This easy to use no prep product has 40 different pieces that students can mix or match to create custom-designed animal lapbook reports. There are 20 with writing lines and 20 without lines. This project might be just the thing for review of writing skills and vocabulary pertinent to nonfiction reports. Rather than include animal faces and graphics for kids to copy, cut, and paste I decided to include a blank “picture piece” for kids to draw their own version of the animal they might choose for their reports. This way you won’t have your students doing “cookie cutter” animals. Kids can color and add details to the other pieces for originality. I added core standards for grades 2-4 on pages that could be posted in a classroom, ESL Insights, which is a guide to use this product with ELLs, and a new paper option for report writing. My students really enjoyed creating these lapbooks. They are really great organizers, too for further writing. Teachers who need portfolio writings can have their students use these lap books as springboards. I included a report template that could be used in addition to the lap book. This dodecahedron book report gives your students an engaging and hands-on way to share what they've learned from their reading. Hello Everyone, HAPPY Saturday! My name is Kathleen Wainwright from Not So Wimpy Resources, LLC. I am very excited to be a part of this collaborative blog! Today I want to share with you a quick activity that you can use immediately in your classroom! Let me first say that this week was loo....ong! I had a horrible, horrible, horrible stomach bug that sent me home early on Wednesday and kept me in bed all day Thursday. Having this activity prepared in advance for my Student Teacher was a LIFESAVER! It was the perfect filler activity and kept the students engaged during our literacy block for the remainder of the week. And, when I returned today, it made for an easy Friday. A Blooming Book Report is basically an alternative to your traditional book report. It is a way to get students to think about a selected text while also producing a fun published piece of work. Currently, my students and I are reading Pippi Longstocking. This is NOT the kind of book you can read without having students complete follow-up activities. Pippi is a spit-fire character full of excitement, wit, and entertainment. My students adore her! This was a great activity to get them to start thinking about her character (and her traits) and how her actions contribute to the sequence of events in the story(CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3). Here is how it works... 1. First my students read the designated chapter. 2. Then they complete the following outline: 3. This will be a pretty quick post tonight, but I promise to update more tomorrow. Between buying clip art today, playing around, and having a migraine I am still wide awake! However, I had to show you what I created at 2 a.m. in the morning. The new thing is having your own little mini person. I have seen them everywhere lately and they are adorable. However, I was afraid if I got someone to do it, they would hate me because I had so many details in mind, so I made my own little mini person with a few key Faith features :) You will get to know her well because I'm going to have to find a way to use her, so the best way is to pop her onto my blog :) This is my typical look - crazy, long, curly hair, glasses, my cross necklace from my Mom, iPad in hand, Coke, blue jeans, and some sort of cute shirt that hopefully makes me look a little skinnier. Oh, and we better not forget the Toms. I also usually have cross earrings, but yeah, adding those would have probably not looked right. Even my hubby said this is my typical look. Bless him for not saying she's a little skinnier than me. Crazy what you can accomplish on an iPad when you can't fall asleep until 4:30 a.m. Did I mention I did this with my finger? I couldn't find my stylus, so decided to give it a shot. In other news, I have a friend who is hosting her first ever giveaway! Do you remember my cute birthday cupcake? Well, if you do and you liked it (which you know you did), you have to go visit Erica's blog. She just got her 100th Follower a few days ago and couldn't wait to do her first giveaway. I have to say, I've been scared to death to do a giveaway because there is so much work involved, but the girl knew what she was doing. I'm telling you, you wouldn't even know it's her first time doing this. Anyway, in case you missed my April Book Reports since I know most of us have been on Spring Break here they are again. Hi everyone! This is Shelley Gray from Teaching in the Early Years and I am thrilled to be a new author on Blog Hoppin'. I am so inspired by many of the fantastic bloggers here and I can't wait to get started! So, on that note, I would love to tell you about quadramas! Quadramas are a fantastic classroom project, and if provided with appropriate scaffolding, young students are quite capable of creating them. I have personally used quadramas for many different subject areas, but they work particularly well as a reading response activity. Below is an example of what a quadrama looks like. It is made up of four quadrants, each one summarizing a specific aspect of the topic. What makes quadramas really exciting for students is that they can become three-dimensional by adding pop-ups or other objects. The picture below shows what a quadrama looks like from the top. Notice the four distinct quadrants. To make quadramas with your students, simply follow the directions below. Begin with four pieces of paper. Heavy paper such as manila tag is best, as it will stand better when finished. However, if you don't have heavy paper available to you, regular white copy paper will work. Next, the paper needs to be cut into squares. To make a square out of a rectangular piece of paper, the easiest way is to fold it over like this: and then cut off the excess like this: Then, when the paper is unfolded, you will have a square piece with one diagonal crease: Next, you will fold the paper the other way to create a second diagonal crease in the paper: The next step is to make a cut on one of the creases. Note that the cut is only made from one corner of the paper to the center. Next, put glue on the "triangle" that is to the left of the cut. and fold the paper like this: Once you press down the paper so that it sticks to the glue, you will have finished creating one of the quadrants of your quadrama! Now, do the same thing to the other three pieces of paper so that you end up with four identical quadrants. The quadrants can then be glued together to form the quadrama! Then, students can decorate the quadrants based on your goals for the project. ***TIP*** Decorating and coloring the quadrants is easier to do before the quadrama is assembled. If you decide to have students decorate before assembly, get them to do it before the gluing stage. Pop-ups and three-dimensional objects can be added after assembly. As a response to literature, you may have the students base one quadrant on characters, one on setting, one on plot, and one on climax. Alternatively, you could ask students to choose their four favorite parts of the story and represent them using pictures and words in each quadrant. Encourage students to use real materials, such as cardboard, sticks or clay to create a three-dimensional feel. The quadramas below were done as a culminating project for Social Studies, but you can see how each student used unique techniques to make the projects "their own." As I mentioned earlier, scaffolding may be required depending on the grade that you teach. I have done quadramas with grades three and four students, and most were able to complete the steps alone. However, a volunteer can come in handy for the paper-folding steps. For lower grades, you may want to consider having several helpers on hand, or complete some steps before beginning. All in all, this is a fun, engaging project, whether used as a response to reading activity, or as something totally different!
