Math standards here in Texas have changed quite a bit this year. We no longer teach fractions of a set anymore - just wholes now. I wanted to share a few things we did during our fraction unit. The kiddos started off understanding equal and unequal parts with Pop-Tarts. Afterwards we moved on to fourths and halves. That is something else that changed with our TEKS this year. We only teach halves and fourths. I gave each kiddo a handful of different sticky notes. They had to fold them to create halves and fourths. After folding, they traced the fold with their pencil and then with a black marker. Next, they had to sort their fractions by halves and fourths. We used washi tape to create the t-charts. We also created fraction flowers using several different 2D shapes as our wholes. And Fraction Kites! Yesterday we wrapped up our fraction unit with these Flip Its! You can find the above activities here and here for free. I hope you are all having a wonderful week!

Happy Friday friends! I wanted to share what we have been working on in phonics for the past 3 weeks. Now that we have reviewed our vowels and have them down, it was time to start working on beginning blends. We started off meeting Chef Blend and her recipe book for making blends. Afterwards, the students became chefs by wearing chef hats,.... Hat clipart by Krista Wallden .....got mixing bowls, spoons, and worked in groups to make blends using letter cards. After they blended their consonants together, they had to find the matching picture for each new sound. Next, they created their own recipes for each set of blends. Throughout our 3 weeks we covered s blends, r blends, and l blends. My students added our new blends to their recipe books each week. I sent their recipe books home today for them to read all their recipes to their parents. We also made our very own Chef Blends and added words that begin with blends to the bowl. We also completed lots of interactive journal sorts and matching to continue practicing blends. You can find the activities above in my newest Phonics Friend pack , Cooking Up Blends, here. .....and in my S Blends pack here.
Fractions in the first grade classroom can be a CHALLENGE for sure, but I like to use a lot of hands on manipulatives and real life situations for students to see the parts and the whole of each fraction. While CCSS only requires first graders to identify 1/2 and 1/4 of shapes, I like to […]
One of the biggest transitions I had teaching was when I went from six weeks hands-on assessments to a grade book. GRADES for kindergarteners and first graders terrified me! A few weeks into the school year I found the perfect solution...weekly report cards!Weekly report cards...really?!?!? Doesn't sound very "simple" does it? Well, I promise that
We've been really working on our subtraction skills! Here's a *quick* and super fun activity to do with your kiddos. Subtraction Bowling! Supplies: Dixie Cups Tennis or bouncy ball Recording Sheet 1. Have your students set up 10 Dixie Cups against a wall {5 cups, then 4, then 3, then 2, and then 1}. 2. The first player rolls the ball toward the Dixi Cups. 3. The first player counts how many pins were knocked over and records that number on their recording sheet. 4. Using one of the strategies we've practiced {counting back, number line, draw a picture}, they find out how many pins were not knocked down {It's their partner's job to make sure they don't *cheat* and just count the pins not knocked over and actually subtract}. 5. The student can check their answer by counting how many pins were not knocked down. 6. Now it's player two's turn! Keep taking turns until each player has had 10 turns. Click the picture to download:

Along with orienting your new students to the classroom and classroom procedures, the first few days of school provide a great opportunity for some community building exercises. A few years ago we featured this fabulous board and thought it offered a great jumping off point for a collaborative project as well as classroom decoration for the first few weeks of school! "I Am Unique" Puzzle Piece Craftivity We love using the puzzle illustration to show students that each of them, with their different abilities, interests, and skills, have a special and important part to play in the classroom community - i.e. it takes all of the unique puzzle pieces, fit into their unique places, to create a whole picture. As a fun first day of school craftivity, provide each of your new students with a colorful card stock puzzle piece cutout, old magazines, and various graphic art materials, inviting them to use the materials to decorate their puzzle piece with pictures, words, and illustrations that describe who they are, what they like to do, etc. To extend the activity, have students select the three things they'd like to share about themselves with you and their new classmates, expounding a little bit on each one. For example, instead of simply saying, "I like to craft", have them tell you what they like to craft, etc. The best part is, each of the individual puzzle pieces can then be fitted together to create a colorful mural for the classroom! In This Class, You Are A SPECIAL Piece Of The Puzzle! Here's how we would tackle a puzzle bulletin board... Find a puzzle template online (with the appropriate number of pieces) and use the classroom projector system to enlarge and trace the pieces onto background paper. Use a pencil to number the back of each piece, then cut the pieces apart. Once students have decorated their piece, the puzzle should be relatively easy to order and assemble using the numbers on the back. Since your students will be doing most of the decorating, all you'll need is background paper to cover the board, a fun trimmer, and some bulletin board letters to complete the display!
