The Ancient Greek Pottery project was part of an integrated unit which included the study of Ancient Greece in ELA, Social Studies, Visual Arts and Drama. In Art class, the students were introduced to the history, significance and various forms of pottery in Ancient Greece. They created their Ancient Greek pots using the coil method of hand building and took their time to adjust the shape and smooth the coils as they constructed their pot. The shape of the pots resemble the Amphora pot and the designs are inspired by those on actual Ancient Greek Pots.

Our awesome student teacher, Miss Flanagan, did these colorful clay creatures with the fourth grade artists. Everyone loves them! Miss Flanagan introduced the lesson with an excellent demonstration on creating a pinch pot and using the opening as the clay creatures mouth. She noted the importance of slipping and scoring every piece they added to their creatures. Miss Flanagan had water containers at the tables for the artists to moisturize the clay when it became dry. The ideas the student artists came up with were so creative! When they were grouped together they were rather creepy, in a good way. Each creature was unique. The excitement of their creations motivated the students to write about their creatures. They included their creatures name, where they came from, what they are, and much more. Congratulations Miss Flanagan on an outstanding art lesson! I plan on continuing this lesson with my students next year.
This simple and fun project introduces kids to the art of pottery and offers them a glimpse into how ancient peoples created the very first Neolithic pottery.
If you watch the news then you know we have had record rain here in North Texas for the month of May. The gardens are growing in and outside of the classroom, but enough is enough! My fifth graders just finished these amazing one day pinch pots.... They used Sax underglaze with a clear coat to finish last week. It is hard to get the clay to dry out and find a non stormy day to run the kiln this month! We have had 3 inches of rain on Saturday.... not to mention the amount falling right now. my little garden is lush... but it needs some sunlight to ripen the tomatoes. Third Grade is working on their last project.... We looked at Rufino Tamayo's paintings and drew repeated slices with oil pastels. 12 x 18 white sulfite paper Sax tempera cakes love these...I know I pinned this idea from Pinterest but can't find the pin.. Thanks to whoever originally posted this lesson. I was also treated to the Teacher of the year dinner last week with many of my long time teacher friends and family. my girls Art Teachers! My Family... 11 more days then stay tuned for Summer School Art!

You’ve made your beautiful air dry clay pot, now what? How do you seal and protect your finished piece? Air dry clay can be used to make almost anything. You don’t need any special tools or equipment and there’s no kiln needed to achieve a beautiful end product. But without a kiln how do you glaze a
