Are you looking for a visual story to use with your students for cutting their nails? If so, this social narrative is a great visual support to help guide them through the process of having their nails cut. This social narrative is a great read for students who may need some support and help to understand why they need to have their nails cut, and how this might make them feel. This visual story will hopefully encourage them and help them to understand the process. Many students with autism are visual learners and like to learn through seeing something in action. Comes in col option only - no b/w availability, however you can print in grayscale. Pages included are; ♦ My fingernails grow everyday. ♦ When my fingernails get too long, I need to have them cut. ♦ If my fingernails are too long, they might snap or scratch me or someone else. ♦ My family will help me cut my nails. ♦ My teacher will help me cut my nails. ♦ I should sit really still when I’m having my nails cut. ♦ Sometimes, I might get scared of the nail clippers. *Google Slides and Print Option* *Rubric Added!* About this Product This product came as a result of my students’ love of the biography series “Who Was…?” If you have not looked into this series, I recommend that you do! They are a fun, easy read that offers an engaging way for students to learn about historical figures and important people. Although this product is based on this series, this product could be used for any biography book or project. This is a nice way to integrate Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.🛑 Are you a member of the TLL Membership? These materials are already included. If you are not a member, click here to learn more. The TLL Membership gives you an all-access pass to hundreds of ELA resources for teachers in Grades 3-5. How I Used this Product In my 3rd Grade classroom, I used multiple copies of the same book or books and paired students in partnerships. In my school, we have a 30 minute Reading Intervention Block. I began this project with students who were not pulled out or working with me in small groups during this time. This was a nice way for students to work independently or in partnerships. It also created an extension for what they could already do as readers. Plus, they had so much fun! I let them work on this project in their partnerships. This held several benefits. Many students who were not pulled out or working in small groups tend to be higher level students OR students who have untapped potential. Allowing them to work on a project like this can extend their learning, as well as find new ways to enjoy reading. While other students had special groups or went to see other teachers, it was nice for these students to have their own project too. The Poster Page is a template that you could use for students to turn in with the essay or you could use this as a planning page and then have students create a larger poster on their own. I assigned it as homework and was pleasantly surprised at what my students turned in. I saw a wonderful increase in engagement by students who had shown little motivation or enthusiasm for reading. You can see the photos in the preview or in the product itself. Please know I updated the pages after the photos were taken with more detail and provided the poster template. Everyone can improve their drawing skills with Echo Drawing! Drawing is a vital skill in today’s world. Learning to draw helps us become more effective visual communicators at home, at school, and at work. Drawing well does not require having natural talent or artistic ability.… anyone can learn to draw! Drawing is all about looking carefully at things and seeing the relationships between lines and shapes, and gradations of light and dark. We call this "learning to see like an artist". "Echo Drawing" is a name I came up with to describe the “Duplication Exercise" first presented by Mona Brooks in her classic books “Drawing with Children” and “Drawing with Older Children and Teens”. These exercises help to develop observation skills and the ability to translate what we see onto paper. With the help of Echo Drawing, anyone can learn to "see like an artist". Through copying a series of designs from simple to complex, students will begin to see visual details and relationships they previously hadn’t noticed. In the process, they will learn to more carefully observe the world all around them. Included in this 12-page pdf: 1 page explaining why drawing is important and how copying can help us learn. 1 page filled with tips for completing these exercises plus strategies for seeing and drawing. 8 pages of hand-drawn Echo Drawing exercises: 15 exercises per page (2 pages each of levels 1, 2, 3, & 4, with each level increasing in difficulty). 120 unique exercises in all! 1 page of blank Echo Drawing boxes for students to create their own designs to exchange with friends. 1 page of blank Echo Drawing boxes for teachers to create designs for their students, at whatever level their students need. My Echo Drawing exercises are arranged vertically, for easy use by both right and left-handed students. With the box for drawing in placed below the box to be copied, students can easily see the design they’re copying no matter which hand they draw with. These pages may be photocopied for students to draw directly on them. Afterward, students might enjoy coloring them with colored pencils or fine tip markers. You could extend their learning by having them choose a specific color scheme like analogous or complementary colors to color with. Another option would be to laminate the pages or place them in a sheet protector for use with wet or dry erase markers, to be used over and over. (Note: The more detailed designs are best drawn with a sharp pencil or mechanical pencil.) Like anything worth learning, the skills of careful observation and eye-hand coordination improve with practice. With Echo Drawing, students will be motivated to practice these skills and they’ll be asking for more! In addition to the eight practice pages included, you’ll also find a page of blank boxes for teachers to use to create more exercises for their students at whatever level they want. There’s also a page of blank boxes just for students to create their own designs to exchange with their friends! Echo Drawing makes a great stand-alone drawing lesson or drawing warm-up activity. It's also a fun project for students to pull out when they finish other work or just need a “brain break". Plus, it makes a handy emergency sub plan since there's no prep involved - just print and go! No matter how you use it, "Intro to Echo Drawing" is sure to keep students engaged for the entire class period and beyond! TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID... ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ "Excellent warm up before art, for bell work focus or for fast finishers. My students loved these ( would sometimes cut them apart and just give them part of one page) and really challenged themselves. Excellent resource!! Many thanks." - Susan K. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ "The students were very engaged with this activity. I was pleasantly surprised to see the pride and perseverance of my students with this activity. It was a great way to discuss how artist use lines and curves to represent things and also practice observation skills." - Karen R. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ "This is a very in depth resource... I love how it starts out easy, then gradually becomes more difficult. The most difficult pages are very challenging for my strongest artists. There is really something for every level. I have used this in class myself, and also as sub plans when I knew I would be gone for a couple days." - Jen J. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ "This was an amazing find last spring! I piloted it with my 2nd graders and they loved it and kept begging for more! This year I use it in my art room as a warm up activity when they arrive in my room. All grades, 1-5, enjoy this activity!" - Judy G. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ "My students LOVE these worksheets! I teach elementary art and I give these to students if they finish their project early. They are always excited to try the next "level" echo worksheet. Definitely worth the purchase! This circle of control activity teaches students the difference between what is inside their control and what is outside of their control.
If you're looking for a way to help your students to begin seeing the character strengths in their peers then Character Strength Shout Outs are for you! Print and keep a pile of these Shout Out cards on hand for students to recognise and record positive things about their classmates. Teacher’s can also use them as a behaviour management tool to recognise good behaviour. You can include Character Strength Shout Outs in your daily schedule. Once the students have written a few Shout Outs for others they will begin to continually look for positive character strengths to write about their peers. They may not even realise they are doing it. Students begin to write Shout Outs very easily without too much thinking time. The benefits of including Shout Outs in your classroom are endless but here are just a few that I have noticed in my classroom. * Students begin to actively look at the positive qualities and actions of each of their peers. They never know when they will be asked to write a Character Strength Shout Out about a specific student. * Students begin to display more positive behaviours and actions when the Shout Outs are done regularly. They want everyone to see that they are a good person who is worthy of a Shout Out. * Students feel great knowing that their character strengths have been recognised by others. * Receiving positive feedback about their character results in the students feeling more confident to be themselves. Display Shout Outs in your classroom for all to see. Or have students collect their Shout Outs in a book or folder so they can be constantly reminded of the positive things people have recognised about them. Each file contains: - Black and White Shout Out cards in two different sizes (two per page / four per page). - Colour Shout Out cards in two different sizes (two per page / four per page). - Noticeboard display posters of the 6 different virtues. - Instructions, explanation and suggestions for use. I hope your students love Character Strength Shout Outs as much as mine do! Enjoy! Mrs Warner's Wonderful World.
The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin is a story about a native-american girl that deals with major strife and cruelty. She is able to overcome her situation and lives happily ever after. This story is a Cinderella story in many ways, so two of the activities in this packet also focus on comparing and contrasting her to Cinderella. One activity asks the student to compare and contrast their stories and outcomes. The second activity asks the students to identify how they both employ a growth mindset to be able to overcome their difficult situations and reach their goal, while still keeping their spirits high and their wits about them! :) Creative Writing Newspaper prompts include: 1. What would the ending of this story have been like if the Rough-face girl would have given up, when reaching her goal seemed impossible? 2. Write from the perspective of the RFG's sisters. What do they think of her being able to marry the Invisible being? 3. Write from the perspective of the RFG. How does she feel now that she is free? What does she plan to do in the future? 4. The Rough-Face girl was called many mean things by her sisters and the villagers. Look at the insult, cross it out and replace the word with a positive character trait that describes the Rough-face girl. Words can cause scars too, but they can also heal. Help heal the Rough-face girl's scars with your kind words. Then, use text evidence to describe why these character traits describe her.
