Hi Friends! The 100th Day is right around the corner and I wanted to share with you some of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE 100th day activities that I have accumulated over the years! First of all, an ABSOLUTE MUST is to get your entire hallway involved in the fun! We created this "grand entranceway" a couple years ago and the students went CrAzY for it! ( We just used a bed sheet, tempera paint, and some masking tape to hold it up!) My second MUST is to decorate your classroom door! Yes, of course there are going to be quadruple the number of bathroom and water fountain breaks as usual so that the kids can duck under the streamers...but so what...you knew this day wasn't going to be a normal day anyhow! Ok, this MUST will keep you laughing for days...YOU MUST DOWNLOAD AN AGING APP on your IPad or phone and age all your students darling faces...and yourself of course! (I used Aging Booth) I turn it into a Power Point presentation for the kids to watch. SO...MUCH...FUN! I know there are lots of "new" 100th day books out there, but I still adore these two oldies! (A serving of chocolate chip cookies is not required, but HIGHLY APPRECIATED when reading The Wolf's Chicken Stew, and I'll Teach My Dog 100 Words is the perfect intro for a "We Can Write 100 Words" class activity. This MUST is our favorite 100th day song. You can a copy of it FREE by clicking here. WARNING...This MUST is another GIGGLE producer!!! You need to make copies of a map of your school, ( I use the first floor of my building since that is where my classroom is located), and then have the students predict...using your classroom door as a starting point, where you will end up if 100 students lie down end to end. Then let the measuring begin!!! (Some years we have included other classes to make it equal 100, and some years we just keep getting up and repositioning ourselves.) Another MUST is to have your students use the number 100 and their imaginations to make a 100 Picture Masterpiece! My favorite math MUST for the day is Race For A Flat (sometimes called Race or Roll for 100) In this game the students roll two dice and gather that many base ten blocks. They can make trades for tens whenever possible. The goal is to continue to gather and trade blocks until someone reaches 100. It's Sunday. Mid-winter break is over. Everyone should get mid-winter break because it is fantastic. It's five glorious days tucked between two weekends during the shortest-yet-longest month of the year, and also the most depressing month because by February you are just ready for spring to show it's blossoming face. Here's how I spent my days away from school. I only went to school once. For only a few hours. I should probably get there really early tomorrow to be sure I'm prepared to jump back in. First, I helped some friends paint their living room in their new house. Painting is so rewarding and refreshing because when it's finished it feels so fresh and clean! Next, I spent some quality time with my blog, specifically the Websites & Resources tab up above. I'm pretty excited about it. I was busy locating and curating a few resources I love. I expect this will be an ongoing resource for myself...and hopefully others! Teaching is all about sharing! Check it out...and let me know what I should be adding! Then I spent some time enjoying the Puget Sound. I went kayaking. Visited Point No Point, the first known lighthouse on the Puget Sound. Watched cargo ships anchor themselves in the water and wait for union workers to come to an agreement and start unloading ships again. Visited Chief Seattle's gravesite. Stood in the Puget Sound water and just generally admired my surroundings. Love the Pacific Northwest and all it's beauty! Then, I've had a few unfinished TpT projects taking up space on my computer desktop. I usually have them ready for my class use, but then drag my feet on the part where I have to prep them for the store. I was feeling motivated at the beginning of the week to wrap a few of them up. I prepped a few for my classroom and got them all ready for the RTL store. A few of them have been sitting around for awhile, so it was nice to get them off my plate! Here's a quick share of what I worked on and what's new to the store. I get super excited when I see my own activity pinned by someone. My most-pinned and one of my best selling activities is my 100s Grid Art for fractions and decimals. I l-o-v-e using my SmartBoard center that follows this activity up, so I finally got it all together and up on the RTL store. So now I have the 100s Grid Art, and the SmartBoard center up separately, but if you want BOTH, I bundled them, too. (this picture is from before I got my SMARTBoard and was using a Mimio file, but the TpT product is a SMARTBoard Notebook file) Another one of my favorites is the Retirement Booklet that I have in my store because I love being able to have it on file and ready to pull out at the end of the year. However, I'm not one for doing the same thing year after year, so I like to have activities on more of a "round", or "spiral", if you will. So I made another retirement booklet so that I have a few ready at any given moment. This one is more of a Mad-Libs style (I call them Fill-Ins). I made it pretty versatile because class personalities can vary from year to year. I have a page for fill-ins prior to seeing the retirement letter that you can do first and then put your silly answers into the retirement letter page. Or you could just do the retirement letter page without the first fill-in page so that answers make a little more sense or are a little more personalized. Or if you have younger kids or students who may need a little extra help picking some words, I have a page with three word selections for each blank to help them out. It could be done as a class for one letter or individually from each student. It's up to you. The cover is also in color or black and white, so you can choose. This one has been on my mind for awhile so I'm excited that it is together and ready! THEN (I'm telling you, I was motivated to wrap these up!), I finished a poster set for three sets of commonly misused words to give my kiddos a classroom resource to use. My goal was that during writing conferring time, I could just point out that a word was used incorrectly and then guide them to these posters to see if they can figure out which word to use for themselves. I am laminating them today and they will go on my bulletin board tomorrow morning! Yay! Again, color and black and white options, in case you're more of a print-it-on-colored-paper person like I am! I posted a few other things, too... I was productive! I finished my week of relaxing with a little professional development with on a Saturday. I got to go hear Georgia Heard, author of Awakening the Heart and Finding the Heart of Non-Fiction (and many more), speak about using non-fiction and poetry to help students become better writers. I took lots of notes, and I left with some good stuff to work on and bring to my "family of writers". Ready to see those kiddos again tomorrow and start doing some fresh new learning! Follow RTL On

First Week Must Dos 4 comments Back to School, Freebies, Popular Posts There are so many things that teachers must do the first week of school. Do these sound familiar? All of these things (and probably a few others that I missed) must be taught, discussed, and practiced (repeatedly) if you want your classroom to run smoothly all year long. See the last item on that list? That's my favorite 'must do.' In my eyes, all the items in the list are equal in ranking when it comes to importance, but I truly enjoy teaching my kiddos good work habits from the start. Good work habits, in my classroom, include: We all want our students to be neat, to pay attention to detail, to follow directions, to take pride in their work, and to pace themselves when working. When I say "pace themselves" I'm talking about not rushing. I want my students to focus on the task at hand and thoughtfully complete that task. Rushing rarely yields stellar results. Our students don't always come to us doing all of these things. And, that's OK, they are little kids. They aren't born knowing the skills that make up good work habits. They learn these skills. My favorite way to teach these important habits is in context. What I mean by that is, I use back to school activities, projects, and assignments that I have planned for the first week to introduce and reinforce these skills. I usually start teaching these skills on day one. I like to start with neatness. Of course, being neat also entails paying attention to detail, and not rushing through a task. My favorite project to use on day one is a class book. We talk about what a class book is and who will be reading it. When kids know that other kids will be reading their work, they are typically motivated to do their best. They want their peers to love what they have contributed to the special book. This makes the class book perfect for encouraging students to take pride in their work. You can cover so many work habits with one simple project! Once we talk about the class book and its audience, I show them an example of neat work (see below). I point out that I colored in the lines (yes, accidents happen, and that's OK). I also point out that I used colors that make sense (I don't have purple hair, so I didn't color myself with purple hair). A page like this is perfect for focusing on those coloring skills. The next day, we make another class book. One that includes more writing, so that we can focus on neatness as it pertains to handwriting. I review the skills we talked about the day before, and I remind the students of who will be reading this book. Then, I show an example and point out the use of neat handwriting (Do you like my typical second grader response? Hehe). When I say neat handwriting, I simply mean that the words can be easily read. Over the course of the week, we end up making several class books, which gives the students several opportunities to practice using neat handwriting and coloring, paying attention to detail, pacing themselves (not rushing), and taking pride in their work. It's easy to get student buy-in when focusing on these skills in this capacity because they want to make a really awesome page for that special class book! Class books are one of my go to projects that help reinforce notions of neatness, attention to detail, pacing, and taking pride in one's work, but I love to do craftivity projects too! Craft projects are perfect for teaching all these same work habits, but are also great for reinforcing the important skill of following directions! You're probably thinking, crafts during the first week? Really? Yes! I'm not talking about hard core, super involved projects here. It is the first week of school, so keep it simple! You can still teach your students to be neat, to pay attention to detail, to follow directions, and to take pride in their work with simple activities. Take this project for example. It's a writing project disguised as a craft. More specifically, it's a first week journal. Each day, the students write about that day. With this kind of project, you can model neat coloring and handwriting, attention to detail, and pacing (remember, when I say pacing, I mean not rushing through the work). Then, they can practice those skills. Whether you have students cut and assemble the book before they begin writing, or after they finish writing on all of the pages, you can use that portion of the project as a means to reinforce following directions and paying attention to detail. If you walk into my classroom the first week, you'll likely see my second graders completing a craft like this. Well, actually, this exact craft. Hehe. I like to get student work up on the board ASAP, and this is a quick and easy project for that. It's simple enough and provides great practice with attention to detail and following directions. I typically pass out all the templates that the students need. Then, I model how to cut out each piece. Once I cut a piece, the students cut that same piece. As I model, I talk about what I'm doing. I point out that when cutting rounded or circular shaped pieces, I really need to slow down and carefully follow my cutting line. I even teach them where to set their cut pieces so they don't misplace them. This reinforces the notion of neatness beyond writing and coloring. Then, I repeat this process with the gluing phase of the project. I display the craft on the board so they can see it and attend to detail and follow directions more easily. Breaking it down step by step makes it easy for them to follow directions. It also puts them at ease because they can easily see what is expected, and ultimately they end up feeling successful at the end of the project. While there are so many things we must do that first week of school, remember to take time to make sure that good work habits are on your list of must dos.
