Today I want to share with you how to create a Butterfly Mixed Media Canvas. I get asked a lot about how I create these canvases and how I get that crisp rusty look. Well, today I want to share with you some of the products I use to achieve this look and how exactly to create it. Butterfly Mixed Media CanvasOne of the most important steps in creating a canvas like this is to layer the embellishments and create a 3D look. So I started with a layer of chipboard empty squares and added the butterfly on top. The butterfly is the focal point of the canvas so I made sure to create a raised surface from little chipboard squares so The butterfly would be raised above all the other embellishments. The next step was to add all the embellishments around the canvas. When I create a canvas like this I use all kinds of embellishments, some of them with more …

Over at the KaiserCraft Blog, they are having a challenge where the theme for the month of August is COGS! Well, of course I could not resist, could I? First I ordered the paper pack, die and stencil... Then I set about looking at the delicious paper and die cuts for two weeks... It would seem I work best under pressure and seeing as the deadline is tomorrow... I thought I better get going! So I found a canvas and got to work! I played with the cog embossing folder in as many ways as I could think of...In the end I used it in 7 different ways! First I took orange craft foam and made a stamp, which I stamped onto card stock with coffee archival ink. I inked the inside of the folder with Walnut Stain Distress Oxide inks and embossed the paper both on the negative and positive side of the folder. (these I also sprayed with water after they were embossed to make the ink wick) Then I did the same with Archival ink. Then I cut these into tags. For my feature tag, I also played with the distress oxides, but this time on my craft sheet and coloured a tag with Walnut stain and Vintage photo. When this was dry, I ran it through the embossing folder and then clipped the surface of the cogs with Ground espresso distress ink. Next, I die cut some card stock covered in sticky backed foil with the pipe die which I then inked with alcohol ink and painted with a little black soot distress paint. Having created all my pieces for the canvas, I then embossed a long strip of sticky back foil by repeating the embossing folder down the length of it 3 to 4 times. The one strip was slightly longer than the 12" canvas so it would wrap neatly round the corners. I added the black soot distress paint and wiped the excess off. When this was dry, I cut the strips down the length of the foil and adhered them to the sides of the box canvas. Having created all these things I now needed a base for everything to be layered onto so I stenciled the cogs down the right hand side of the page using the same Oxide inks and then inked the edge of the page with black soot distress ink. Below you can see how I started laying the tags out. The final touches were added from the die cut paper pack and here is the finished canvas Below are lots of close ups and different angles showing the foil edges.

"Madeline Island Demo 2" , 10x10, by Carol Nelson If you like green, this painting is for you! Of course you also have to like loads of texture (those are air dry clay leaves) and an abstract approach. I'm not a particular fan of the green side of the color wheel, but for some reason, I am very happy with the color harmony in this piece. 10"x10"x.75" Mixed Media on Panel/Available $340 Click HERE to purchase. Autumn of SewPaperPaint here with you today. I don't know about you, but I have seen a rising trend in blogland that has thoroughly peeked my interest. Dark and moody mixed media project seem to be all the rage! I have experimented with numerous mediums to show you that you can try these techniques with whatever products you have on hand. For this panel I used white texture paste through a dotty stencil, then splashed various Twinkling H2Os over it. The white shows through these transparent watercolors. For this panel I adhered various die cuts then painted it all with black gesso. Next I dry brushed white gesso to add highlights, then went over it all with Radiant Pearls. Again, the white shows through different than the black, creating beautiful depth. For this panel I sponged several colors of Lumiere metallic paints, then embossed a stamped image repeatedly in black. For this panel I first embossed the blob stamp in copper. Next I used Versafine ink with a grid stamp and text stamp. I lightly brushed PearlEx powder over the wet ink. For this panel I splashed white gesso onto my panel then splashed Radiant Pearls over that, and came back in with splashes of Color Bloom spray. For this panel I used white stencil paste and then splashed both Glimmer Mists and Color Bloom sprays over that. For this panel I used a plastic card to scrape Lumiere paints onto my black panel, adding additional colors while the paint was wet for a beautiful blending. My final panel was made by crinkling tissue paper onto a wet black gessoed panel. I went back over the top of the tissue with more black gesso. The highlights were created by lightly sponging Lumiere paint onto the raised areas of the tissue. I created a pinnable image for you to pin this tutorial to your Pinterest boards. I have turned each of these background panels into completed mixed media cards and will be sharing them on my personal blog for the next couple of weeks, so do pop by often. But I won't leave you hanging and will share my basic design recipe as you see in this card. First add something light and lacy to balance the dark, but still allow your beautiful background to show through. Try lace or holey dies. Next add some embellishments in a cluster. You can use several flowers, or a combination of ribbon, sentiments, stamped images, etc. Finally, add some more shimmer. You can add microbeads or chunky glitter, or sequins as I have. Just experiment and remember to keep balance with your color and a strong focal area/image. I'd love to hear your thoughts or tips on other ways to create dark backgrounds in the comments section below. <3

O.k.... I don't really know if there is a name for this type of art but I'm going to call it Blackened Canvas for now since most of the time they have a black layer in the mix. I've been intrigued by the combinations of texture, black and metallic paints but have yet to try one so I figured now as a good a time as any. What am I talking about? Well, Andy Skinner is the first place I saw them or something similar to them. His is I'm sure lots of complicated techniques because many of his pieces are cast but the texture is AMAZING! Similar art..... and art from Mark Perry - The Male Crafter... Mark actually made a series of videos sharing how he created this very canvas - Mark Perry Canvas. He also had some cool techniques but unfortunately some of the supplies (the modeling paste & glue) is from England. I tried a few combinations of various modeling paste and glues but nothing got the same chemical reaction that his did. Anyway, now that you know the look we're going for, I thought I'd show you my take on things.... First, instead of a canvas I'm working on an old game board. You know how I like to recycle "stuff" into art. and I'm also going to use pattern tissue paper as my initial layer of texture. First I started off by adding a bit of collage medium ~ I like Collage Pauge but you could use Mod Podge or even white glue (like Elmers). Next I crumbled up the paper and pressed it into the glue. I made sure I left lots and lots of wrinkles since texture is the key to this art. I used my heat tool to dry it quickly. Trim off the excess tissue... Then I tore up a facial tissue (you could use TP as well) and a cotton ball. I know, sounds weird but stick with me here. Next I applied more glue where I wanted to add the facial tissue bits. Then I added bits of the facial tissue and dabbed on a bit more glue I did the same thing with the shredded cotton ball. Next I used an Andy Skinner stencil to create a couple dimensional textured pieces using modeling paste. and in the corner I used a piece of punchenella to add more texture. Finally I used my finger to apply more modeling paste around the cotton ball area (just because it looked lonely up there). And here is where I'm going to leave it dry over night. Just to be sure the under layers of glue have completely dried before I move on with more layers of glue.
