long time no post, but if you follow me you are used to that! i'm not going to apologize either...you know where to find me for more regular life updates...facebook, instagram blah, blah, blah. anyways, my mother in law turned 70 on may 3rd and my sister in law and myself (being the only two girls around) wanted to do something to celebrate her in a big way...my sister in law loves surprising her and wanted to do a surprise party. we started planning this event in january as we all have very busy schedules and trying to coordinate everyone is like NASA level coordinating. lol. i told her i would handle the decor part if she wanted to do the food and as we got closer to the date and the plans were coming together, i had an idea to do a long table covered in kraft paper with a photo table runner. i fibbed and told my mom in law that one of the kids had a school project about family generations and i needed to go through all of her picture albums/boxes. here is a sorta kinda tutorial on the photo table runner...which did turn out really cool and was the centerpiece of the party... you need: pictures iphone/ipad muslin fabric hot glue gun a movie step 1. decide how long and wide you need your runner to be. gather pictures...DO NOT use the original pictures...i went through 1,000's of pictures, it took me a week. 70 years of pictures and my father in law was a very avid document-er of life! what i did was take pictures of the pictures with my iphone, or my ipad (because my iphone ran out of storage). because the quality of iphone cameras now they are good enough to print 4x6's with no issues. step2. i wanted my runner to have a very uniform look, so i turned every photo black and white on my phone which you can easily do with the edit options that come on your phone already or with an app. i also had to crop some the images on my phone. step 3. upload all of the images to only site that has the options for white borders, square prints and 4x6's and best quality/price for printing persnickety prints like i said i wanted my images to look very uniform so i wanted them to have the white border on them and persnickety does that at no extra charge plus they have square prints and the more pictures you order the more money you save. seeing as i was ordering almost 400 prints that made a big difference. step 4. get muslin fabric the length and width you need for your runner. our long table was 30 inches wide by 18 feet long so i made my runner fabric 12 inches wide by about 25ish feet because i wanted to touch the floor on either side of the table hanging over. plug your hot glue gun in, put a movie on. i sat on the floor with a piece of wood (its supposed to be a shelf i think, i used it as a popcorn bar top at a party i threw) under the fabric. and just start laying the pictures down and put a small amount of hot glue on the back of each image and adhere it to the fabric. then repeat like 388 times, lol. really its not very hard, i watched walk the line and by the time the movie was over i was finished. i let the images hang off the edge so you don't see the fabric at all...the pictures overlapped each other...i mixed the square prints with the 4x6's and i didn't go in chronological order. as i would finish a section i would gently roll it up in front of me... a big roll not a tight roll. that is how i transported it to the party location as well...and not a single picture was damaged or bent. then after the party they actually just peeled off the fabric because i didn't use a ton of hot glue so now they are in an album. the other thing that would be a cool added touch but we ran out of time, i was going to use a white oil pen to write on the kraft paper table cover some of the dates of the images, or quick description of certain images and maybe some doodles my mother in law was surprised and cried and that's always my goal (...to make people cry i mean that in the best way, lol) so i did my job and accomplished my goal.

I had my son draw on paper each of the letters to form the word HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I photographed these letters, then digitised them in Adobe Illustrator by using the live-trace function. This enabled me to create large, crispy text. I printed each letter on an a4 piece of photo paper and then got him standing infront of my light to photograph him with each different letter. I then printed out these photos I took of him holding the letters on 6x4" paper and then hung them in the kitchen on our 'display line' (which is a shower curtain rail from ikea)

WELL! Our package for Bestafar's birthday (which was LAST Thursday) finally showed up one week too late!! Oh dear. The story behind that parcel could be a blog post in itself... but I won't bore you with that! I posted this picture last Thursday... and thought you might like a sneaky peak into what we packed inside. 60 is a special birthday, and we wanted to send something to Dave's Dad that showed we had put some thought into it... we didn't want jokey presents that just end up in the bin, and we didn't want a present that looked like we hadn't put the thought in. So we did some research. I had this idea that it would be cool to investigate the headlines of 1953 (the year Robert was born) and link those headlines up with some appropriate and nice pressies... so here you have it. Just in case any of you know anyone with a big birthday coming up, this idea could be adapted for any age! All you need to do is get on the newspaper websites and check out what happened in the year that person was born! After some research, and reading a LOT of random facts... we boiled the year down to the following key events. As we looked through the events, we were brainstorming presents they could link to that we knew Robert would like. We then wrote the headlines down on luggage tags with some little sketches to go alongside and make 'em look a bit more interesting- the challenge was to keep them "manly" and not too cutesy! After that, Dave headed off shopping with a VERY specific shopping list to get the pressies to match the headlines... Here you have them... Headline: The Queen is coronated after taking the throne from her Father, King George the VI Present: The King's Speech DVD - a brilliant film about Queen Elizabeth's Father... Headline: The discovery of REM sleep is first published by researchers Present: A nice pair of cosy PJs Headline: The Everest summit is reached for the first time... Present: A warm pair of gloves (remember my Father-in-law lives in Norway!) Headline: Sweet rationing finally ends in Britain Present: Robert is a HUGE boiled sweet fan, so this one was a no-brainer... Headline: The mass production of teabags is started by Tetley in Britain... Present: Some good old Tetley teabags - a little taste of the homeland! and finally... Headline: Robert is born in Derby on Valentine's Day Present: a beautiful and very accurate (!!?) portrait of her grandfather by none other than Ava M... We wrapped everything up with kitschy heart ribbon, as Robert's birthday is on Valentines day, and packed it off with the accompanying poem... Maybe an idea you could adapt and use?! Happy birthday Robert... sorry it was so late, but we hope you liked all the little pressies!!!

My momma (otherwise known as Arizona Lainey) turned 60 last week. She told us she didn’t want a party. (And then she invited like 30 people to her house for her own non-party.) But since she didn’t want us to throw her a party, we had to come up with some way to celebrate 60 years […]

This month has been super busy and a bit stressful, from the projects at work, trying to sell the loft, trying to purchase a home, packing and moving items into storage, Houston Rodeo about to kick off and the committee meetings obligations, classes starting this week for the PE (Professional Engineering) exam in April, and trying to be make time for Amos and myself. Deep Breathes.... Well my birthday was last week (right in the middle of all this stress) and I was home, which was nice since I missed it last year because I was offshore for work. Because I travel a lot for my work, I tend to miss holidays, birthdays, etc. so I don't really make a big deal for my birthday, but I never really did in the past anyways. So on Wednesday for my birthday Amos and I went to a local brewery that had a private event (~50 guest) and served a five course meal (that's right FIVE courses) and paired each dish with their beers. It was AMAZING and I will never ever forget that meal and experience; Amos got major points. So after Wednesday night, I went right back into go mode and another birthday behind me. On Saturday morning I was feeling a little down and overwhelmed by all of the stuff going on in my life, and not everything going as smoothly as I would like. So when Amos said that we were having a small dinner at a friends house I didn't think twice about it. I was ready to kick my feet up, drink some wine, and talk the night away; all while wearing what I woke up in, which included no makeup. When we showed up to the friends house with some other friends and went through the house to go to the backyard for some drinks we were out there two seconds when all of a sudden a large group of people came out and screamed S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E! All of our friends and family were there to celebrate my birthday and a close friend's birthday (who's birthday falls the day after mine). I have never been so surprised in my life and was truly overwhelmed by all of the love and work put into it. Amos wins again and got MAJOR points. The night was perfect and I couldn't have asked for a better birthday or evening. This all got me thinking that one day I would love to return the favor and do this for Amos. I don't know when or how, but I am determined to do it. Here are some cute ideas that I have seen so far. My sweet Momma recently turned 80! She has had several birthday celebrations and this was the one we held for her on Easter Sunday for family (her big day was the day before) at my sister’s house. I usually hang pennant banners for parties, but wanted to do something special for Mom. I cut out pictures of her throughout the years and made party hats this time…it was a hit! Look at how adorable she is! Mom and I seem to be color coordinated with each other and the banner… I added some party color to the living room by adding paper lanterns on the armoire… and hung more party hat pennants over the bar on the porch… I made party hat cake pops and truffles and sent them home with family and friends in my ever handy party favor purses… We all hold our glasses up high in your honor, Mom! A very happy and healthy 80th birthday! Technorati Tags: 80th birthday decorations, party favor purses, party hat pennant

Several weeks ago my husband was chatting with his brothers. At some point they realized that their oldest brother, Bill, was celebrating his 60th birthday this year. And as luck would have it he would be in town the month before the big day. This was a big deal, in the 31 years that my husband and I have been married, we have never actually celebrated Bill's birthday. He actually lives 11 hours away, so the celebration is either a card or a phone call. So, between the brothers, they decided that we would host the party. Was that OK with me? Sure.
Not my big 4-0, of course. Mine happened a few years ago! But it was my only sister's big milestone birthday and I wanted to make it extra...
