I found this amazing technique on Pinterest and you can check it out here. I had a really hard time getting it right consistently so I simplified it and it works now every time! Here's how I do it: First, you take your two ends and hold them together. The pink yarn is what I'm joining to the green yarn... then, wrap the pink yarn around your thumb ONCE. (In the video she has you wrap your thumb twice) then wrap the pink yarn in front of the ends ... fold the ends over the yarn you just wrapped in front hold the ends snug against the tail of the green yarn. Slip your thumb out of the loop. hold the ends snugly with the green tail then start to pull the pink yarn, (so this is obviously a bad picture because I don't have a good grip on the green end...) make sure the pink loop stays down around the folded over ends pull tight! snip the ends and it's all done!

So, for church our ladies group (The Relief Society) wants to crochet hats for the homeless and I was asked to help teach it.. so here are the handouts. They are designed to be printed on paper that is 5.5" x 7" but you can do them any size you want. = ) The first 4 pages of directions come from here: http://whimsicalpublishing.ca/2013/03/02/how-to-crochet-free-simple-illustrated-instructions/ The rest come from me. = ) (I just realized a huge omission on my part.... for most of these hats, they are made out of the Peaches and Cream type yarn and used a hook probably 4 mm or 4.5 mm. the only (?) exception is the ladies hat with brim and I think the yarn was a bit finer than the peaches and cream and I used a smaller hook... probably 3 mm or 3.5 mm... It was so long ago that I made these ...!)
If you've ever wondered how to crochet a nice cone, like you'd want for a gnome hat, then here ya' go.. = ) Here is a the finished hat using these instructions... Make a chain as long as you need for the size you want. Join it into a circle using a slip stitch. In the next chain, single crochet. Continue single crocheting around. This is worked in the round so keep going until you have 2 rows of single crochet completed. Place a pin 5 stitches from the end of row 2. Single crochet around again until you reach the pin. Move the pin back 5 stitches and insert it. In the next two stitches, do two single crochet's together - this is a stitch reduce. You are making this row one stitch shorter than the last one. Single crochet around until you reach the pin again. Move the pin back 5 stitches, crochet 2 together in the next 2 stitches, reducing the row count by 1 again... crochet around until you reach the pin.... and on and on... Here it is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way done. You can see the gradual sloping in.. When you get to this point, the pin comes out. Put 3 single crochet's between the stitch reduce two (or so) times, then put 2 single crochet's between the stitch reduce, then one for a few times until the hole is closed up. You just have to kinda eye-ball it at this point. = ) The top is closed! Chain 3. Cut the yarn (leave a tail several inches long), pull the tail through. Then insert hook inside cone and pull the yarn inside. Pull the tail tight until the point is as you want it. All done!

For our Blue and Gold banquet / Pack Meeting we did Secret Agent... Here's what we did: Here are the patterns for the invitations... I used a brown bag color ink pad to color the envelope for the key.. (the key goes in the envelope) The text on the left gets folded into thirds and put in the pocket with the key envelope. The invitation part gets stapled inside the folder but on top of the pocket... Here is a picture of the completed invitation. That night: our Secret Agent Director sent the boys and their younger siblings up the stairs to the stage through the "lazer beam" maze. once on the stage, the Agents were fingerprinted and given a badge (from the dollar store) Then they went down the stairs on the other side of the stage through more "lazer beams" and then into the gym. Here are the badges. I either took pictures or had parents e-mail me pictures of their kids that would be attending the banquet. For those whose picture I took, they wore sunglasses. The others I had to photoshop them on. The kids were all fingerprinted then the sheet was folded in half then put it in an ID badge holder. Here is my daughter with her's. For the table decorations, we took pictures of all the scouts with the same hat and sunglasses on in profile. I cut them out of some 1/4" press board. (you could also use foam board or card stock) We labeled all the profiles with digital numbers and one of the pre-banquet activities was trying to figure out which profile belonged to which scout. When the night was over the scoutookts got to take their profile home along with the table decorations around their profile. This is the desert table. The eating tables all had black tablecloths. Desert was cupcakes topped with a chocolate doughnut hole (bomb) with a 4" piece of pull-and-peel licorice (the fuse) stuck in the top.
