I usually blog about our fashion design toy Shailie®. You can check out our web site if you have any girls. Ultimate Christmas gift! I just got back from camp and it was such fun, I thought I would share what we did. So the theme/scripture was: I shine because I know: Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6 I read the scripture to the girls and then I welcomed them to Hunger Camp. They screamed. Each tent was a district. There was a bag for each district with something hanging from it to help them survive Hunger Camp. Here is what was hanging from the bag and what was inside each bag. DISTRICT 1 SERVICE DISTRICT (camp lantern hanging from bag) Inside bag: 1. hats 2. cartds and push pins for the Notice Board 3. slap watches 4. sign to post outside tent door 5. service district responsibilities responsibilities: Each day post something you have noticed that is good about each girl. Each girl in this district will do 15 random acts of kindness. Wear you slap watch to remind you it is time to do service. DISTRICT 2 COMMUNICATIONS DISTRICT (mega phone hanging from bag) Inside bag: 1. hats 2. white board chalk 3. clip board with daily agendas and how many kitchen helpers we needed each meal 4. glasses (I got some cool Clark Kent glasses from Amazon) 5. sign to post outside tent door 6. communication district responsibilities responsibilities: Use the mega phone to make announcements and keep everyone informed. Post the daily schedule on the white board. Figure out who is helping with each meal. Wear your glasses because you are knowledgeable and intelligent. You will be easily recognized. DISTRICT 3 CENTRAL DISTRICT (disposable cameras attached) Inside bag: 1. hats 2. beauty supplies for hair and nails 3. quotes for the THINK ABOUT IT board 4. fuzzy socks to keep them warm at night 5. sign to post outside tent door 6. central district responsibilities responsibilities: Post an interesting thought or scripture each day on the THINK ABOUT IT board. (examples were included). This district's job is to give manicures and provide beauty treatments to the young women in camp. Each girls needs to feel special and beautiful. Take pictures of everyone at camp. You will be documenting the fun! Wear your warm fuzzy socks at night to keep you warm. We had the girls get the camp all set up (sleeping bags and tents) and then they could send a runner for their bag. The Hunger Camp theme was great fun. There was so much to work with. When we would need a volunteer for something they would waive their hand and yell "I volunteer as tribute!" So instead of parachutes appearing, we used balloons. I used mylar but they didn't last so if anyone does this, just bring some balloons that you blow up and stick them on a stick or whatever. The balloon would bring something to help them survive something at camp. There would be a note attached and it was from the Advisor. Here is what we did. They appeared at random times. The girls loved them! 1st balloon. Flowers with glitter center to wear on our hats to the "opening ceremony" 2nd balloon: Chap stick to help them survive the hike 3rd balloon: a necklace pen for the scavenger hunt This hunt took about 45 minutes. if anyone wants a copy of it I can post itl 4th balloon: glow necklace for the last night Everyone that did the scavenger hunt got a YW torch pin. Like the mocking jay it is a symbol of taking a stand against evil. For crafts we did duck tape pens. I used the tutorial from Pioneer woman http://thepioneerwoman.com/homeschooling/2011/09/duct-tape-flower-pencils/ I had 8 pens per girl and they did probably 4 or 5. We also tie dyed a neck scarf. The scarves were about 10 inches by 65 inches. The stake leaders gave us a canvas bag for their goodies so we tie dyed that too. My sister Laurel helped me make the hats. We got the pattern from http://www.etsy.com/listing/82161436/cadet-cap-military-newsboy-hat-pdf We had to adjust it a bit. The hat band was too wide for us and made the hat stand too tall. Laurel made the labels for me. They turned out so cute!! The most fun we had was doing a Flash Mob. We did it to the FIREWORKS song by Katie Perry. The girls practiced it a ton, and every girl participated. We had one in girl that refused to do it at the beginning, but she soon joined in and had the biggest grin when we performed it. It was worth all the practices to have her join the group and have fun. Happy camping! I know I am glad it is over!!
There are plenty of activities for camp, and one of the best activities is incorporating funny camp skits. These funny camp skits are sure to get a laugh!
I've been knee-deep into planning girls' camp. We leave on Monday, and I cannot wait! I've had several requests for a girls' camp songbook, so guess what!?! I have one just for you! All you
It’s time to start preparing for this year’s Young Women’s Camp. I thought I would write about our 2014 camp for any of those Camp Directors out there looking for ideas. Our cam…
First off the KEY, is to have an amazing Camp Director called! We have had an amazing camp director the past couple years I have been in and it really helps to have someone great in charge of the planning. Second...."YCL's!!!" or whatever your ward calls them are crucial. They are usually the Laurels. It is Young Women or Girl's Camp after all, not leader camp ;) It is so important to have the girls help in planning camp. Their ideas need to be listened to and they need to have assignments in planning and carrying out camp. I can tell you that during camp is where I have seen the girls just SHINE! Third... Make sure everyone is on the SAME page. Start by having a camp theme and have a few meetings, delegate responsibilities and start early, don't leave things until the last minute. Every single leader called has amazing talents and abilities. Use those abilities to help carry out camp. That is what helps make our activities successful, everyone contributes! Here is a sample of what we did at this years girls camp.... Our amazing camp director and YCLs came up with the theme for camp and began planning. They had an overnighter retreat to plan everything out. Our theme for camp was, 'There's No Place Like Camp", centered around the Wizard of Oz. Our YCLs designed our sweatshirts, bags and our camp flag. They also made signs for each of the tents. The leaders also had a couple camp planning meetings so everyone knew their responsibilities. Some of the things to think about when planning are.... Place: This is definitely something the girls should be included on. We decided to attend Camp Hunt at Bear lake. Which meant we needed firm commitments from the leaders and girls. It is a couple hours away and didn't want people coming back and forth. With choosing a Boy Scout camp came the opportunity to take advantage of some of their activities and resources. Last year, we went to our Stake camp and had a great time too. Here is a list of camps. Fundraisers: We did not have enough in our budget to cover camp, so our bishopric allowed for the Young Women and the Young Men to hold a fundraiser together. Check with your bishopric for their policy/guidelines. You can also refer to Handbook 2: Administering the Church (2010), 10.8.9. For the fundraiser we did a ward party. At the party was a spaghetti dinner which was free to ward members. The money was raised by both an auction, silent auction and flag sign ups. Each young women was asked to participate by providing a desert to be auctioned off at the silent auction and either a basket or service. Some of those services were babysitting, pet sitting, and mowing lawns. We had tons of amazing deserts and some pretty great goods and baskets. We had many ward members donate items to be auctioned too. One of the top items was a football helmet signed by a bunch of BYU football players. The young men were over the flag sign ups (people had the opportunity to sign up for flags to be placed in their yards on all of the major holidays). The fundraiser was a successful evening where, the ward was able to enjoy one another's company and the youth were able to raise some money for their camps. Our activity following the fundraiser we made thank you cards and treats for those ward members who donate goods and services. The below tags were stapled to Swiss Rolls. They could also be attached to tootsie rolls, nut rolls or fruit roll-ups. Forms: It's so important to designate a person who is in charge of handing out and gathering all of the required forms. With attending a Boy Scout Camp we had a few more forms we had to fill out then usual. Check with whatever camp you are attending to make sure you have all of the required forms. We held a meeting with all the girls and their parents to give them their forms and discuss camp. They were also given a packing list, a spotlight form, and a secret sister form. Transportation: How are you going to get all the girls to where they need to go??? Last year when we attended trek it was a fair distance away that we rented a bus and bus driver to transport all the leaders and youth. For girls camp we just made sure we had enough cars to transport the leaders and the girls. Parking was limited so we made sure we took the cars that could take the most people. We also took a large enclosed trailer that held all of our gear. Tents/Lodging: The camp we were attending, required us to sleep in tents. So, we had one of our leaders be responsible for gather the tents we needed. We have a very large group of girls, each group required two 10 man tents, except for our YCL's that only need one smaller tent. Plus we needed tents for leaders and for the men who had to be there. We gathered tents from ward members. We also were able to purchase three tents from our budget, that will be specifically YW tents and will be able to be used in subsequent years. Our girls are amazing and with the help of leaders and the men set up all of the tents. When considering sleeping arrangements, be careful to consider that each girl has a friend in their tent and no one gets left out. Priesthood Holders: For our camp we were required to have two priesthood holders up there at all times. Check with your bishopric and camp to see what the guidelines are. Food: Get someone or a few people who love to cook :) Our camp leader and our YW secretary are amazing!! Let's just say that for camping, we ate wonderfully, we even had deserts each night!!! Some of our meals included: Sack lunch from home Pulled Pork Sandwiches, fruit, coleslaw Smores Scones with Honey Butter Dutch Oven French toast breakfast casserole, hash browns, sausage Taco Salad, Chips, Fruit Hawaiian Haystacks, Fruit Peach Cobbler Breakfast Burritos (tortillas, hashbrowns, bacon, eggs, cheese), Fruit Chicken salad sandwich or ham sandwich and veggie trays Navajo Tacos Dutch Oven Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream Muffins, Bagels, Fruit Sandwiches for the ride home, chips and a Capri sun Shakes on the way home A lot of our food was prepped before coming to camp, such as the meat for the pulled pork, Hawaiian haystacks and taco salad. With the food you have to think about how you are going to keep it all cold (we had several large coolers), How you are going to cook it (we had a couple camp chefs and four dutch ovens (bring enough coals). And how you are going to wash the dishes. We had a dish washing station, which included a tub full of hot water and soap for washing, a tub full of hot water for rinsing and a drying station. All of our girls were assigned times to help with food prep and clean up. It worked great and helps them pass off certification. Be careful to be aware of any food allergies or sensitivities. Activities/crafts: We planned lots of fun activities for the girls. Before hand we had the girls pass off on their swimming so they could enjoy the water activities that were offered at the camp. The key is to have a lot of activities to keep the girls busy learning and having fun building relationships with each other. Here are some of the things we did: Each morning, had an early morning activity offered by the camp. We did the Sunrise Canoe ride where we woke up at 5:00 to go out on big warrior canoes out into Bear Lake to watch the sunrise. We also participated in the Polar Bear Plunge, waking up at 6:00 to walk into a cold creek that feeds into Bear Lake. You have to walk in to you shoulders repeat the Young women's Theme and then dunk your head all of the way under the water. Each morning we also had a flag ceremony with all of the other groups attending the camp. There usually some announcements from the camp and some songs sung. Our girls were able to do the flag ceremony one of the days, so they could pass it off in certification. We had access to the water each day. One of the days we took the girls tubing, which they ALL loved! The other days, they swam, canoed and kayaked. CRAFTS!!! It wouldn't be girls camp without a few crafts right?!? The first day we were each given our white canvas shoes and some sharpie markers to decorate our shoes however we desired! We have some creative, talent girls!! This was such a great idea, I wore my shoes pretty much the whole time, which saved my other shoes from getting dirty :) I love crafting with the girls, because their personalities just shine through there work!! We also made these adorable arrows. Our Secretary, Amy from Her Tool Belt & Amy's Projects is an amazingly talented lady which we are so lucky to have!! She cut out all of the wood for the arrows. The girls were given instructions and then were left to their creativity. We used different stains for the shaft part of the arrow. Then for the head and feather part of the arrows most of us used scrap paper and mod podged it on. I wish I would have taken picture of all of the girls beautiful creations. For the plans for these arrows here is the link. Retiring of a Flag: One of the neat events we were able to attend was a retiring of a couple U.S. flags. It was a neat thing for our girls to be able to witness. What made it more special were there was a veteran there who helped in retiring the flag. It makes you remember all of the sacrifices men an women have made and continue to make for freedom. Service Projects: Before camp we asked the girls, leaders and ward members to donate items to go into our Chemo Care baskets. While at camp, the girls were paired up and given a basket to put together to go to the Chemo Care unit at Primary Children's Hospital. The baskets were beautiful and will hopefully bring some smiles on some beautiful little kiddos faces during such difficult times. It is always good to include a service project, it brings a special spirit into camp and helps the girls feel the joy that comes with service. Skits: Skits are a tradition and a highlight of our girl's camp! This year the YCLs put together some bins full of props. The girls were divided into groups and then given a bin. From the bin they needed to come up with a skit. Even the leaders get in on the action!! Last year we had an awesome exercise skit with Richard Simmons. This year it was an America's Got Talent type skit. I love watching these skits the girls are so creative and you really get to see their personalities come out! Everyone has a good laugh by the end of the night too!! Testimony Meeting: Probably my favorite thing of camp is testimony meeting! There is nothing like sitting in a huge circle around a fire and sharing what you believe with people you have just spent the week with! Our youth have such amazing testimonies, I seriously love each one of those girls!! Devotionals: With our Wizard of Oz theme, came our daily devotionals. Each member of the YW presidency was assigned a YCL to plan a devotional with. We were each given a theme and a scripture. The first day was the theme of Knowledge and the scripture was D&C 93:36. The devotional focused on the the scarecrow and his desire for a brain and the importance of gaining an education. But not only an education, but also to continually be learning. Learning skills, talents, hobbies, and gaining more knowledge about the gospel of Christ. The girls were give a cute pin to pin onto their bags. The second day, was the theme of Love and Serving One another. The scripture was Mosiah 4:15. This was my devotional with my YCL. We discussed that the tin man came desiring a heart and that the heart symbolized love. My YCL shared her thoughts on love and service, then I continued with telling of if our hearts are filled with love of God then we will have a desire to love other's as He does. I share a quote from President Uchtdorf , "When our hearts are filled with the love of God, we become “kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving.”" I explained that sometimes it takes courage for us to forgive. Sometimes it takes courage for us to make a new friend. I then invited them to try to get to know someone there they didn't already know. Explaining the importance of loving and serving one another, as we do we may be a life saver in somebody's life. We don't always know the things others are going through and maybe a kind word or a friendship is just what they need. I further explained that like a piece of string we can easily break, but if you were to put 40 strings together and bind them up they are so much stronger. Each young women and leader are those pieces of string in each others lives. As they love, serve and support each other they will help each other to be strengthened and be able to be strong against what ever this world throws at us. I gave them a little handout with a life savor to remind them that they can be life savors in each other's lives as they serve and love each other. The third day, was the theme of Courage and the scripture was Mark 5:36. The focus was on the Lion and helping her find her courage. The YCL shared an experience of when she was able to show courage. The message was of not being afraid, to have courage. The fourth and last day, was focused on "there's no place like home", our destination of the temple and ultimately eternal life. The scripture was our year's theme scripture 2 Nephi 31:20. We live in a world that is full of confusion, but our path is marked for us. The path that leads to the temple. We just need to Press Forward. The girls were each given the temple pin to put on their bags. Here is how to make the temple pin: The temple charms were ordered from Doodlebead on etsy Cut red sparkly ribbon to 2 inches Cut blue gingham ribbon to 1 1/2 inches Earring Fittings Safety Pins Glue Gun and Glue Sticks Certification: This year we were really lucky and was able to spend part of one day doing the certifications that the camp offered. Last year, we tried to make certifications fun! We met before hand last year for an activity and did some certifications then did a little bit more up at camp including a relay. In the relay, we had teams, on each team was a couple first years, a couple second years, a couple third years, and a couple fourth years. Each had a task they had to accomplish before the next person in there group could move on. After each task they were given a puzzle piece. First group to accomplish all of their tasks and put their puzzle together won. Some of the tasks were, building a fire, doing CPR on a dummy, and doing a Buddy Carry. Sorry, I can't remember what else was included or what the finished puzzle said. Below is a download of the printables I used to teach the 3rd and 4th years First Aid last year. I had each of the 4 on a page items rolled up and placed in blown up balloons. The girls had to pop them, then we discussed that topic. Click below for the Free download. Also in the download are the papers to make some personal first aid kits. To do so cut a paper towel tub. Fold in the ends. Wrap the first aid paper around the outside and secure with glue or tape. Inside place things like bandaids, antibiotic ointment, alcohol swab, etc. If you've stuck to the end!! Wow, it was a lot right?!? Camp is a lot of work, but every ounce is worth it! Testimonies are strengthened, friendships are made and each girl comes away with a memory from camp. Get ready for the worlds longest blog post! I didn’t know how else to get all the information in, so here goes! I am our Stake YW Camp Director. We have stake camp every year and we have a…
mutual last week was such a party omigosh!🥳😂 hahaha ok, for the LONGEST time our mutual activities were not the greatest. My silence about them on the blog pretty much might have been me saying "uh, yeah, there was pretty much nothing to blog about without ranting" but finally, an amazing activity has occurred. But this activity didn't just fall out of the sky. We did have to do a lot of planning and work in advance, but finally, we were able to hold such an amazing and unifying activity. I won't go into specifics about our ward, but I'm a Young Woman, I've visited lots of wards, I'm in one, and I think soooo many of us are longing for more unity. I see this as the Lord has prompted revelation, and we saw President Nelson delegate the announcement of "bye-bye" to Beehives, Mia Maids,+Laurels to Sister Cordon. All of these inspired changes are amazing. And in my completely biased opinion, this activity is amazing! But, there is no one-time fix where everyone starts holding hands, singing kum ba yah, and never is cliqueish again. The perfect YW group wasn't built in a day! If I claimed this packet solved everything, maybe I'd be a better marketer but I'd be a liar as well. Even though I won't claim that with the purchase of this amazing activity, all about unity, and diversity, every issue will be gone, I will honestly say that doing this activity was a great step on the path to unity. Aaagh, I'm sorry, and I hope y'all don't think I'm just riding on the tail of the buzzword, but I have to keep saying it because in honesty, that's what this activity is about! The outline of this is for the Young Women to learn about themselves and others, notice the differences between themselves and others, and celebrate them. One of the steps in this was the Princess Posters. No one's unique personality can ever be captured in the Myers-Briggs 4 letters, but it's an easy way to talk about the different types of people in the world. So, I made a Princess poster for each one. All of these princesses are so fun and amazing, and that's the point. There simply isn't a bad personality type. I know it's a lil hard to see; I apologize, but do you see this in all its glory? We had so much fun taking Post-It notes and slapping them under our personality types and it was so eye-opening to see the diversity (or lack thereof hehehehe) of personalities in the group. We had 1 Campaigner, 1 Adventurer, 1 Architect, 2 Advocates....and everyone else was a Defender! Additionally, we rounded up and planned a bunch of activities to go with the results of the personality tests. There's enough to get you through the 1-hour block of "youth activity night" (still shaking off the death of mutual😂) but not so much that you get overwhelmed. There's scenario cards about certain church situations -- lessons, activities, dances, girls camp, and more. All these questions are designed to help you learn more about the YW and what makes them tick, especially in certain situations. We had some good discussions on those. Others involve talking & learning about others, walking around the room, and really, there's just a lot of good lessons to be learned from this. One of this was that I was so surprised when my close friend slapped her Post-It under Introvert. We're opposites, it seems like, and she is super outgoing, and I just assumed she would be an Extravert. Maybe she answered some questions wrong, I thought to myself. Everyone else in the group continued talking about their results, how accurate they seemed to be, etc, and then one of my leaders said, "I was shocked that YOU weren't an extravert." I was shocked at her shock tbh hahahaha, and then I realized that if my leader could be so wrong about my true personality, then of course I may be prone to misjudge what others are really like. This was just one lesson that I learned, but there are really so many more opportunities to discover these types of things in this activity. You can check out this activity packet on my Etsy shop and grab it for only $3.99. We spent a few weeks planning and creating the material, so y'all can know you're getting the maximum value with your purchase. If you're wanting to support the blog & what we do for free, be sure to favorite the shop on Etsy or follow us on Pinterest. And don't worry -- there are tons more mutual ideas (dang it I said it again!) freebies on the blog, which you can find the biggest comprehensive list of here. That was just so fun to create & host, and I'm beyond excited to share it with the world.

If you've ever had the opportunity to attend an LDS Girl's Camp, you may have enjoyed a Faith Walk. I hadn't even participated in a Faith Walk until I went back to camp as an adult leader. The premise is that the girls are led in the evening time to various "stations" to meet with someone who will retell or share a faith-promoting story or experience. To make the biggest impact, the girls are instructed beforehand, there is to be no talking during their walk. Additionally, only a handful of leaders or girls are given a lantern to carry. You want to make sure there is enough light to be safe, but dark enough to avoid distractions. Often times, our faith walks began at dusk. Lanterns (like pictured above) may also be strategically placed along the walk to assist those on the journey. You could also make something like this ahead of time for the leaders to carry, or if preferred, one for each girl. Remember, the idea is to create a spiritual ambiance, not a spooky one! After the first year of participating in a faith walk, I found myself being called as the camp director for the next summer. I definitely wanted to have the girls participate in something like that again, although a quick search in google left me hard-pressed for new ideas for a Faith Walk. (In the one we did, it was meeting "Women of Value", aka characters of women in history who represented each value, i.e., Joan of Arc, Sacajawea, etc.) I found I was left to my own devices, and after praying at great lengths, felt I needed to provide an opportunity for the girls to get to know our Savior better. As soon as the idea hit, the rest just came to me. Journey of the Savior is a faith walk in which the young women can meet those who knew the Savior and hear accounts of how He impacted their life. The final scene they come upon is a reenactment of the Savior, during His final hours, praying in the garden of Gethsemane. It was quite a sight to see, and all who were there were touched. I'm pleased that over these past few years, my google searches have turned up more ideas for Faith Walks, as they seem to be catching on. I wrote about our girls' experience on my personal blog, and I'm sure it was a Google search that has led others to send me messages requesting a copy of my Journey to the Savior Faith Walk. So, FINALLY, no more having to ask and wait. {{Click here to download Journey to the Savior pdf}} Good luck! Let me know how it goes! :)
So, I've been keeping really busy these last few weeks putting this camp manual together for my Camp Director. It has been so much fun. I LOVE Girl's camp. It is the highlight of my year and I feel so lucky that I've been able to go each year for the last 9 years. I went 4 as a camp assistant, 3 as camp director and 2 as a Young Women leader. What a huge blessing it has been to work with the Young Women. Camp can really be such a magical, spiritual time to renew and bond and strengthen one another as sisters. Yah, so I can't say enough about how much I LOVE girl's camp. So, do you guys get the idea that I really really love girl's camp? Haha! Without further adieu, I want to introduce this amazing camp director's kit. It really stems from so many years of compiling my own lists and coming up with my own layouts, plans, ideas and such. I thought I would make it available to others since there really is nothing else out there for this sort of thing, at least that I've found. This download kit includes: Camp Roster Girl's Camp Overview - general questions and planning Weekly overview page with hourly planning Daily detail page with a hourly plan and menu overview Packing lists for: Kitchen, Paper-Goods, Equipment, First-Aid Kit, and miscellaneous Weekly menu overview Daily menu guides with a place to write down the meals and the ingredients needed for each meal to help generate a master shopping list Food preparation reminders Individual shopping lists broken down by section: Fresh Produce, Bakery, Meats/Deli, Paper Goods, and Other Certification broken down by level from first year up to youth leader. Each requirement is listed along with a place for each girls name and checkbox for when they have completed that item Direction on extinguishing a fire, how to help accident victims, life threatening cases, shock, the Heimlich maneuver, rescue breathing, CPR and burns. You can teach the girls right out of your planning guide. A master overview of all certification requirements by year and by category. Assignment checklist Name slips and a Secret Sisters "Who has who?" form Notes pages throughout Camp Craft checklist Tent/Cabin Assignments Camp packing list for the girls & leaders 8-1/2" x 11" Sheet, Full Color. Recommend that you print on at LEAST a #50 paper (so as not to show through like in the pictures, but only if it bothers you ;) So those are just a few samples of the colorful pages that you get with your DOWNLOADABLE purchase. It has just a bit of everything you need to plan a great camp. These are meant to be downloaded, printed (according to your needs/wants, ie. if you have 20 + girls, print out a couple rosters and certification sheets, if you have 5-10, print out one, etc. ) If you want to make multiple copies for YOUR WARD ONLY, then that is perfectly okay with me. If you are purchasing for a stake or bulk, let me know and I will give you a discount. I really liked how this turned out in the spiral notebook. I had them bind it and hole punch it so that my camp director can store in in the binder with her other envelopes, certificates, receipts, etc. and can pull it out when she wants to take it in her backpack, shopping or somewhere without the bulk. BUT, it also works great punched straight to the binder. This is an at-a-glance certification spread for ALL 6 years. Nice to have in one section. I will be offering this spread as a free download soon just because I think everyone should have one. ;) I LOVE that this has everything at your fingertips that you need for directing camp AND... So, this year I went to Girls Camp as the "Crafts Lady". It was my 11th year at Girls Camp and my 2nd time as the "Crafts Lady". Honestly, I never know quite what to do as the Crafts Lady. All I know for certain, is I don't want to do the crafts we did when I was girl... no offense to any of the women who were in charge of the crafts I participated in as a young woman. I know they put a ton of time and effort into creating crafts specifically geared toward the theme of camp. But I remember one year when sunflowers were really in and we had a baseball theme for camp... needless to say, it wasn't pretty. I distinctly remember talking about how awful crafts were one year with my friends, when one confessed that each year, she pulled her 5 gallon bucket down from the attic, dumped out the previous years crafts and packed for camp. Then, once home, she unpacked her 10 gallon bucket, threw her old and new crafts back in, and stuck it back in the attic until next year. I don't want my crafts ending up hidden away in buckets! So, what to craft? Our theme this year is/was "Arise and Shine Forth", which is the Youth Theme for the year. Our camp director had already been using a camp fire motif on all of the Girls Camp paraphernalia. We could have made candles, but that is a little out of my comfort zone. (I remember one craft as a girl where we took already made tea lights, dipped them in wax, and decorated them with confetti shapes and letters while the wax was still wet.) After much contemplation, I decided to go with my initial thought which was "tie dye"! No matter how cool your camp shirt design is, most teenage girls aren't going to be hitting the mall in them. They will be worn to gyms, to work in the yard, to perform service activities, to go to sleep, and to create t-shirt quilts. Why not save a little on the cost and just do white shirts with a black logo? You could do a simple tie-dye recipe using cheap(er) supplies (which will end up with the dye fading with each and every wash), or you can get the good stuff. The good stuff can be found at www.dickblick.com. It is called, "Procion MX Fiber Reactive Cold Water Dye"; the customer service people are really awesome and will answer all of your questions promptly in regards to their products. They helped me calculate what I would need to dye 100 shirts. They were a little off on a couple of things, so here is what I would order if I were to do it again: 15 lbs of soda ash (three 5lb. bags) @ $8.36 each twenty-five 2/3oz. jars of Procion MX Cold Dye in a variety of colors @ $3.45 each twelve 16oz. plastic bottles @ $1.24 each You also need to purchase: laytex gloves for each crafter (200 at Walgreens for $15), and lots of rubber bands for tying shirts ($10). Beside these supplies, you need to round up sharpies, ten 5 gallon buckets, a teaspoon measure, a funnel, 100 grocery bags, and an empty gallon jug. This should put you in the area of $140.00 for just one craft... which was basically my entire budget for crafts. But remember, white t-shirts with only black ink are cheaper than color shirts with multiple screen runs. So, my crafts budget got a little help from the t-shirt budget. Since, our theme was "Arise and Shine Forth" I only ordered red, orange, and yellow dyes to create a flame effect. The pattern shown above is a "bullseye" pattern, which ended up being the easiest and most successful design for our theme (beside a classic spiral). Now, my one complaint is that even though we soaked the shirts, the ink barely bled. It was hardcore quality dye. We didn't get in the crevices enough. Some girls shirts were completely covered because they totally went to town with the dye. Other girls who didn't want to get too messy, ended up with shirts more like mine. However, if you're interested in tie dying, here are the instructions from Dick Blick. Before the craft rotation started, I had written each girls name with sharpie on the collar of their shirt. I organized them in the groups they were coming to craft it, and soaked them together. Then when that group arrived, I went to their buckets and wrung out each shirt and gave it to the corresponding girl. Then, I went over a few simple tying techniques, and the girls went to town. Once they are done dying, they keep them tied with rubber bands, and tie them into a grocery bag to soak over night. Now, I made the mistake of using my free time the next day to rinse and wring out each t-shirt. This meant cutting open each bag, cutting off the rubber bands, rinsing and wringing as best I could, all while standing behind huge industrial ovens in the kitchen. Luckily, a couple slacker youth leaders, a.k.a. my sister and her friend, came to my rescue half way through and helped cut open the shirts. I highly recommend NOT doing it by yourself. The job is a back breaker. I put all of the rinsed out shirts in my 5 gallon buckets and took them to a local laundromat. I was able to deliver them to each ward smelling like lavender, ready to be worn the next day for Bishop's night and the testimony meeting. Day 2 of crafts was way simpler... for most people. If you didn' t know how to braid, it was a little frustrating. I saw these seed bead bracelets on a fashion crafts site. They are stackable and adorable. Plus, the tutorial is very well done. I got my waxed linen cord from this seller on etsy. She was super cheap compared to others. And, it says to use size 8/0 beads, but 6/0 (which you can find at Michaels or JoAnns) works too. Also, for the latches I just got a couple of bags of shell buttons from JoAnns. You'll want to bring along some scissors, and safety pins for tension. I was able to buy enough supplies that each girl was able to make 2 bracelets, and I still had some left over. Before camp, I measured out all of the linen cord and beads, and placed each set of supplies in a snack bag. Then, I organized everything by color combination and let the girls choose once in the Craft Shack. It was a lot easier than managing the chaos of everyone picking out uber tiny beads from bowls. It would have resulted in a lot of waste. But, the bracelets were a hit! Even the Leaders loved making them and wearing them. I still wear mine multiple times a week. They're fun! Day 3 of crafts was not really a craft. I made a quilt before camp and all of the girls signed it for our Stake Young Women President (who had been released recently after 4 years of service) and wrote thank you notes that we assembled accordion style. If I had been able to do (not to mention, afford) another craft, it would have been glass jar lanterns. They were actually requested by our Program Directors to be used at our testimony meeting. However, the idea didn't come soon enough for all of the girls to bring their own jar, and buying 100 glass jars is expensive! But if you want to do it you could just have the girls put dot stickers on mason jars, then spray them with a clear frost paint, then remove the stickers, attach wires for a handle with cute ribbon for pizazz, and slip in a battery-operated candle. Or you could even use contact paper to trace out a word or the YW torch logo. So, for anyone out there on the hunt for Camp Craft ideas, I hope this helps you plan! P.S. Some pictures are mine, and some are others. If they are yours, and you stumble across my post, I hope you don't mind!
