By Alexis Tanner Lane At the end of the summer, our family went to Temple Square to walk around the grounds and to see the construction on the Salt Lake Temple. When we got the construction sight, we could see the exposed foundation which had been uncovered in preparation for structural and seismic upgrades. My mother-in-law reminded us of a story about the foundation of the temple when it was first being built by the early saints. When the Salt Lake temple was first being built, the cornerstones placed were made out of firestone in 1853. Only 4 years later, word had traveled to Salt Lake that the United States Army was coming to Utah and could be potentially hostile. The saints buried the foundation to hide it from the army. When the army left and the threat was over, the foundation was uncovered to resume building. Brigham Young found that the firestone had been damaged and would not be sufficient to support the temple. He then instructed that a 16 foot granite foundation be constructed. I’m sure it was incredibly frustrating to cover the foundation and pause the work of the temple. Then to uncover the foundation to find it damaged. But if that hadn’t happened, the granite may not have been placed and the foundation may not have held the weight of the temple. Sometimes in our lives, we experience a Salt Lake Temple foundation moment. We can feel like it’s a setback, when it actually makes us stronger. There’s been a few times in my life when we’ve experienced something like this. One that stands out was when my husband went through a two year training program for a job. We had both felt that he needed to do this program and felt confident that this was going to be the career that God wanted him to do. However, he didn’t get the job. We were heartbroken and didn’t know what to do next. He then changed career paths, we moved across the country, went to MBA school, and got different jobs. Looking back, we’re grateful for this new path and it helped us know for sure that the other path was wrong for him and our family. When we build a solid foundation, one that’s anchored in Christ, we can stand strong no matter what comes our way. We are reminded of this in Helaman 5:12 where it says, “...remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation...which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” We’ve all heard multiple times President Nelson’s quote from his talk Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives that says, “But in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.” Having the Holy Ghost as a part of our life is an important part of our foundation. As we strive to build our own strong foundations, we can be like the Salt Lake Temple and stand through the years through the trials that come our way. We had a great time tonight learning about building on a SURE foundation (Helaman 5:12) and acting out the three little pigs story ..(we have some fantastic actors in our primary) We also worked on building some structures made of straws..... with a lot of trial and error we had some great success. Check out the photos to see what our children got up to. Some of the children took some straw kits home, to share what they learnt for an up coming FHE. We always start our activity day with a small FHE style lesson. Tonight we read the scripture in Helaman 5: 12. We discussed some of the things that help us build a strong foundation - Our testimonies of Jesus Christ, prayer, scriptures study, good friends etc... then we talked a little about the things that might try to knock us about. We then acted out the story of the little pigs, using the story to highlight how important it is to work and build a strong foundation so that the huffing and puffing (big bad wolf) of the world cannot not shake us. The kids had a fabulous time acting out thier roles. We found a great printable of the story, and gave each child a role (they were all given the picture of their character) - 3 little pigs, the 3 houses and the big bad wolf. I was the narrater and just made the story us as we went along. The "house" children did a great job of sheilding their little pigs, and then dramatising either their fall or their steadfastness. The printable we used were similer to these http://primitivepursuits.blogspot.co.nz/2011/03/three-little-pigs-handmade-buttons.html Our main activity for the night was to have the children construct structures in a team and indivually using only straws cut into several lengths and a few types of connecters. We used play-dough, blu-tac and pipe-cleaners as connecters. The had different challenges to complete..... the tallest structure, the widest and a pyramid. We had a lot of trial and error, but all met the challenges in the end, learning how important it was to have a strong foundation to start. http://sycamorestirrings.blogspot.co.nz/2008/07/straw-shapes-activity-tutorial.html This is the blog I found the idea for the pipecleaner connectors.

I’ve decided to focus this post on a topic that is extremely difficult for our 3rd-grade babies to understand… FRACTIONS! Besides elapsed time, year after year I find my students having a difficult time mastering fractions. It’s also a topic that we need to make they understand because it is the foundation for future math concepts. In other words, if our kiddos leave us with a weak fraction foundation, they’ll be doomed forever… they’ll be forced to spend the rest of their lives without being able to share pizzas or brownies with friends You know I’m just kidding, LOL… BUT the truth is that without knowledge of fractions, students will NOT be able to do algebra or percents… So here are a few tips you can use to make fractions fun! Tip #1: When teaching students about fractions it is important that we try to stay away from simply presenting them with a set of rules to follow. Try to stay away from teaching them “tricks” such as “if the denominator gets bigger, the pieces get smaller”. I know how hard this can be at times, trust me I’m guilty of it as well. Especially when pressured […]
