Late winter / early spring are the perfect time to cut back ornamental grasses. You can get a head start on landscaping chores, and create new plants!
September - the harbinger of fall. The chores start to add up while the days get shorter and cooler. It is time to start cleaning out landscapes and cutting back fading summer plants. It is also the time to give your peonies some attention. Labor Day is the signal that it is time to cut back peonies for the year. Did you know the peony is one of the few perennials that actually prefer to be transplanted and divided in the fall? Not to be confused with daylilies and hostas that perform better when transplanted in the spring, transplanting peonies just after Labor Day is usually the ideal time to complete this task. There are several reasons for dividing and transplanting peonies. Peonies prefer a good amount of sun, but can tolerate some shade. If the peony’s location is heavily shaded by a tree or large shrub, the flowering can be reduced. Transplanting the peony to a spot with more sunlight will increase flowering. Another reason to transplant and divide peonies is overcrowding. Sometimes older, more established peonies can become overcrowded and as a result will produce fewer flowers. Dividing the peony will refresh and invigorate the plant. After the stems have been cut to near ground level, begin digging around the plant. It is best to dig straight down, about 6 inches from the plant using a sharp spade or shovel. If you are transplanting the entire plant, make a few passes around it, digging deeper with each pass (to about 14 inches) and at more of an angle. If you are dividing the plant, determine how much of the plant is to be removed and dig through the plant, segmenting the portion to be divided. Now you are ready to begin prying the plant upward. It is normal hearthe snapping of the roots at this point. After all roots have been cut or snapped off, the plant can be lifted out of the hole with a shovel and carefully turned over so that it rests on its stems Carefully loosen and remove as much soil as possible by either rinsing with water or using a sharp stick or screwdriver. If you have an assistant like Tobias, the paws come in handy for this step! Once soil has been removed, the plant can be cut and divided into sections with at least 5 “eyes” each. The eyes are the small pink nodes along the roots that are the stem buds for the next season’s growth. Each section is now ready to be planted. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root mass to be planted. (This is another task that Tobias is quite helpful with!) At the end of this step, the eyes should be planted at a depth of just 1-2 inches below soil level. If they are planted too deep they will fail to bloom for a few years. Peonies prefer well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Adding peat moss or compost to the soil that is removed during this step is a good idea, but is not required. Place the root mass in the hole and begin to backfill the soil. Once the eyes are covered with soil, add a 1-2 inch layer of mulch to protect the plant from extreme freezing and thawing through the winter. In the spring the mulch can be removed after the threat of a hard freeze has passed. Even if the peony is planted at the correct depth, poor flowering should be expected for the first year. After two seasons the plant should be back to full flowering potential. Love peonies, but disappointed in the short bloom period? Tobias suggests planting several different varieties of peonies. Selecting early and late season peonies can lengthen the bloom period to about 6 weeks! Now that your peonies have been put to bed for the season, it is time to start thinking about bulb planting. I have rooted many of my own plants for years, trying different techniques from soil layering to using rooting hormones. By far, I have found that the easiest plants to root from cuttings are geraniums and coleus. It's a quick and easy way to propagate a lot of new plants completely for free! Several rooted coleus plants. I plan on propagating a lot of plants this way so I don't have to buy as many. Traditional varieties of geraniums do well in sunny beds, pots, or hanging pots and don't mind dry conditions. Martha Washington varieties (aka Regal) are less tolerant of dry, hot conditions; however, they make especially beautiful plants for pots because they will cascade over the sides. Coleus come in a wide variety of patterns and colors and are excellent for shade or partial shade beds or pots. Both geraniums and coleus can be overwintered in pots in the house. If they don't look so great, they can be put in the cellar near a window until spring, as long as they continue to get watered. (Geraniums don't mind dry soil between watering but coleus will wilt if the soil is dry.) They will tend to get leggy and overgrown, but that's actually a good thing for taking cuttings! If you don't already have plants, you can buy a big plant in early spring and take cuttings from that. From the time you take the cuttings, rooted plants will be ready to plant in about 2-3 weeks. How to Root Geraniums and Coleus 1. Using scissors or kitchen shears, take cuttings by snipping off sections of stem right above leaf nodes. A cutting should include a length of stem with at least two leaves and one additional leaf node. A leaf node is a bumpy spot along the stem which may or may not have a leaf or stem coming out. (See the photo below for two leaf nodes along the lower part of the stem.) Cutting off right above a node will encourage the plant to create new stems and leaves from that node, creating a bushy plant. A node is also the place where new roots can grow from. Nodes have natural hormones which encourage new growth, whether it's leaves, stems, or roots. Geranium cuttings from soft, newer growth tend to root the quickest. You can also try cuttings from older growth, but I have found they take longer. A geranium cutting showing two leaf nodes along the bottom half of the stem. 2. On each cutting, trim off any stem slightly below the lowest node, like I did with the geranium above and the coleus below. Extra stem may rot and cause problems. Roots will sprout from the node, not the smooth stem. A coleus cutting showing a leaf node at the bottom. If you have a really overgrown plant, you can cut a long stem into a few cuttings. I got two cuttings from this geranium stem. This was one long stem cut into two cuttings. 3. Pinch or cut off any leaves from the lowest leaf node, or any part of the stem that will be in the water. Leaves in the water may rot. This honey jar from a local farm was the perfect size. 4. Place the cuttings in jars filled with plain water. The lowest nodes should be submerged. Leave the jar in a sunny place. Add more water as needed and remove any stems that look like they may be rotting. Cuttings can be planted in 2-3 weeks. Old-fashioned gardeners in my family swore by using brown-tinted glass jars and bottles for starting cuttings. Maybe the dark encourages growth? The next time I come across a brown glass jar, I'm going to try cuttings in both the brown and clear to see which works better. A baby food jar worked well for some little cuttings. 50 Obedient Plant Seeds/Physostegia virginiana/False Dragonhead/White False Dragonhead/White Obedient Plant/Excellent Cut Flower/ FL673 Physostegia virginiana, the obedient plant, obedience or false dragonhead, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is a rhizomatous perennial that is native to North America, where it is distributed from eastern Canada to northern Mexico. Scientific name: Physostegia virginiana Rank: Species Higher classification: Physostegia Obedient plant is a clump-forming native perennial that grows aggressively. From midsummer to early fall, spikes of purple or pink and sometimes white. flowers rise above sharply toothed leaves to four feet high. Genus name comes from the Greek words physa meaning bladder and stege meaning covering in reference to the calyces which inflate as they develop. Specific epithet is in reference to the State of Virginia which is part of the native range for this plant. Genus members are commonly called obedient plants because each individual flower will, upon being pushed in any one direction, temporarily remain in the new position as if it were hinged. Genus members are also commonly called false dragonhead because the flowers are suggestive of the flowers of dragonhead (Dracocephalum). White Obedient Plant makes an excellent cut flower and looks wonderful in a naturalized landscape or meadow-type setting. Propagation is from Obedient Plant seeds, and once it is established, it can be aggressive with spreading stolons. Even though White False Dragonhead can spread aggressively, the shallow roots are easy to pull out, and it can easily be divided in early spring or late fall. Both hummingbirds and butterflies enjoy the nectar from the Obedient Plant flower. GROWING OBEDIENT FLOWER: Obedient Plant seeds are easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun. A recommended method of sowing Obedient Plant flower seed is to sow the seed in the fall after several frosts have occurred. The flower seed will lie dormant on the ground until spring temperatures warm. Sow the seed in groups of 3 - 4 spaced 18 - 24 inches apart. Thin Obedient Plant seedlings to the strongest plant. False Dragonhead care includes dividing the plant every 2 - 3 years to control the rhizomatous root system (spreading). Deadheading will also encourage more blooms and also slow down the re-seeding. It has leathery, narrow, long, dark green leaves and white flowers gathered in dense, round clusters. Mainly used for decorating rock gardens, but also for flower beds and cut flowers. Sowing seeds should be carried out from the fourth to the sixth month under cover, while the arrival of September is a signal for planting. For the proper development of clothes, we should take care of the appropriate position. The ideal setting is full sun and highly drained soil. In this regard, the plant does not have high requirements - its development will take place on any type of substrate. The optimal spacing will be 300 x 300 mm. As for the application, in addition to the above-mentioned, it is worth trying various combinations of the plant with other species. Liatris Spicata Alba is the white flowering variety of the plant commonly known as Blazing Star or Gayfeather. It is an exotic perennial plant of North American origin that blooms in slender spikes of flower clusters. Its leaves, shaped like grass blades, are mostly concentrated at the base of the plant and trail up the stem. Liatris spicata alba is an excellent late summer flower that’s great for cut flower use. It also attracts wildlife, especially bees and butterflies. And it's very drought tolerant as well! While it typically grows 30 to 35 inches tall, at optimum growth the Blazing Star can reach heights of up to 4 feet. For best results, plant in well-draining soil in an area that provides full sun.
