Last week we did some fun things with learning the seasons. Most of our learning came from our small group books. I use Reading A-Z, so I can make the themes fit what I want usually. And it did PERFECTLY! After a few days of really learning about seasons, we did a craft idea on an apple tree. They kids should REALLY know the apple tree, right?! So that's what I like to do. I got the picture of the tree from {THIS} post. It's a JPEG download (the link is in the comments on her blogpost). After I printed it, I just used good old fashion white out to cover the season names. They colored the tree brown, then cute apart the tree. (She has them already divided up) They put the pieces back together on the paper and then I had them label the seasons, IN ORDER. Once they had them in order (they could start with whatever season they wanted), I called them back to the table to do their painting. And now they hang in our room - and I love them! Another activity they did was to write their book of seasons. I suggested they talked about the weather, the plants, what they see..... Some were a little more detailed in their writing than others... but hey, their illustrations show me they know it! Leaf Litter!! Our phrase we learned that week from our Scholastic News. I love it! We really talked about the trees being bare in the winter.... you know, in other states besides Florida. If you want this little book, you can click {HERE} to download it. Then, to end the week. they did a "My Favorite Season" writing, where they had to write to explain why...using what they like to do, what the weather was like, what the plants did and if the days were long and hot or short and cold. And we worked on having a closing statement. They drew what they would see if they looked out their window at home. What would be going on outside?? Then, depending on which season they picked, they glued it to that color background. You can grab this activity {HERE}. Living in FL, I really like stressing about the season since we don't really have seasons here. That is the one of the FEW downfalls of living in FL.
Did you guys see the big 16-wheeler pass you on the road on your way home? Yep... it ran over me today! Lately, I have been a bundle of energy. I've been going non-stop and determined that I will accomplish everything on my to do list. So far, the ambitious, conquer the world attitude has been working for me. It's almost scary how focused I've been. That is, until today. Today, I felt exhausted. I still knocked out a lot, but I am missing my two hour naps. If you've pulled out the world's smallest violin for my whining, I understand. I am deliriously happy, but goodness! It feels like Christmas break was months ago. However, I'm not tired enough to allow my hubby to type my blog. He just offered to type it and proofread it. Um, that would be a negative! Anyway, the last thing on my list today was blogging which means freebies. I have two new pages to share with you. We studied Dali and his The Elephants painting. We made our birds and similar to Dali. Long skinny legs and warm colors for the background. We also added a cool color bird to make it POP! I saw this lesson online and fell in love with it! It is a two day lesson that keeps the students engaged the entire time!

As I was blog stalking today I came across two posts that set my creative chi flowing. Mrs. Jump blogged about not being able to throw anything away (I hear ya sister). But it was her picture of the THOUSANDS of Themed erasers she had...oh my word it was like Christmas in June or something. Then earlier I read Lory's page and saw all those wonderful games she posted on her blog for chapter 5 of MWS. So I came up with these. One thing I'll work on with my first graders next year is fluency with addition facts. So here's my first round of simple games, all of these are plus one using a six sided die. I am working on creating game boards for plus 2 and 3, doubles, and adding two dice...so look out for those. I'm also working on ones for subtraction...but I've got to get busy on my post for chapter 6: Place Value and finish the game labels for Mastering the Basic Math Facts first. Thanks for all the suggestions! 6/21: I love suggestions on how to make any of my games better. Please don't stop leaving them...they help me to improve and see things in another way. That's what I want this blog to be all about...teachers helping teachers. Everyone have a blessed and light filled day. :) All you need are counters(the two sided ones with a different color on each side) and a die. Students can share the game board or have their own. They roll the die and add one to the number they rolled, look for it on their mat and cover it. If you share one game board they have to decided which side of the counters they'll use for the game...red or yellow. The first one to get five in a row is the winner. Here's the best part...I made boards for the entire year....goes to another point of increasing novelty (another thing Mrs. Jump said). The concept is the same but you change out game boards and use some of those themed erasers and there you go. Click on the picture above to download your set. I was little lazy...I changed the pictures but not the placement of the numbers(forgive me)...but they'll still get the job done.

Today my students finished up their President's Day activities. I would have liked to do much more - but time didn't allow. I can't believe how busy February is with all these holidays and special days. I think their President Portraits turned out adorable! I love how unique they all are. I got the great Venn diagrams from a teacher's blog last year (I am so embarrassed to say I can't remember where - if it's your creation please let me know and I will be sure to give you credit!) Here are the step by step directions my students used to create their portraits!

Because of last year's success and growth of my firsties in writing, Writer's Workshop has become the favorite part of my day. We have WW first thing to kick start our day. It's a calming way to get our brains started thinking. Here is the WW schedule we typically follow: 1) Mini-Lesson 2) Lights off, music on, silent writing time 3) Turn in time 4) Share time Here's some examples of introductory mini-lessons we have had. Completing a heart map: We use this to house all of our ideas. Each time students are stuck on what to write about, I have them pull this out for reference. Click on the picture above for your FREE heart map! Choosing a Topic and Starting: Using my heart map, I model how to choose a topic. We follow Lucy Caulkins writing curriculum so the steps I teach for writing follow her advice. 1) Draw your pictures 2) Write your words 3) Go back and add details to pictures and words 4) Color The posters are a reminder of what steps to take when completing a writing piece. Starting next week, I am introducing how to have a "writer's eye" and will refer to these posters also. Our first week of WW was very successful. I had every student engaged in their writing and each turned in at least one piece or more. Here's a look at where some of my students are at in their writing. The top picture is one of my low babies and the bottom one of my high babies. Looks like some of us (and this teacher) have a lot of work to do!
