There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different sides they should see the suggestion of a face and they can begin sketching. I'm going to show them how to use the lines to begin the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin etc... When they have a face they like they should go over it with sharpie. Now they can use watercolor to finish the portrait. I am going to emphasize complementary colors which is another way to force them to be more abstract, but also something Picasso did in his paintings. Student Work I passed out a copy of this worksheet to help them think of different ways to make the features.

Hey, friends! Today I'm sharing what my students, all of 'em, kindergarten through fourth grade, are working on to kick off the school year. I am calling them our Getting to Know You Sculptures! If you follow me on Instagram, than you know I've been sharing a lot of info about this. I've gotten a TON of requests for the sheet...so I thought I'd share it with you. I know this sheet has been unavailable for some time...the link has been fixed! You can get two sheets now! Here's one! Here's the other! I wanted to create a lesson that the kids would love, would be easy for all to be successful at and help me out...I have to be absent for the next couple of days. So I knew I'd want something that would be easy and fun for my sub. I created a video for my sub (I always do...it just makes for much smoother sailing) and I thought I'd share it with you...just so you could see how I explain this lesson to my students. Note: I WILL NOT be using the sheet with my kindergarteners. Here is the lesson that I do with them...very similar but without the sheet of paper as their guide: So far the kids have been LOVING this project and I am enjoying getting to know them! They've also been chatting to each other about why they picked what and it's so fun to hear them talk about it. I cannot wait to share with you how this lesson will progress...so stay tuned. You might have noticed that I DO NOT use glue bottles. You can find out why here. Not gonna lie, storage is gonna be an issue until we get these hung up! I'm having some classes do theirs on a white background 12" square paper and others on black. For open house night, I plan to hang them in a checkerboard patter. The strips of paper are cut frmo copy paper. In an attempt to stay organized, I'm keeping them clipped according to table colors. Ton Schulten is one of my all time favorite artists! I discovered him years ago when I found a calendar full of his paintings when visiting the Toledo Museum of Art. I was hooked! I love his amazing colors and abstract style. I created a Prezi of his landscape and cityscapes to share with my classes, (Ton Schulten Prezi). I find it very interesting how he adds lots of vertical lines to his landscapes, a composition usually created with more horizontal lines. This lesson was a COLOR VALUE lesson. Students used pre-mixed colors and various TINTS to paint in city buildings. The students mixed their own tints of blue for the sky portion. The last step, we used India Ink to outline and decorate our city buildings. This was a great lesson for every student. It was hard to chose which ones to photography! They will look great later in a group hanging in our hallways!

I am in love with stained glass. I would sign up in a heartbeat for a glass class if I had the time and money. Alas, I have neither, so I searched out a DIY version. This was really, really fun. And so open-ended. And cheap, too! First step, buy a frame from Dollar Tree. For $1. Next, find a coloring page. I originally wanted to do a mandala, but settled for something simple for my first try. Here is a sampling. Third, follow the steps in this tute. With glue and paint and stuff. I had helpers. I went back over the top with the black paint/glue I love it! Brightens up my kitchen window!
