This file includes 2 mazes. On the first maze, students are expected to calculate the x-intercept of the linear equation. The equations are in standard form and in slope-intercept form. On the second maze, students are expected to calculate the y-intercept of the linear equation. The equations are in standard form and in slope-intercept form. Since my students keep INBs, I usually print these mazes at 85% actual size. This makes them the perfect size to cut and glue them in their notebooks. File for the Post: Solving Equations Flipbook I was looking through my interactive notebook this past week and thought I'd share one of my favorite lessons. I teach geometry and I always start the year off with a quick one-week algebra review to get my students re-familiarized with solving multi-step equations. Day 1: Students will tape down the steps to solving multi-step equations on the left side of their notebook and we go through the steps together and make little notes. It is extremely important that you make the flip-book with the students because if not, there will always be one student in each class that raises their hand and says "Something's wrong with my book!" I like to highlight each step that I take to solve the equation and I have students check their work for each problem. I do have students check their work in their flip-book, but the pictures above are notes to myself to remind students what to do. Day 2: Students walk in my classroom and cut out the solving equation puzzle pieces. Students have to match up the equation with the correct solution. I give them about 30 minutes to complete this puzzle in their notebook. Students show their work on the right side of the notebook and in some classes, I tell students what box is the top left one (depending on their level) and they have to figure out the rest. Once a student finishes, I have them raise their hand to show me their completed work. If they have their puzzle done correctly, I hand them this riddle worksheet. Overall, students were re-familarized with solving multi-step equations in 2 days! After that, we started algebraic properties of equality and introduced algebra proofs. Let me know, if you would like to see the foldables that I used for algebra proofs. :) I am also wearing this shirt any time we review solving equations... From my experience, students are visual learners and they remember any of my shirts! lol Click here if you want one too!

File for the Post: Determining Slope INB I used these interactive notebook pages during my linear functions unit. Student's had a pretty good understanding of slope and did not need a lot of review. First, we watched the "Adventures of Slope Dude" on YouTube to review the four different types of slope. We also went over this pinwheel that I created and taped it down in our notebooks. I did have students choose four different highlighters to highlight the graphs on the pinwheel. They used these colors throughout the lesson and highlighted them based on their chosen colors (this helped A LOT). After we went over the different types of slopes, we went over the following foldable. Next, students worked on the following activity where they determined the slope from a table, two points, graph, and equation. After they determined the slope, students had to classify it as positive, negative, zero, or undefined. Students were engaged and on task during this entire activity! Overall, I really enjoyed this lesson and will probably only make minor adjustments to it next year. So far, these are the interactive notebook pages that students have referenced back to the most this school year.

File for the Post: Parallel Lines INB Sneak Peek Below are some interactive notebook ideas for a Parallel Lines unit. Parallel Lines, Skew Lines, and Parallel Planes Foldable: This is a newly created foldable that I am planning to use with Mrs. Atwood's activity for introducing parallel lines, skew lines, and parallel planes. Students will discuss whether two lines are parallel or skew. Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal Foldable: I have used this foldable for the past three years but I do need to change "Same-Side Exterior Angles" to "Consecutive Interior Angles" (ducks head in shame). I really haven't changed this setup in the past 3 years since it seems to be working. We also play a dance, dance, transversal game with our fingers on the foldable (my room is way too small for students to be able to stand up). Students find it funny and always get a good laugh out of it :) Congruent Vs. Supplementary Card Sort and Chart: These pages are really aimed to help my ELL and special education students. I find that card sorts really help my lower level students. After this, students make a group poster over parallel lines (I will upload a picture as soon as I get back to work). Parallel Lines w/ Algebra INB Pages: This is pretty simple but students will be doing 6 example problems in their notebook. After this, I am planning for students to logon to their Google Classroom account and complete the following "maze activity."You can find the Google activity when you click here. Any other fun parallel lines foldables or activities out there? Thanks for reading!
This mini-pack includes two foldables for interactive notebooks, and two real-world activities working with sales tax and gratuity (tip). Students will simulate real-world experiences of calculating sales tax at "Math-Mart" and calculating gratuity at "Mathies Restaurant". Check out the preview for more information, including notes for implementing in your classroom! I've used these activities as a math center and in a small group. To save on colored ink, I just run off a few of the menus and department item lists and stick them in page protectors for students to share. Lesson Idea and Foldable for the Distributive Property for Algebra 1
Okay, while I enjoy teaching Algebra 1 my favorite class is geometry. I cannot state this enough. This includes all of my activities, notes, and games I use teaching parallel lines. My students have have really impressed me with the projects and even the game (considering the lack of enthusiasm for the study guide, go figure). Let's begin with the notes. I always have students shade in the acute angles one color and the obtuse another color. Then, we put that the angles that are the same color = each other and the opposite colors = 180. This really helps drive home the main two concepts. Then, we discuss the interior vs. exteriors. I hint that same-side starts with an S and so does supplementary. Trying to help them recall the terms as well. The foldable helps them organize the congruent angle relationships compared to the supplementary. We do a little practice on worksheets, playing review games to get the answers. On to the first project! Design your own city. I love this project, because I get to go over my previous profession in architecture and review urban design. I show them images from my portfolio of how they could one day take this project to design cities. Ya know, get them as excited as I am about the project. I get to even throw in a mini lesson about scale. You can find the rubric I used here. This was not my activity, but I loved the rubric and why re-create the wheel? Review. Practice. Time for the review game! I didn't want my students that would be all so tempted to keep my real dice, so I had them cut out a template out of paper for the next activity. I had played one similar to this activity before, but this one seemed to work out great. Again, why re-create the wheel? My kids surprised me in how engaged they were. They had the terminology down! We shall see how they do on the test, but right now I am pleased as punch.
