Hello Everyone, my name is Sue Higginson, and I am a calligrapher from the UK. I'm going to be talking you through the process of creating a beautiful illuminated letter from scratch using real gold. These letters are such fun to make, and the techniques of painting and gilding can…
Here you can choose between two complete sets of our illuminated alphabet colouring pages - embellished or simple. The embellished pages are quite intricate and will take a while to colour in, so are perfect for older children (and adults).
Recently in my attempts to get myself to do art post-graduation I have been working on an Illuminted Letters Alphabet. Originally I was just going to make one 'A' but then I got caught up in it, so now I'm moving on to the whole alphabet. Each letter is inspired by an obscure or unusual word. A was before I really had any idea of a theme. I guess in retrospect A is for Aviary. I then experimented with some color, scanning in old test strips of watercolor samples. Still not quite sure if I like that look or not yet. B is for Bric-a-Brac: Small, usually ornamental objects valued for their antiquity, rarity, originality, or sentimental associations C is for Cornucopia. Then I got bored with D and skipped to H, which is for Horology: the art or science of measuring time Currently in progress is E for Entomology
Our illuminated letter colouring pages have been designed for you to pick out individual letters, or you can use several together to make up a word that means something special to you. We've included two versions of the letter L below (a simple design, and a more detailed design too).
This is the second week we worked on illuminated lettering in my art classes. During the Middle Ages, illuminated art was used by the rich or educated in decorated books and texts. It was first called "illuminated" because gold was used to highlight it and so "lit up" the art. The letters were also highly decorated. Over time any highly decorated lettering with or without gilding was called illuminated. We talked about the history of illuminated lettering and looked at examples. We looked at two modern illuminators, Mary Engelbreit and Graeme Base.We did this project on watercolor paper, but it could be done with other media on other types of paper. I feel that watercolor paper is worth the extra cost when you are using watercolors. It is good for the kids to learn about different weights and types of paper. I made a couple of practice letters this week to try out techniques. The first one I drew I used black color to outline, and then water colored it in. (See J.-click pictures to enlarge) This worked well, but was still too difficult to manage for my aged classes. (4/5/6th). On my second practice version (See S.) I outlined with black permanent marker, and colored in with watercolor pencil. This gave a lot more control for painting. Note: Do not use washable markers if you will be painting over it, it will smear. I had never used watercolor pencils before last year, but find they work well for some projects. I do think it is good for kids to learn to use watercolors, but sometimes in a classroom situation it can be overwhelming to try for certain projects. There are also watercolor colors, which work well too. Basically you color the area in and then go over the pigment with a wet brush to "melt" the color into watercolor. Here are some of this week's letters. All of these happen to be A's. I think it is interesting to see the same letter done in a variety of ways. We will finish these next week and I will probably post some finished project pictures then.

I made a decision several months ago to give up the commission side of my art business. As my calendar had filled with teaching engagements and trips to far-flung places, it became more and more difficult to find time to squeeze in the labor-intensive custom artwork. But when my friend Mary approached me a few […]
A fine art, giclee print taken from my original gouache painting, with hand applied 23.5 gold leaf. The letter D, illuminated in 23.5 karat gold leaf with a print of my gouache and ink painting of daisies and a white tailed bumblebee. A lovely piece for anyone who's name begins with D. The gold catches the light beautifully. I'll always try to keep one in stock, but otherwise they're printed to order, so please allow a couple of days for the gold to be applied (it would be a horrible waste of gold, to have lots sitting in my stock cupboard unsold). It comes mounted and signed. The whole piece measures A4 in size, including the mount, ready to fit into a standard A4 frame. These are also available with either a pink or blue letter D at a lower price. There is also a D is for Daffodil oprtion. Please see other listings. Postage is free with the UK and £15 for overseas. All artworks should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. If possible they are best framed behind a UV protective glass.
My students thoroughly enjoyed making these illuminated letters, and their work turned out so beautifully!

Here is a picture of the cover and one of the pages of the Adolf Bernd book, entitled (or subtitled?) The Painted Letters of Adolf Bernd. He lived in Germany from 1909-1994. Peter Thornton was instrumental in getting the book produced. In the introduction Peter writes, "...to me it is Bernd's superlative use of colour that is the most impressive and satisfying aspect of his work. The more we look at the paintings of this modest and highly talented man, the more we can be rewarded by their sense of inventiveness. They not only have an ability to refresh the eyes, but the sheer joyousness of their invention and colours can truly uplift our spirit."
The Book of Kells contains portraits of all the Evangelists as well as of Christ. This portrait of John has a notably intricate border. As part of the general celebration of St Patrick’s Day at Trinity, the Book of Kells in its entirety is now viewable in the Library’s new Digital Collections online repository. The link is slow, slow, slow but the images are gorgeous, one of the great treasures of the early Middle Ages. The Book of Kells (Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais) (Dublin, Trinity College Library). is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. There is great uncertainty about its origins. It is thought that the Book of Kells was first worked on at the monastery on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland, and was continued, after Viking raids, at the monastery of Kells in Ireland. Kells Abbey was plundered and pillaged by Vikings many times in the 10th century, and how the book survived is a miracle. It was stolen in the 11th century, at which time its cover was torn off and it was thrown into a ditch. The cover, which most likely included gold and gems, has never been found, and the book suffered some water damage; but otherwise it is extraordinarily well-preserved. In 1541, at the height of the English Reformation, the book was taken by the Roman Catholic Church for safekeeping. It was returned to Ireland in the 17th century, and Archbishop James Ussher gave it to Trinity College, Dublin, where it resides today. The Book of Kells was written on vellum (calfskin), which was time-consuming to prepare properly but made for an excellent, smooth writing surface. 680 individual pages (340 folios) have survived, and of them only two lack any form of artistic ornamentation. In addition to incidental character illuminations, there are entire pages that are primarily decoration, including portrait pages, "carpet" pages and partially decorated pages with only a line or so of text. As many as ten different colors were used in the illuminations, some of them rare and expensive dyes that had to be imported from the continent. The workmanship is so fine that some of the details can only be clearly seen with a magnifying glass. The text of the Gospels is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure. http://tcld.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/book-of-kells-now-free-to-view-online/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Kells

Illuminated manuscripts were decorated with beautiful "illuminated" (gold and silver) initials, decorations and pictures. Our set of illuminated alphabet colouring pages follows that tradition, but we are providing two versions per letter - one "simple" and one more traditional - so that everyone can enjoy colouring them in.
