There's just something incredibly sexy about a vintage wooden speed boat... Chrome so polished it literally sparkles in the sun, the mahogany so finely sanded smooth and finished with that 5th coat of varnish that you can't keep your hands from touching it... Soft rumble from in the engine as you untie the lines from the dock... (1939 Classic Chris Craft) Don't you agree? Think Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn and Monte Carlo... maybe a little champagne and cheese picnic on board? Or maybe George Clooney would invite us out for a spin on Lake Como? Totally dreamy! Maybe one day when we have too much money? Not in my lifetime, but it doesn't cost a dime to dream! ah... maybe just a model for inspiration? Our new Riva! The Runabout! This vintage magazine ad hangs on my "dream" board in my office, just as a reminder that all things are possible! Scored at the Alameda Flea Market last fall.

According to Hopkins, “[Arthur’s] queen, Guinevere, is more elusive, less written about [than Arthur and his knights], and yet has been for centuries a central character playing a critical role in the rise and fall of the Round Table” (6). He goes on by characterizing her as “a key figure in the life of Camelot, this remarkable woman is seen variably as scholar, seductress, warrior, and dignified gentle beauty by the countless artists and writers who have depicted her. Who, then, was Guinevere?” (10) The purpose of this essay is to answer this question by looking at different texts and novels referring to the Queen.

As a youngster, William Andrew Loomis loved to draw pictures, but it was a visit to the nearby studio of Howard Chandler Christy that made him decide to seek for himself an artist’s career. Loomis was born in Syracuse, New York, and grew up in Zanesville, Ohio. At 19, he went to New York to attend the Art Students League, where he studied under George Bridgman and Frank Vincent DuMond. In 1915, he got a job in Chicago with the art organization of the Charles Daniel Frey; he also attended classes at the Chicago Art Institute. This was interrupted in 1917 when he enlisted in the Army and served 20 months, half of them in France. After the war, Loomis returned to Chicago to work at the Charles Everett Johnson advertising art studio, then for Bertch and Cooper. He finally opened his own studio as a free-lance artist. Equally at home in either editorial or advertising illustration, Loomis had a long career in both and also painted many twenty-four-sheet poster advertisements. This broad experience especially qualified him as a teacher at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Countless other art students who could not study with him personally benefited from his several art books, including Fun With a Pencil, Drawing for All It’s Worth, and Creative Illustration, published by The Viking Press. In 1999 Looms was inducted into the Society of Illustrators’ Hall of Fame.
