and creativity a sensual and unique artistic vision with poignancy when radiating a poetic artistic point of view. My almost always haunting work in the use of light interacting with vibrant tonal combinations, juxtaposed with a superb outlook while seductively revealing the fascination of feminine mystique. I try to value the essence of the woman with her eternal visual symbolism that incorporates a timeless message while offering a powerful and sensitive narrative. I constantly seek to transmit the invisible within the visible of the female persona and take advantage of the essence of the emotional and physical experience of women with a deep sensitivity. The main characteristic of abstract art is that it has no recognizable subject. Some Abstract Artists had theories on the emotions that were caused by certain colors and shapes. They planned out their seemingly random paintings to the last detail. Other Abstract Artists painted with emotion and randomness hoping to capture their emotion and subconscious thoughts on the canvas. http://www.ducksters.com/history/art/abstract_art.php Wassily Kandinsky First Abstract painting made in 1910 Mark Rothko Jackson Pollock COLOR SCHEMES- A color scheme is used to describe the overall selection of colors in an artwork. This was a super fun project my Grades 4- 6 mixed elective class did at the end of this school year. They LOVED this project- some even made 2 or 3. I pretty much followed the excellent instructions posted HERE on the "We Heart Art" blog. She found the idea on the Fine Lines blog. I was worried we would have to use that chunky yarn (of which I had none) but regular yarn worked well. I collect empty cereal boxes from my students all year long and stockpile them for projects such as these. Students drew some type of abstract pattern on the card. I encouraged them to use shapes as opposed to open lines as we would be colouring these in. Of course some did non-abstract images and some used some open lines and they all worked out regardless :) Once the lines were drawn, students passed over the lines using regular white glue. Then they put pieces of yarn on top. We let these dry overnight. It's important to use heavy duty aluminium foil for this next step. It's just sturdier and thicker. Students cut a piece off the roll that was about an inch larger than their cardboard. Then they covered the back of the tin foil liberally with a glue stick. They need to use ALOT and do it carefully in one direction so the foil doesn't bunch up and rip. Other blogs used spray glue for this step but I didn't have any- the glue stick worked pretty well. Then put the foil over-top and, starting from the center, gently rub over the design using a small square of felt. It really works for buffing the foil over the yarn. Take your time with this step- the more you carefully rub around the yarn, the better the final artwork will work. Some students tended to rush this step. Once it's all glued down, I show students how to neatly wrap the foil onto the back- a technique I used during my book-making phase ;) Then the fun part: colouring the whole image with coloured Sharpies! Don't colour the raised yarn part. Here are Grades 4 - 6 results: This students did 2: one using cool colours and one using warm colours

Another project in my big Art History unit with my students is finally all displayed and ready to be shared! The two above were chosen for Youth Art Month at the Portage County Library! I found this project via pinterest (which is the worst kind of pinterest post). JUST an image. However, this image was actually pretty useful for understanding the project. Day 1: Picasso intro! Short and sweet powerpoint with a YouTube video of Picasso in action. I did stop it a minute early because he paints a naked lady (and I wasn't ready to tackle that). They really seemed to enjoy this short clip, makes the artist a lot more real to them. If only we had video of Van Gogh! After the video we played "Roll a Picasso" here is a version on Teachers Pay Teachers but I made my own to add a view more parts to it. My students absolutely loved this. They did it for 30 minutes without getting bored! I told them there was no mistakes, they didn't need to erase, and they would take them with them when they left. If they got sick of drawing they could switch to coloring them. I really wish I would of taken some pictures. There was really great ones! Day 2: I show them a little poster that I put together reminding them of some things about Picasso and showing some of his other works. Then I demo drawing the different features on the paper scraps using oil pastels and finishing with a black crayon. I saw such a higher level of confidence of this project and I think it was because of the Roll a Picasso. They had come in knowing what their strengths were with what features, and I didn't limit them to the ones on the sheet either. If there was a way they wanted to draw a feature or knew how, they did it. Day 3: Showed the poster once again just to remind them of Picasso (seeing as we only see each other once every six school days)! And started with a short demo of creating the head shape and coloring and assembling it. Started with drawing the head, arranging the pieces, traced them, took them off and colored the sections of the face with oil pastels. If it didn't naturally break into sections they did it where they thought best. Last step was glue sticking them on and tracing the added paper and lines in black crayon. I am so excited to share these with you, I just LOVE how these turned out! McDill Elementary... Kennedy Elementary... Jefferson Elementary...
