Yesterday was a sad day in more ways than one. My heart goes out to everyone affected by yesterday's tragedy. I am thankful I have my kiddos and their creative little minds to get my mind off of things! We finished up our spring image writing yesterday. We began the lesson by reading a spring book (of course!). Then the kids each painted sheets of paper in the colors they would need. It takes awhile, but the end products are well worth the time spent!! Each started by making a page in all blue (for the sky) and all green (grass, trees, & flowers), then I let them decided which colors to do from there. They were so cute, making sure everyone had the colors they needed! Many of them were helping their friends when they finished. Teamwork! When the paint had dried, we talked about all the fun things we can do in the spring. They each chose their favorite and made their spring image showing that. We wrote a spring acrostic poem to go with our beautiful pictures. (I am also using these poems for our library poetry contest!) Here's a few samples! "Super warm days Perfect weather Rainy drops fall It's nice out Nice, pretty flowers Gorgeous flowers grow" "Some sunny times Pretty plants coming Rainy days begin It's time to plant New animals come Gorgeous things are here" "Spring is here, caw Pretty plants Rain coming, caw Ice melting Nice roses Grow flowers" I have some great writers! I love how their pictures came out. Image writing is one of my favorite things to do because they each come out so different! I put the spring paper I used in my TpT store as a freebie! It includes the acrostic poem and a page for creative writing if you choose to do that instead. :) Click here to get it!!!! Enjoy this beautiful weather!

Hi friends. :) I have a fun little spring adjective craft to share with you today! It's the perfect craft for a rainy day! Your kiddos will each secretly decorate their own umbrella and write clues to describe it. When everyone is finished, hang them on the board and the kids read their clues. (I hang about 10 at a time so it's not too overwhelming.) The rest of the class has to guess which umbrella belongs to each of their classmates! It's so fun and engaging - the kids forget they're even practicing adjectives! ;) There is also a recording sheet included if you wish to display them on a bulletin board or around your room and have your kids guess on their own instead! Check them out here!! Don't forget to tag me on Instagram if you make them!! @asunnydayinfirstgrade

Digraphs can be tricky after you've spent so much time working on individual letter sounds! Shady the Shark makes the sh sound easy to remember and fun to learn. Meet Shady! Shady the Shark. Shady the Shark loves shells. And his friend sheep. He basically loves everything with sh. :) From posters and centers to games and printable practice pages, this resource has everything you need to teach the sh sound. The Shady the Shark book is full of words with sh. It's fun to read the book as a class and highlight all the sh words! The game makes a fun center or partner activity. You can even play it supersized on your smart board! After we've played as a class, I usually send a game home with everyone so they can practice and play with their families as well. The Shady craft is a fun way to review the sh sound. Each kiddo will create their own shark and write sh words in its mouth. It makes a fun display too! Hop over and check Shady out! Happy reading!

I mentioned these kites a few weeks ago in a Five for Friday post. We finished them and they look AMAZING! My friend Jenn shared this idea and I just have to share with you! All you need is a kite pattern, tissue paper, and string. Easy peasy! If you don't have a kite and bow pattern, I have one for you! {Click here} to get the stencil! Just copy the kites on card stock. Cut squares of tissue paper. We talked about all the patterns we could make on our kites. Then go for it! All you do is lay the tissue paper on and use a paintbrush to dab it with a little water. Let it dry {it doesn't take too long!} The tissue paper falls right off and you have a beautiful kite! The kids LOVED it! I had my kids write a fact family on the bows. My friend who shared them had her class write adjectives. Last year I did a similar project. The kids chose a number and wrote it on their kite. On the bows, they wrote all kinds of facts that equaled the number on the kite. I'm sure you could think of something that fits with what you are working on too! Here are the completed projects! Enjoy the rest of the week!

If this card looks familiar, then you've possibly looked at the Sale-a-Bration brochure as much as I have! This is the Sunny Days Designer Series Paper - available for FREE for one more month only. I really liked one of the cards on page 5, so this is my take on it. I didn't have all the ingredients required, so I made a few substitutes. I used the Cloud Punch instead of dies, and made my sun using punches too. To make the lighter shade of yellow I sponged Basic White cardstock with Crushed Curry ink. The sentiment is from the Everyday Details stamp set. I think it works very well here!
