So I haven't blogged in what seems like eternity (over a year!!). My new (school) year's resolution is to post at least once a month. That sounds doable, right? Correct? Answer me!... Aw, there's probably nobody reading this poor blog anymore. I'll have to work on that with a little freebie! :) I helped with a little math PD at my school this week and I shared some things I'm using for fact fluency for my little firsties. I've loved many of Kathy Gursky's ideas from www.theschoolbell.com for many years. Go check her out (click on number families for math stuff). I've used her fact booklet with my kids for years but this year I changed up the order a little so I thought I'd share it here. My kids keep their fact booklets in their take home folders so it goes home with them every night (no excuse for not practicing those facts!). When they pass a set of facts I mark a smiley face in the box so parents will know to move on to the next set. If you want details on how I assess math facts I can post it later but you'll have to wait a month as I'm fulfilling my quota of posts for this month :) Click each picture to download. **Disclaimer- That parent note that will be on the back of the booklet once it's folded is pretty specific to my classroom/school. You may want to type up your own and paste it on top. Sorry this isn't editable. Now for my gameplan for this year. At the end of last year I was thinking of how much my kids needed to practice and use polite manners. After a little searching for a manners unit I decided to just make my own. I finished it just in time since we start school next week, eek!!! I made an interactive student booklet that will go along with 2 weeks worth of character ed. lessons on manners. I just posted it in my teachers pay teachers shop and I'm going to mark it down 20% for the big back to school sale! I'd love for you to take a look at it (click image)! And if you like it follow my shop so you get notifications when I post new things or have sales. Thanks, you're awesome :) P.S. - this post is for you Amanda, my apologies for making you wait on the edge of your seat for over a year :)

I just finished my exponents unit in Algebra 1. It was interesting to me that some students that struggle seemed to really excel in this unit. This is really the first unit that didn’t depend heavily on their ability to solve equations - maybe that was part of it. To begin, I made this page to remind students of the information they learned in pre-algebra. This page reviewed the expanding process. Also, it reminded them of the zero exponent rule and the negative exponent rule. Then, we completed this domino activity by Math Dyal. The next day, we talked about the multiplication properties of exponents. We completed this foldable and practice sheet. I’ve started adding practice sheets to a lot of my lessons. I usually have my students do a few at a time with a partner. I hate letting them start their homework during class (only like half of them do!) and I can get more kids to practice this way. Then, we talked about the division properties of exponents. We completed this foldable. There were tons of examples inside the foldable, so I did not include a practice sheet for this lesson. I gave them a sheet with all of the exponent rules summarized on it. I had them try to fill it in themselves before I showed them the completed sheet. The last page we completed was from Scaffolded Math and Science. It is just a worksheet, but I copied it at 80% so that it would fit in their notebooks. Students found the area of familiar shapes and used the exponent rules. Looking back, I would have completed this before the division properties. She has a few other pages like this and I need them all!! During class, we also played speed mathing, did a coloring sheet, and did a couple worksheets. I think I want to include another activity or two in their notebooks for this unit next year.

Today is the last day to enter my Weekend Wishlist Giveaway for the fabulous Maggie Tote! The winner will be announced tomorrow morning! Let's link up to share what happened in our classrooms this week. Me first! :) In math, we are working on our place value unit. Students practiced writing expanded form by playing "Bull's Eye" using a target and paperclips. They wrote their scores in expanded form (ex. 100+30+2=132). Students are also learning to write numbers in word form. To make sure they are mastering the spelling of these words, we made flashcards and "Mastery Pockets." We'll save these to use for MANY activities this year! Here's how to make a "Mastery Pocket": Step 1: Take a 2-pocket folder. Cut a semi-circle shape ABOVE the inside pockets. Step 2: Cut down the fold along the white semi-circles (in pic above) so it creates two flaps. Fold flaps down. Step 3: Use velcro dots to secure flaps down so that they create pockets that can open and close. I got these Velcro mini-dots that worked PERFECTLY at Wal-Mart in the craft section. Step 4: Print labels that say "Practice" and "Mastered" to go on each pocket. You can download mine here! Voila! Now you have a cheap, easy solution to storing flashcards that students are using to master skills. And, students LOVE being able to move cards from the "practice" pocket to the "mastered" pocket! They also love to decorate them and make them their own. ;) In science, we're still learning about animals. This week we finished up learning about all of the animal classification groups. Students created flipbooks to help them remember the characteristics of the different animal groups. I love using different textures to represent the animals' body coverings! Mammals - fur fabric from a craft store to represent hair/fur Reptiles - onion sack to represent scales Amphibians - wax paper to represent smooth, moist skin Birds - craft feather to represent feathers Fish - onion sack to represent scales Insects - a piece from a hard plastic 3-ringed folder to represent an exoskeleton Inside they wrote examples of animals that would belong in each group and characteristics of that group. (Animal Groups Flipbook from Teacher's Clubhouse) I ended my week by taking one of my SWEET students to Frankie's Fun Park for putt-putt, bowling, and games! She won a date with me from the silent auction at our school's carnival. It was a fun time and a perfect ending to the week! She won over 2,000 tickets and insisted on buying me something with them - a Gamecock Hello Kitty! I'm pretty sure it's going to bring my Cocks good luck tomorrow...maybe I'll take it to the game -ha! Gotta love those sweet students! ;) What happened in your classroom this week?

ones, ten, hundreds Hello! My name is Sandi, and I am your friendly guest blogger from rubber boots and elf shoes. This is my first guest blog, and I am excited and nervous. It’s kind of like the first day of school! I asked my kidlets at school what I should blog about. They decided that it should be math and it should be a song. And that I should have to take pictures of them! Every day during our calendar time, we sing a song about place value. Since we are kindergarten, we tend to learn by moving our bodies. There are lots of good reasons for learning through moving - the kinesthetic learners, muscle memory. cross brain communication and activity, getting the blood moving through the body and the brain, and if the kids are moving to the actions of song, they are not poking each other. A former student teacher introduced me to this song a few years ago, and it’s part of our calendar routine. It’s said as a rap/chant; no real tune - just find the rhythm. Put your hands in the air And look down your nose We’re going to put the numbers in the place value rows. The 1s are on the right The 10s are next in line Move one more to the left for the 100s every time 1s, 10s, 100s Ones, tens, hundreds 1s, 10s, 100s ya! From this song, we have had discussions about thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions. Some of the mathemagicians really GET how it all works. And then one kidlet said that he could count to ten hundrend kajillion, so we went back to numbers that we could wrap our brains around! Click on the images to grab your copy of the place value song. A huge thank you to April for allowing me to visit and guest blog. It's been nice getting to know you.
