I'll admit it! I'm a first year music teacher, and I want to try every idea that I find! Unfortunately, I have too many ideas, and more keep coming in. Pinterest, facebook, colleagues, and friends are always sharing. My problem is that I want to try them all. My Music Class is a way to keep the ideas I find for future use, and to help those that may need a new one. It's November already and my first 3 months of teaching were definitely interesting (in a good way). One thing I was not anticipating was the amount of time I would spend brainstorming classroom management ideas. Students are always better behaved when they come to specials. Right? Not so much... That's not to say that I was anticipating perfect behavior, I wasn't. I knew that it would be a lot of hard work. Throughout these beginning months, positive behavior in music class has been increasing steadily in all of the grades, except 1st. Last week I stumbled upon an idea that I loved on Pinterest. Quiet Critters! They are for primary and pre-k classrooms to promote listening. I love this idea, so I morphed it to fit my musical needs! Voila! MUSIC MONSTERS were born. They are simply pom-poms ($3.40 @ Michael's) and googly eyes ($2.50 @ Michael's). Hot glue gun the eyes to the pom-poms. The hot glue gun makes it almost impossible to rip the eyes off. :) The original idea that I stole had felt hearts glued on as feet. This just seemed like one more thing to buy, i.e. pointless. Each 1st grader receives a Music Monster at the beginning of the 30 minute music class. If they make a poor choice and don't follow directions or shout out their Music Monster is taken away. Don't be afraid to give the Monster back to them if they start making better choices. Everyone that still has theirs at the end of class receives a point. "UGH, POINTS! NO THANK YOU!" I know what you're thinking. Just one more thing to keep track of! My solution for this was to put it back on the students. At first I thought sticker chart. Then I realized that I had absolutely no space on any of my bulletin boards or walls. So I opted for a smart board lesson instead. This works well for multiple sections of 1st grade too (I have 3). It's basically a sticker chart with names and dates and the students move little pictures (whatever you want) into the boxes next to their names. This takes 2 minutes at the end of class; time totally worth it for the changes I've seen in behavior. ________________________________________________________________________ Adaptation: My mother is a special education teacher who often pulls students for 60-90 minute interventions. She had me make her some monsters (Quiet Critters to her). She gives 3 to those students who need constant reminders to follow directions. She will take them away as they go. However many you have at the end of class is how many prizes you get to select from her treasure chest.

The last theme covered in PB's "In Search Of..." birthday party was the Loch Ness Monster. For decor of this area I made a pool noodle nessie with blue mylar water rings around the humps. For the activity the kids built their own little nessie and raced it! To make the little Nessies there were small pieces of pool noodle foam to use as the body base and green pipe cleaners with (goggly eyes already attached) for the humps. Below are the mini Loch Ness racing lakes: The lakes are long planter boxes covered in black yard debris bags with rocks on the bottom and filled with water. To get their Nessies to glide across the water air propulsion by means of a straw was used. "...and down the Loch they come! In the final stretch it's Nessie by a neck!" Next up... Food and additional decor!

The bad thing about Monster High as a theme is it seems that not nearly as many games and activites pop into your head right away. It's not as "obvious" This party was much less orchestrated and more about letting the kids run around and have fun doing whatever they wanted When they first got there we let them get all decked out with dress up. Tutus, gloves, hair extensions, all sorts of cool stuff. I forgot to take pictures of all that but you'll see them wearing all their garb in the pictures Then they got their faces painted Birthday girl was dressed up as Frankie Stein so she got a full face of make up Even my 13 year old niece joined in on the fun. But instead of getting a flower or stars like all the other little girls.....she went for a replica of Mike Tysons face tattoo The face painting lady seemed pretty appalled. My brother inlaw was right there with her encouraging it.....I'm pretty sure that woman was judging his parenting style at that moment. But coming from a lady who was wearing a potted plant on her head....I think we can take that one with a grain of salt haha Next they played a mummy game. They grabbed a partner and had one minute to wrap them up as a mummy Then they were judged..... as you can see, the wig didn't last too long And the winners are........ Here's the group all face painted and dressed up And of course here is one of birthday girl screaming. I think Brooke will grow up to be a Woooo Girl. (How I Met Your Mother anyone?) This last thing isn't really a game or activity....but Imma show it to ya anyway I decorated a composition book with logos that I cut off of packaging that the store bought stuff came in and glued it on I made a sign for everyone to sign her "Fearbook" so she could keep the messages and remember this party forever The rest of the time the ran around and did alot of screaming.....I think that's code for "I'm having fun" in little girl world. Look under "Monster High Party" in my labels for more posts about food and decorations
