An educational and entertaining look at what life was like in Colonial America. From moldy food and dirt covered clothes to poisonous pests and extreme weather, American colonists did not have the easiest lives. Items that we take for granted like deodorant and soap were no where to be found. A great way to get kids interested in history and appreciative of our lives today.
I used to love this game as a child, and I could have used this souped up historical game even more when I had to memorize the Presidents. What a great project for you to do with your child, and th…
How much do you know about U.S. state geography? With this fun mapping worksheet, your child will learn all about Virginia!
The geography of Virginia has shaped both the history and economy of the state. It brought settlers and wars to the region, the federal capital to its edge, and its harbors facilitated commerce and an expansion of military facilities in the twentieth-century. Terrain and climate have determined the nature of the state’s agriculture and industries.
I've read about choice menus forever, but never tried it until just recently. I decided to created a menu to use during social studies review when students finish with stations early or we have a few extra minutes in class. I introduced the menu a week ago and you would've thought I'd given my students gold! They were thrilled!! I asked if they'd seen a menu before and we talked about a fast food restaurant menu. Then I asked what they would buy if I told them they had $5 to spend at the fast food restaurant. We played around with that a few minutes and then, with great drama, I introduced the social studies menu. I told them they had 50 points to "spend" and they were beside themselves - some even wanted to know if they could "spend" more! As we were going over the points values for different items one students even said, "All the fun stuff costs more points, but the boring stuff doesn't cost as much." I really had to pinch myself! How did this happen?!?! We've had a week to work on the menus and they have really been successful so far. I've been amazed at the creativity my students have shown. It's also been really interesting seeing which people and time periods they choose to work with. I think this is a strategy I will try to use again. Maybe next time I'll try something with reading - after a class novel or maybe even for their self-selected texts. You can click on the picture to download a copy of the menu. It is specific to 4th Grade Virginia Studies, but it might be a good place to start for a menu specific to your social studies standards. I'm linking up with Holly from Fourth Grade Flipper for another great Tried it Tuesday linky.
As teachers {esp. k-3} we know how important "Making Words" activities are for our students. The manipulation of the letters and exploration of letter sounds and patterns are skills that all students need {and enjoy}. Which brings me to my next point...... My school is doing a huge "paper cut down" this next year and so we've been brainstorming ideas on how to save paper. Making words takes a new page of paper each time you do it! This folder cuts down on a lot of paper and is easy to make, use, and keep track of! Plus, you can keep the folders for YEARS and use them for many other activities {chunks, spelling, sight words, etc}. I got the inspiration from my previous guided reading folders {here}. The students use their letter in their folder {held in place by velcro} to make words. They pull down their letters to the bottom of the folder, in the rectangle, to make a word {see picture below}. New England, region, northeastern United States, including the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Chart paper. Markers. Stick figures. Bubble letters. Lamination. Anchor charts. Anyone else love to make these? I could write a bunch of stuff about how they're not just pretty pictures but that's no fun. Here are some of mine! You better believe they remember the difference now! Not nearly as cute as I like to make them, but it was helpful. This goes with this: It can get annoying when our darling chickadees keep asking WHY they have to learn something, but truthfully, they do deserve an explanation once in a while. Maybe all the time :) Plus, the first text we used for the unit that introduced character reactions provided the cherubs MANY opportunities to react. Explaining theme to 9 year olds was challenging. Do you like how while I was making this chart I realized they didn't know what inferencing was so I threw in the definition at the bottom? I explained it later. Also I thought it was "inferencing" not "inferring" so I get to re-teach that one! Thanks, anonymous co-worker :) Goodness gracious do they love my stick figures. Summary, not summer-y. No, really. I had to clarify. This should be far larger, but at least you get the idea. It's kind of tough to describe culture. This barely begins to cover it. The best part of this lesson? When we talked about the "tradition" part, I meekly started singing the opening song of Fiddler on the Roof and HALF OF THEM KNEW WHAT I WAS SINGING. "Traditionnnnnnnn! Tradition!" Anyone?

This set of high-interest nonfiction reading passages is a great way to fit in social studies content while also reinforcing essential reading skills. Students can read about topics related to the geography of Virginia and answer corresponding questions. 4 informational text passages are included. The passages are written approximately at an end-of-4th-grade level. While they loosely correspond with the Virginia Studies curriculum (VS.2a-c: geography of Virginia), they do not necessarily explicitly reinforce content from those standards. Each passage includes 3-4 questions related to one nonfiction reading skill (either a review from 3rd grade or a new skill in 4th grade). Some passages also include vocabulary work. Skills covered in this set include: use context clues to clarify word meanings use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones to determine the meaning of new words use word-reference materials use vocabulary from other content areas use text structures to predict and categorize information explain the author’s purpose use prior and background knowledge, and identify new information learned use reading strategies to monitor comprehension How to use: I suggest assigning these passages weekly for homework, but feel free to use them however you like (i.e., morning work, guided reading group practice, etc.)! I know that everyone teaches various reading skills at different times in the year, so I've tried to keep the skills in this set appropriate for the early time in the year that most teachers are teaching the geography unit. Some of the questions are subjective; answer keys are provided where applicable. Thank you for visiting my store! Interested in more reading passages like these?
