When it comes to paint, I've tried tons of different products. In our recent kitchen makeover, I got to try out some products that were new to me, so today I thought I would share which ones ended up being my favorite. So, let's get started with the paint colors and the product breakdown. In yesterday's post, I talked about how I painted my kitchen cabinets a pretty white. Here's the info for my cabinet color: Since the insides of my cabinets looked like this when we moved in, I decided to get creative, and I painted the insides of each door with chalkboard paint (seen here). For the chalkboard doors, I used chalkboard paint, which has quickly become one of my faves. You just paint it on pretty much any surface and you instantly have a chalkboard! I used the same chalkboard paint on my chalkboard accent wall in the corner of the kitchen. I wanted to make a permanent menu on our chalkboard, so instead of regular chalk, I used a bistro chalk pen (Amazon Affiliate link). It writes just like a pen. The only thing is that it doesn't erase all the way, so whatever you write stays there. I used it to write the Monday through Friday, and then I use regular chalk for the rest of the board. Let's talk chairs. I decided to make my white thrift store chairs look like metal industrial chairs. I used Rust-Oleum titanium silver, one of my favorite silver spray paints. I love the finish the paint creates and it's super durable. I also used the titanium silver spray paint on this mirror. Tip: Use a small brush to paint black paint in the grooves of any ornate mirror and let dry. Then spray with the silver spray paint. After the spray paint is dry, go back in and add a little more black paint in a few areas. You'll be left with a really great dimensional finish. Now, let's talk wall paint and trim paint. I've painted my entire 1970's house full of trim. See all of the before and afters AND a really easy tutorial here. When I paint my trim, I usually use Behr Ultra Pure White in a semi gloss finish. Here's a picture of the look-through bar in my kitchen. You can see the white trim. I love the ultra-pure white because it has zero amounts of any other color. That way when you paint your walls, the color really pops against the pure white. See how gorgeous the wall color looks against the trim? I love it. That's a brand new paint job in our kitchen, too. It's my new favorite greige paint, a perfect blend of beige and gray. The kitchen used to be a warm beige, and after awhile it started to wear on me. Here is a picture of the original wallcolor right after I brushed some of the new paint color on. You can really see the difference when they're right next to each other. The new paint color I used is called Behr Mineral. I've tried so many different beiges and grays, and this is handsdown my fave. I had it mixed in Glidden (just because it's cheaper). Here's a pic of the exact specifications. You can take the below info to any paint store, and they should be able to mix it for you there. Here's the next awesome product that I use. When I first shared it in this post, the questions came pouring in. Basically, I have tile floors in my kitchen and all 3 bathrooms. The tile is in great condition, but the grout was disgusting. So, I did some research online and discovered that you could paint your grout. Not with just any old paint....you have to use grout paint. I used Polyblend Grout renew and a toothbrush as an applicator. For more details you can go here. This next product was a total gamechanger for me. I've been annoyed by the outdated tile on my bar area for nearly 3 years. It drove me nuts. It screamed 1980's every time I walked by it. So, I painted it. It's durable, beautiful, and looks like porcelain tile now. I love it. You can see all the details about how I painted my tile in this post. So, that's all for today! Thanks so much for stopping by! Non-boring neutral Sherwin Williams paint colors for an entire house. Colors for an open floor plan, bedrooms, bath, etc that keep the vibe cohesive.
Today's musical selection: If I ever get done priming and sanding all the pieces in my lifetime, I will need to paint them. Pretty much everything needs to be painted before the house is assembled. So to make any progress, I had to decide on an exterior color scheme, a project that resulted in almost as much endless waffling on my part as the original decision of what to build. I looked on the web for pictures of "Painted Ladies" because I wanted my house to have a Victorian look. Pinterest is a great source for this, just go there and type in Painted Ladies and you'll hit the jackpot. This was a good site also: http://www.paintedladies.com It also happened that we had a vacation planned, and we went to Cape May during this period. Cape May is one of my favorite place on earth, and yet I ams so obsessed with working on this Miniature House that I was borderline annoyed by the interruption the trip presented. While we were there I had lots of Victorian architecture to look at for inspiration, and I also found a little fireplace in an antique shop, so the trip was satisfying on many levels. I took this picture on Gurney Street, both for color schemes and because the design of the houses kind of reminded me of the Strawberry Patch: Victorian Houses in Cape May, New Jersey I took the picture of the Delsea House below because of the fancy wood trim. The Strawberry Patch kit came with some trims that I thought were kind of unrealistic, but as it turns out they are taken from actual Victorian style houses: The Delsea House, Cape May NJ Curlicue Trim from the Delsea Curlicue Trim from the Strawberry Patch Porch Balusters from the Delsea Porch Balusters from the Strawberry Patch But I digress, because I was talking about picking a color scheme. So all of this research was interesting but didn't get me anywhere in terms of making a decision. What I finally did, at the advice of my wonderful husband Bob, was to take a trip to the Home Depot to get paint brochures. They do the work! Here is the Behr brochure I picked up. It contained dozens of designer-approved color schemes all mapped out for me: The brochure is many pages long, so it didn't completely eliminate the angst and indecision, but at least I knew that whatever colors I finally picked would look good together. So after much consideration, I settled on the color scheme at the bottom right on the page above, because it is similar to a real house that I see and admire on the way to church every Sunday. I record the colors here for my future reference: Walls: Behr Pale Sagebrush - No. ECC-38-1 Shutters: Behr Sea Fern - No. ECC-38-3 Trim: Behr Ultra Pure White - this is different from the color scheme, but I preferred the pure white You can buy little sample pots of all these paints for $2.99 each at Home Depot, so you don't have to spend a fortune on full size cans. I bought two pots of the Sagebrush and one of each color for the shutters and trim, which should be enough. Behr paint sample pots have screw tops, which is so much nicer than dealing with traditional paint can lids. Naturally, as soon as I got the sample pots home I realized that I totally should have picked one of the other color schemes. But I am going to try not to be so crazy and stick with what I chose. So now I can start painting!

I am painting again! Our bedroom needed to be updated, and paint is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to change a room or should I say makes the biggest impact. It is not always easy. Do you paint? Do you want to? I have been painting for 30 years. We have owned and painted four houses we lived in (multiple times), three we flipped, two we renovated and helped others paint. I am always learning new tricks, and would like to share with you some tips I have learned along way. One of the hardest parts of painting is getting a straight edge to give it that professional look. When I started to paint I used painters tape all the time. It makes a nice straight edge, but it definitely has its disadvantages. It takes a lot longer to prepare to paint. It costs more than if you didn’t have to use it. The paint sometimes gets under the tape. Then you have to repaint where the paint leaked. If you don’t take the tape off while the paint is still wet, it is harder to remove. I learned how to paint free hand and I do a very good job at it, but I found a way that gives me a perfect edge every time and is really fast and easy. Look how nice the edges look! Every edge is perfect! Read More to find out how to get this edge… I use the edger shown below. I bought my edger several years ago, but while I was in the paint department I thought I would take a picture to show you it only costs $5 and if you clean the pad out well it will last for several jobs. They sell replacement pads also. (Buying tape for each room adds up $$.) Here is a short video of how to paint a perfect edge every time. (Only 3 min. long) Here are several tips you need to know in order to use this edger and get the perfect edge! Don’t get to much paint on the pad. This is the most important! Use a paint tray with the little bumps on it (like the one below). Roll a small amount of paint up onto the bumped area. Dab the paint edger into the paint gently. Keep the rollers clean. Keep a damp rag handy. If you get too much paint on the pad, get excess off by either spreading it on a wall area or if there is really too much, wash, dry, and start over. Don’t leave a thick edge from the back end or a ridge will show when you are done. If you get interrupted for any amount of time put the pad on the paint in the bumped area and then put the whole tray in a kitchen trash bag. I am letting you know all these tips because I learned the hard way and got frustrated several times. This is not hard to do once you know these tips. I have my teens edging for me sometimes. If they can do it, so can you! Be sure to watch the video to see how to use this edger and to see these tips in action. If you follow these tips you will have the perfect edge and this makes painting faster and more enjoyable. Does this make you want to try this edger? This is not a review for this product. This is just something I like to use and I am not getting anything for this.
