This is a 1/6 plate daguerreotype of mother, daughter and her doll. They both have sausage curls and the little girl is wearing an off shoulder dress. The dressed boys and girls in these off shoulder dresses in the 1840’s and 1850’s. One of my favorite images from my collection of kids with toys.
First post after a short break, so I thought I'd share something special. This is such a gorgeous daguerreotype, but the really exciting bit is what was found behind the image. As will be seen in the comments below, there was a tiny pressed rose, a lock of hair, and two poems. The debate (and research) is still ongoing as to whether they are death poems, and who Rosa might be; indeed whether she is even the girl in the photograph. American quarter-plate daguerreotype in a bijou case. Estimated date ca 1850 based on the image frame and overall feel, but needs an expert eye on the clothing I think. 1/4 daguerreotype of a large family and their big dog.
This is one of the first daguerreotype I purchased on ebay about 13 years ago. The seller mailed her to me loose in a box and when she arrived the glass was broke and she had dents and scratches. I just pulled her out a box of dags and put a new glass on her and she looks much better. She is a 1/4 plate. Such a sweet face. I love the off shoulder dress took

1/4 Plate daguerreotype of a little girl (or boy) who looks scared to death who appears to have been crying. The child is holding mom’s bracelet which was suppose to calm things down. I love the hair and crossed legs. The image is by the photographer “Anson” who had a studio on Broadway in New York, N.Y. in the 1840’s and 50’s.
