We have begun our unit on living systems in science (thank GOSH because Earth and Physical science have quite literally killed me this year...seriously, I feel like the most incompetent teacher when I teach science...but I digress...). Our main focus for the past week before Spring Break was the circulatory and respiratory systems. I thought I would share some of the things we have been doing, in case some of you are in the same unit yourselves. To get us started, we watched a few BrainPOP videos about circulation and blood. I found these in the HEALTH section, not the science section. The kids were very enthralled with these videos (they ALWAYS are really) There was quite a lot of information in them, which got us started on the right foot. The videos mentioned how the circulatory system was the delivery system of the body and that all systems were connected to this one. After some discussion, the students created this Circulation Data Disk from the Easy Make & Learn Projects: Human Body (Grades 2-4) (affiliate link) book. The idea of this circular disk was to show how all of the organs in the body played a very special part in relation to the circulatory system. I purposefully whited out the info on the disk so that the kids could do the research themselves. Using our health and science books, the students discovered the role of each organ in circulatory system. We then used the Easy Make & Learn Projects: Human Body (Grades 2-4) (affiliate link) book and created a model of the heart. The kids diagrammed the model to up the rigor a bit. They then placed these in their science journals. Another great find (that the kids had a blast playing) was the Circulation Game from Ellen McHenry's homeschooling website. This is a free download and I am so glad I found it! It took a while to set up and explain, but once they were going, the kids really were into the game. They learned quite a bit about how blood travels through the body and how it disposes of waste. (just a little note, I printed out 5 of these and had each table play. That way, there weren't as many people playing on one game board) Finally, the kids watched the School House Rock video, "Do the Circulation". (I have the actual DVD Schoolhouse Rock! (Special 30th Anniversary Edition), (affiliate link) but you can get it on YouTube if the school doesn't block it....like mine does) I gave them the words and, combining language arts with science, we looked for all of the facts and opinions (as well as figurative language) in the song. We discussed why the writers would put opinions and figurative language in a song intended to teach us about the Circulatory system. The students decided that it was because without the opinions and figurative language, the song would be B.O.R.I.N.G! We also began working on our Body Systems project on Google Drive. I made a template for each body system and the kids all began filling in the information about the circulatory system. This worked out perfect here because the kids had so much background knowledge at this point. They didn't really need to do as much research since we were learning so much as it was! (click here to get the project for your own class!) This is a screenshot of the slide before the kids actually did any work. I forgot to take pictures of them working! To explore the respiratory system (a bit further, as we really were talking about it all along with the circulatory system), we first diagrammed the organs involved. Then, the students did a little experiment to measure their vital lung capacity (how much air can be forcibly taken in and blown out) and the tidal lung capacity (how much is taken in and out during normal breathing). The kids has SO much fun with this one! They really were surprised at how much air they *couldn't* blow. I think they all thought they would pop the balloons in one breath when, in actuality, they hardly inflated them at all! You can find the exact experiment and printables here. So there you have it. Our basic introduction to the systems of the human body. Up next is the digestive system. This week Ethan started Heart of Dakota: Creation to Christ. We don’t start our actual school year until January so we are taking our time with the units. Sept. 15th-19th 2014 Unit 1 Focus: The Beginning of History and of Sin This week he has completed days 1, 2, and 3 of unit 1. Next week we ill complete day 4 and start unit 5. It’s been a busy, hectic, but very accomplished week with running 6 Heart of Dakota Guides. Today as mentioned, I’ll focus on what Ethan is using which is Creation to Christ. Because Ethan struggles with reading I am helping him a lot. What I am doing to help him get some independence is use My Student Logbook. I write everything in this book, including the units and days. All he has to do is look on the day we are on, find the subject/box (Reading About History or History Project) and complete the work, usually it’s copying a verse or reading the Bible. Most everything else we do together. I’m still trying to find our rhythm but it looks like the My Student Logbook will be part of it for a while. Heart of Dakota’s guide has each subject in a box, so when you hear me say we didn’t complete all the boxes, I’m not talking about a physical box! Here is what a day looks like. One of the boxes that I thought for sure we’d skip was the poetry. I thought to myself, if there’s a box that we need to let go than it will be the painting. Throughout the year with Creation to Christ your child reads poetry, copies a portion, and paints a picture using watercolors. I had a lot of fun with this when Caleb and Brent used CtC. Remembering the great memories with the boys a few years back, I wanted the same memories with Ethan so I said to myself, “Let’s get it done!” Look how well he did. I thought it came out really nice. This is his first time using watercolors. Because I’m using 6 Guides this year we might do the poetry painting every other week. This week we read from The Story of the Ancient World, Dinosaurs of Eden, Genesis: Finding Our Roots, A Child’s Geography, The Illustrated Bible and the Bible. Whew, talk about a lot of read aloud time. It was a lot of work for me but very enjoyable. I am loving my time with Ethan. Here he made a Generations flapbook. Please excuse the smudge or grease looking dot on my pictures. My old camera has a scratch on it. Reading from the Illustrated Bible. He actually prefers using the Bible but I wanted him to look at the pictures. Bible Quite time is a box (subject) we do together. His memory verse this week is Philippians 2:1 which he’s a little behind. He highlights verses in his Bible. Ethan also completed: Teaching Textbook 5~lessons 8-17 Writing & Rhetoric Book 1: Fable~started lesson 6 All About Spelling~completed lesson 7 and started 8 All About Reading: lesson 5 & 6 Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree: Week 4 English Through Literature 2: lessons 43-46 this also includes cursive copywork Even though Ethan complained at times he did enjoy his first week using Creation to Christ. I did too! It was crazy busy sometimes but I enjoyed (almost) every minute!

I've been thinking about the upcoming school year and my new (and hopefully better) approach to teaching writing. This past year, I had what I thought was a flawless system. We'd spend a week on a new grammar concept, then a week on a new writing prompt where we'd go through the whole writing process and put our new skills into practice. Then the next week, it'd be back to grammar lessons and activities. It was a structured way of planning, and the kids were definitely learning the "objectives" they needed to learn, but how much of their time in WRITING class was spent WRITING compositions? *cringe* Not nearly enough! Luckily, the amazing teachers on my team were often finding ways to incorporate writing into their classes (reader's response, science notebooking, etc.) BUT STILL! There's nothing as effective as writer's workshop, and I need to do a lot more of it. So, my goal this year is to give my writing classes a new writing prompt/new writing trait focus every Monday, spend every day going through the writing process, and still find time to weave in the spelling and grammar. How? A friend of mine, who is a very successful fourth grade writing teacher in our district, told me she only spends 10 minutes a day on grammar through old-school D.O.L. exercises, but she tailors her D.O.L. warm-ups to current objectives only and gives them a short quiz on Fridays to assess their learning. I thought this was brilliant! A little grammar homework never hurt anyone, either. With all these thoughts in mind, here's my plan so far... A Week in Mrs. McMurrough's Class (better have those pencils sharpened!): Monday : D.O.L., new spelling words, new prompt, plan compositions Tuesday: D.O.L., write first drafts Wednesday: D.O.L., peer-revise, writing conferences Thursday: D.O.L., peer-edit, writing conferences Friday: D.O.L. "quiz," spelling test, write/publish final drafts Am I insane, or does that schedule sound feasible for 70 minute class periods? Of course, I'll also be modeling and sharing bits and pieces from mentor texts along the way. It will interesting without a doubt, but I really do think it will help the kids become better writers in the long run. In a nutshell, my revamped writing class will be less of a "grammar fix-a-thon" and more of a comprehensive "writer's workshop." Yay? I hope so. The first writing trait I plan to focus on with my brand new group of kiddos will be IDEAS. You can have gorgeous handwriting, a "robust" vocabulary, and a consistent command of spelling and grammar, but what good is any story without original ideas? The best ideas also come from the heart, right? I first learned about "Heart Maps" when I came across this Pinterest pin, originally pinned by Jennifer Ferraro Matteodo: In January, I made my own version of a Heart Map template (below), and my students loved creating and referring to it! I enjoyed it, too. There was one class period where I almost got teary-eyed sharing my own Heart Map with them... putting so many meaningful people, memories, and personal values inside one paper heart turned out to be more sentimental than I was expecting. Oh yeah, I'm also a huge sap. Then, I allowed plenty of class time for them to illustrate their own Heart Map and paste it inside the front cover of their draftbook (writing notebook). The "key" gave them some nudges on what to include and helped them incorporate a variety of meaningful parts of life. It was something special and helpful that they referred to throughout the year anytime they experienced "writer's block." I think having your own Heart Map is especially handy when thinking of ideas for personal narratives. Here's my spin on the all-important Heart Map: It can be downloaded for free here: My TpT Store! Hello Everyone! Thanks for stopping by! I have to tell you, I am loving this whole blogging thing. I hope to learn how to upload some of my printables very soon. Check back again for things like that! There were two activities that ended up being our favorites today! The first one is math related. We have been working on "area" of shapes. The kids have really caught on to simple area, so I decided to challenge them a bit. I gave them a piece of one inch grid paper. They had to use the squares to create one of the animals we have been studying. After a practice sheet, they had to recreate it with markers on a new piece. When finished, they had to document the area of their animal. Fantastic job kids!!! By the look on their faces, I know they were enjoying every minute of it!! Take a look!! practicing area with animal shapes It's a moose, of course! Cute Coyote! Sweet Skunk!! Terrific Turtle! Our next favorite thing was learning about fireflies!!! Fascinating insects! After reading some of our favorite firefly books and poems, enjoying interaction with a firefly in a jar, we practiced the firefly lifecycle, wrote a list of things that also light up the night sky (sorry I don't have a pic of that) and then worked on a craft connection. The kids were given a paper jar to cut out...tricky cutting out the inside! :) The jars were laminated and the film was left in the middle. We then fingerprinted the wings of fireflies with glow in the dark neon paint. Add a silver sharpie body and voila!! So cute!! The kids had a ball!! We will hang these from the ceiling!! (Middle Schoolers are not too old to color.) I knew I could move on once they completed the Doodle Notes. An answer key is included. Why Doodle Notes? Research shows that when we sketch, doodle, or color and listen to someone, both sides of our brain are engaged. Most school subjects are only engaging our left side of the brain so by introducing a task that also stimulates the right side of the brain, students will be able to focus enough on their task while also taking in the content of what they are doing. When both sides of the brain are working, new connections are being made. These connections are then creating a stronger, more cohesive learning environment. Sketch or doodle notes also create a beautiful visual. This helps in two ways. First, students are immediately drawn to want to work on the task simply because of how pleasing it looks to the eye. With the beginning of our geometry units in 6th grade math, it has been all about angles and triangles this past week! Thanks to some creative (and cheap!) angle ideas I found on social media, I was able to incorporate some new things in my classroom this year as we start geometry! First off, this fun idea to reinforce a basic understanding of angles! With some leftover fun tape from Office Depot, a little card stock to write the angles, and about ten minutes, I made this fun entryway into the classroom. I can't take credit for the idea, but am happy to share it! It definitely caught the students attention and had them thinking about different angles! The second fun idea I found (again... can't take credit for this one) I was able to use with my math intervention groups this week. After we had learned about different angle relationships (vertical angles, supplementary angles, and complementary angles), I covered our front dry-erase table with table at various angles. I then went through and measure the minimum number of angles they would need to be able to find all of the missing angles without a protractor. This turned out to be a great problem solving challenge and really promoted teamwork and working together. I could also see this working out great as a math center during math workshop. UPDATE: I recently added a full set of Angle Relationships Task Cards to my TpT store! It currently includes over 70 challenging angle problems and 4 different levels of difficulty! With the start of geometry, I was also able to try out one of my newest units of Math Task Cards: Triangles, Quadrilaterals, and Transformations. I now have two sets of task cards up in my store. A set of Math Task Cards, which are a little more basic problems. Then, for students that finish these quickly, I have them try the Math Enrichment Task Cards. Having these more challenging task cards makes it easy to push my higher students and keep them challenged! Here are a couple shots of the prep and final product of some of these task cards. I always print out six cards for each topic, which is what I need for my math workshop front table group. If I have time I corner round the corners and laminate to help them last! Geometry has also allowed me to finally get to what is probably my favorite Challenge of the Week problem! I recently updated this freebie with five more questions that could be used, so be sure to re-download it if you have already grabbed this one from my store in the past!
