For Jr. Church Sunday I planned on teaching about the wise man and the foolish man. Sunday morning I awoke to a fresh layer of snow covering everything. Of couse, although I had my lesson planned out, I had not gotten my rock or sand for my illustration. So in my Sunday shoes I went out and trudged around the church playground to get sand and then went looking to find a big rock. I looked everywhere and could not find one rock that was bigger than a pebble! Finally as I went back in the house I saw one sitting under the tree only few steps from the front door of the parsonage. I was thrilled to find a rock but aggravated I hadn't seen it before. I used simple paper cups for houses and told the kids the story as I poured water on the houses. Of course the house built on the solid foundation stood while the house without the foundation fell. We then talked about how God is the strong foundation that we needed to build our lives (houses) upon. I took a plate and wrote God on it and then took pretzels and frosting and started building a pretzel house. As I laid each piece of the house in place, we talked about how reading our Bibles, obeying, trusting, praying, attending church, ect. all help us to build our strong lives centered on God. I then let each of the kids build their own pretzel houses. It was so much fun to watch their serious little faces as they concentrated so hard on building their houses. I heard several comments later from parents that their kids came home and retold the story and told how they need to build their lives on God. Amen! So nice to know that the kids are listening!
Another day, another way to make fun of Millennials. The term “cheugy” has cropped up in internet culture as a term to describe anyone who is unironically out-of-date or cringey. Think: MLM girlboss, Disney adults, and men who post pictures of themselves holding fish. Also, chevron. Always chevr

I have been swamped with one thing or another so it's been a while since I've posted. I went to a Daily 5 conference a few Saturdays ago...AMAZING! I've been redoing my literacy block ever since. I hope to start implementing the program this week. I'll report back and let you know how it goes. We have a array of cultures in my classroom, so when of my mothers told me Diwali - The Festival of Lights was beginning and that she would love to come in and share, I was excited. I hopped on the internet to see what I could find out and quickly put together a PowerPoint with real photographs, so I could give the children an idea of what takes place during this five day celebration. One ate traditional Indian cookies and my grade partner found a great video on YouTube of a traditional dance. It's a budget video (girl in her living room), but it's so easy to follow...honestly the kids loved it. I projected the video on my Elmo and we danced along. The mom that helped said she's never seen her son dance before that day. Check it out. We had 3 rangoli stations set up and just rotated the children through. A rangoli is a colorful design made on the floor near the entrance to a home to welcome guests. It is made with materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand or flower petals. First, we had a page with a rangoli pattern that the kids colored with markers (always a special occasion when I let them use markers). Grab your class the two freebies below. Grab this freebie Grab this freebie. Second, I drew a rangoli pattern outside the front door and a large pattern outside my side slider the afternoon before. Rangoli patterns are placed outside homes to bring good luck and well wishes. I used white chalk and the pattern from the pages above. The kids used sidewalk chalk to color in the different sections. The last station was with salt and flour dough and lentils. I had made the dough the night before and placed it into small baggies. I colored the water with food coloring prior to mixing it. This helped achieve the really vibrant colors I was looking for. The children used the lentils to make a symmetrical pattern. I think they came out fabulous. This group of first graders love art, which makes me happy since I do too. I think they came out beautifully. Happy Diwali! I have also been using my fast finishers in my small groups lately. Parents find them easy to follow and the children always do better when they have a little guidance. I also use them when I need a little more reinforcement of a particular standard. Each page is interactive and based on a Common Core standard. Click to check out this package. Enjoy you week.

Mental Maths activities Use this activity as some end of term fun or pop it in your fast finisher’s basket. Students solve the maths problems to match each letter to a number. Students then crack the code with the letter/number combination. Dots and Boxes Game A fun partner game to get students thinking strategically. Instructions: The game requires two players who take turns adding a single horizontal or vertical line between two unjoined adjacent dots. A player who completes the fourth side of a 1×1 box wins that box and puts their initial inside before taking another turn. The game ends when no more lines can be drawn. The winner is the player with the most boxes. A great end of semester or fast finishers activity. Make 4 Game It’s game time, so switch on your master minds and think strategically. Use as an end of term activity, for quiet time or as a social group exercise. This is a two player game. Students choose a colour and try to build a row of four checkers (coloured dots) while keeping your opponent from doing the same. Rows of four can be created vertical, horizontal or diagonal. The first player to connect four of their same colour, wins! Comic Strip Panels Use this resource as a creative writing tool for students to create their own comic stories with illustrations. Use in creative writing, literacy rotations or as an end of term activity. I Spy Game A fun I Spy worksheet to use at the end of term or for fast finishers. Students find and colour the number of objects in the table. Mystery Pixel Pictures A fun pixel art activity that is great for number and colour recognition as well as a simple end of term activity in the early years. Students colour by number to reveal the mystery picture. Jumble Words, a word building activity Using the letters provided students build words and list them in the tables. The aim is to make as many words as possible using only the letters provide. Teachers could also set time-based challenges or points based challenges where points are given for word length. Eg. 4 letter word = 2 point 5 letter word = 3 points

This lesson was created to teach character analysis through the short story "Examination Day" by Henry Slesar. This lesson should be used after reading the story so that the students do not have to read the story to complete the activities. This lesson is a Google Slides Nearpod lesson. If you are unfamiliar with these: Google Slides is free for everyone to use with a Google account. You do not have to use Google Classroom, but you can use them with Google Classroom as well. Nearpod is another free site where you can create interactive lessons for students. Once you have a Nearpod account you can import Google Slides into Nearpod to create a Nearpod lesson. This lesson includes one collaborate board, one drag and drop, two videos, one poll, one draw it, one open ended question, and two content slides. This would work best instructor led to facilitate collaboration, but could be modified to be student paced. For more resources for this short story and similar resources, visit my store.
This is a fantastic activity that can be used at the beginning of the school year as a way for you to get to know your students and for them to get to know one another. You will distribute a large blank puzzle piece to each of your students, and they will be asked to decorate the puzzle piece with words/pictures that represent them. When the students are finished decorating their puzzle pieces, you can ask them to describe their puzzle piece to their classmates in front of the class or in small groups. This is a great way to pre-assess your students' speaking/listening skills! Once the students have presented their works of art, have them put all of their puzzle pieces together on a wall/door of your classroom to create one large complete puzzle. Students will enjoy checking out their classmates' puzzle pieces for weeks to come in this unique display. This can also be an ideal time to talk about your classroom dynamic - everyone brings their unique personality, interests, and characteristics to create one beautiful, colorful complete picture! The class puzzle can serve as a reminder of that message over time. *Please note: This product comes with a single puzzle piece template. Students' puzzle pieces will connect together to form a large picture or a banner around the classroom, but there are no edge piece templates.
