The Vermont Foundations Retreat went off without a hitch. We gathered at Good Commons in Plymouth, VT last week. It was a group of new tapestry weavers and they all took to it quickly. Many had woven some before, some had not woven at all. We all had a great time!

Tapestry weaving is one of the oldest practices of woven textile and it is a favourite craft among both experts and novice weavers today. Tapestry can be woven with simple looms and simple tools, yet we can create intricate DIY crafts for home décor like DIY wall hangings, handmade bracelets, hand woven table runners and so on. When I started Tapestry weaving, I used to look at other people’s artwork and thought that their method was very confusing and difficult to follow. I did not know where to start and what are few easy techniques that I could pick up faster as a beginner. As I got involved more into it, I discovered few Tapestry weaving techniques that a beginner can learn in 5 minutes. Here are 5 easy tapestry weaving patterns and techniques every beginner needs to know: 1. Plain weave (also known as Tabby weave): Plain weave is a commonly used basic form of weaving. Each weft yarn simply goes over and under each warp thread which is called the under-over pattern. Most novice weavers start by learning the plain weave before going to any complex patterns. This pattern is made by creating a checkerboard like pattern therefore making your weave very tight. Watch the video on how to Tabby weave to understand. 2. RYA Knots: RYA knots can be added at the bottom of your weave before you start weaving the whole frame. Rya knots create a very good-looking tasseled fringes at the bottom of your weave or can also be used throughout the weave, if you want to add a carpet effect. To create RYA knots, you need to take a bunch of weft yarn of desired length, create a loop around the first 2 warp threads and pull the ends in between the 2 warp threads. See the image below. Rya knots often look great when you use thicker yarns. Watch this Video on how to create RYA Knots Another variation of RYA loop or knots is called continuous RYA knots which most weavers use to add a nice texture to their Tapestry DIY wall hanging. A continuous RYA knot is a continuous weft pattern where you can create Rya loops from one side to the other side of your weave. To create a continuous RYA knot, you need a bunch of long weft yarn of your desired length which depends on how many rows you want to create. With this technique, you have to create a loop around two warp threads at a time. The only difference between a RYA knot and a continuous RYA knot is that the RYA knots are a bunch of yarns that are cut at a shorter length to create tasseled fringes, whereas the continuous RYA knots are a bunch of long yarns that can be woven continuously on many rows. This may seem confusing but not to worry. Watch this video on how to create continuous Rya knot and it will become clear. 3.Soumak: (for this too please add a drawing so it is easy to understand) A Soumak knot is an old, well-known technique among weavers. It is a great way to add a bumpy texture to your weave and it is mostly done on two rows in opposite directions to create a fishtail effect. A soumak row almost looks like an embroidered chain stitch. Most weavers love weaving a Ssoumak on their Tapestry DIY wall hanging as it is a great for dividing a weave into two different sections. You can add different effects and textures depending on the thickness of yarn or fiber you use. A thick bulky yarn or fiber is mostly used for decorating DIY crafts for home décor such as DIY wall hangings whereas a thin and strong yarn is mostly used for carpet and rug weaving. To weave a soumak, you have to wrap your weft around over a certain number of  warp threads (usually 4) before drawing them back under the last two warp threads and the process continues repeatedly. For the next row, the soumak weave is usually done in the opposite direction to create a fishtail effect. Watch this video on how to create a Soumak knot However, there’s a technique to make your Ssoumak weave faster. Instead of taking one row at a time and wrapping your weft on each warp threads, you can do two rows of Ssoumak at the same time where you can just create a loop at the start of your weft and drawing back the ends of your yarn or fiber in between the loop and creating a knot. The process continues repeatedly till end of your weft. Watch the video below to see how to create a Soumak knot using a special technique. 4. Sinna knot: (for this too please add a drawing so it is easy to understand) Sinna knot is not a widely known technique, but it is simple continuous knot that has a draping effect which looks great on a Tapestry DIY wall hanging. To create a Sinna knot, you need to start by tying a knot on your first warp thread, create a drape with your yarn and wrap the yarn around the third warp thread where you can create a loop to create a knot and continue the same process throughout the weft. Different effects can be created depending on the type of yarn you use. I recommend you use a thicker yarn so that the texture can be seen. If you use a twisted ply yarn, you will get a different effect. Watch the videos below to see how to create a Sinna knot. 5. Twill weave: Twill weave is a weave pattern that is done by passing the weft yarn over and under two or four warp threads with a “step” between rows to create a diagonal pattern. It is not a basic technique like a plain weave where you can simply go over and under each warp thread. Twill weave is a great technique to add to your Tapestry weaving. You can create nice textures like diamond or chevron that looks great when you weave a tea mug coaster, a bookmark or a DIY wall hanging. The appearance of the diagonal pattern lines when you twill weave can be different depending on the yarn count, the yarn weight or thickness, and the interlacing pattern. I'm preparing for an exhibit soon and have lots of small tapestries that I'm getting ready to hang. I thought I'd share some of the process here. There's a good collection of articles about hanging methods for tapestry included at the American Tapestry Alliance website at this link. The method I was using a few years ago was the one I described at the ATA site and it's just a bit different than what I'm showing here. But... there you go... always looking for a different way... if not better! So here are my steps: For the mounting board I've used 1/2" foam core board. It works fine for small pieces; the largest one in this group is 41" long x 4" wide. I measured and cut the mounting board using a fresh blade in the utility knife. A cutting mat is quite helpful for this process as is a metal yard stick. Next, I stretched a layer of cotton flannel (prewashed/dried) over the board using 3/8" staples. I clipped the ends and trimmed excess cloth away. The mounting fabric in this instance is a natural color of cotton twill canvas. It was also washed, dried and this fabric was steam pressed (no need to press the flannel since it smooths out when stretching and stapling it.) Excess fabric was clipped out of the corners, then the edges folded over and stapled at the back. This step is a bit tricky--you want to pull the corners as tightly and smoothly as possible. Staple and then you're ready to stitch on the tapestry. The tapestry is laid onto the mounting board and pinned in place temporarily with t-pins. The mounting boards are about 1/4" to 1/2" larger than the tapestry so there's a small margin showing around the edges of the weavings. Before mounting, the ends of the warps are dealt with... for small pieces that aren't four-selvedge woven (which leaves no loose warps to deal with), I usually use a half-Damascus edge that Peter Collingwood describes in his book, The Techniques of Rug Weaving. It's shown on pages 484-486. The process is done with the face of the tapestry down and it makes the warp ends lay against the back/body of the tapestry. Then I whip-stitch the warp ends down, four to six grouped together. And wefts that are near the edges are also tucked to the back with a whip stitch. Using a curved needle, the tapestry is stitched to the mounting fabric, moving around the edges. A color of sewing thread that will blend with the edge colors as well as possible is what was used, although I changed color of stitching thread if the value contrast of the weft at the edges was great. On the pieces with the warp showing at the edge, the stitching color was changed to the warp color (usually natural color). The curved needle will slip into the mounting fabric, travel up about 1/4" and then come out between the first and second warp. Pull the needle out, bury the sewing thread between wefts, then put the needle across to the mounting fabric again where you'll take another stitch under the fabric to the next point of attachment to the tapestry. This is a curved needle... although looks straight here. The back of the mounting board was covered with a piece of illustration board (mat board will work also) that was glued down. To glue it in place, the illustration board was quickly painted with slightly diluted craft glue, brushing it over the entire board and immediately laying the board on the back of the mounting board/tapestry. You need to be prepared to weight the whole thing down immediately--have wax paper torn to sightly larger size than the board (this is a barrier to keep any bits of glue from your weight) and put the wax paper on top of the whole thing. Weigh it down with something heavy (I use books). Leave it all alone overnight and when you uncover it the next day, all should be fine. For hanging, there are several solutions... you can use an adhesive hanging system, sawtooth hangers, or velcro. I was able to locate enough push pin sawtooth hangers to use for the tapestry diary pieces at the local hardware. This is an easy method to use and should stay in place just fine. The mounting board may also be put into a shadowbox-like frame. That's what I'm going to do with several of the smallest tapestries--frames will have to be built to size by a local craftsman in this case since I haven't been able to find shadowbox frames as small as I need. And... here are the framed pieces... Jeff just delivered the frames a short while ago. They're exactly what I wanted for these pieces.

I think any practice that gets you in the habit of creating is a good one. Only you can answer the question if doing a daily tapestry diary is the thing for you, but it is one way to get yourself going to your loom every day of the year. (Or make your own rules! Caption: Amara looked at the sun and the lay of the land Here Louise Martin talks about her Woven Tapestry courses on Eccentric weaving and Coptic techniques (with some stunning examples, click image to expand) Over the past 20 years I have produced work that is a response to the countries I have lived and travelled in. At first I incorporated superstitions, traditions and folklore, however, latterly I have become interested in capturing the essence of the land and my feelings towards it. As I walk in Mongolia or Turkey or Iceland, I clear my mind, open my senses, and allow the surroundings shape the result. When beginning a weaving I choose my palette, but I do not interpret from an image or cartoon, preferring to work from my internal feelings, trusting in my experience and technical expertise. As a result my work has become more meditative and joyful in production, and the surface livelier, due to the exposed warps and eccentric wefts. (Caption: Near the land of dinosaurs) Caption: Eccentric weaving Amara looked at the sun and the lay of the land and near the land of dinosaurs were both inspired by my travels in Mongolia and are both constructed with wefts woven at different angles to the warps - eccentrically. Another image, eccentric weaving, was woven during a two month residency in Turkey last year and clearly shows the movement of the weft threads. This is one of many eccentric methods which will be covered during the short course. In Coptic bird and Coptic flower I have used Coptic imagery and techniques, including eccentric weaving. These were woven for a British Tapestry Group exhibition titled Tapestry Mischief, where images from old tapestries were interpreted in a contemporary way. Conventional tapestry is weft faced, but in many of my new works the warp is exposed. I have been lucky enough to see many Coptic tapestries over the years in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Cluny Museum, Paris, the V&A, London and the Islamic and Coptic Museums in Cairo. The tapestries are often exquisitely woven, with a refined palette. For the course I aim to bring my collection of Coptic publications and a couple of small Coptic pieces I am lucky enough to own.
