New Year's Eve 2013 I made a resolution to be creative at least 20 minutes a day. Like many New Year resolutions, it worked well...for a while. You may or may not have noticed that my last blog post was June 13th. Wow. That's just too long ago. As July ends, the next few months become really hectic
What is your New Year’s Resolution this year? In the top ten New Year’s Resolutions are, “Getting Fit,” “Eating better,” and “Losing weight.” These are great resolutions to make, however these are classic goal setting mistakes. These types of goals are too vague to be motivating. Goals like these can leave you wondering when you actually […]

We survived our first day of school in 2012! I'm not going to lie though...I was missing my lazy afternoon a bit and I think my kiddos were...
Jerrica has been dying to make these. She has asked for months now, when the holiday is that we make our goal posters. Well, today was the day! We cut and cut and cut, then pasted together what we wanted our year to look like. I love goals and new beginnings. This is my favorite FHE lesson for the new year - Using Time Wisely. It’s filled with stories and ideas to help you use your time wisely. I think I use it every year just for ME to hear it again and again. Always have liked this quote from the lesson, “Time is all the capital stock there is on the earth; … if properly used, it brings that which will add to your comfort, convenience, and satisfaction,”
This is a fun lesson to start of the New Year and my 2013 gift to the TPT community. This lesson asks student to examine data and read an article on the history and origins of New Year's Resolutions. Students will then create a poster which shows their ability to select main ideas and display data...
You can lose weight, quit smoking, and do practically anything else if you set the bar low enough.
We have officially survived two days back at school. It's starting to feel somewhat like the norm again... so that's always a plus! Although I do
We're always blown away by Barbara's creativity and are super grateful that she's willing to share her amazing ideas with us! This feature comes a bit later that it should have, but this idea was too good not to share and we know it's a keeper for the inspiration folder! Barbara Gruener is an elementary counselor, character coach, and the creator of The Corner On Character, and this year, instead of crafting the usual New Years resolutions, she inspired her students to think beyond themselves and come up with ways that they can be intentional about being peacemakers and advocates of fairness! We love the Dr. Seuss theme and the way Barbara incorporates her students' resolutions! What a powerful visual aid reminding students that true peacemakers care enough to take action! How Will You Make 2015 Better? Background: Royal blue or specialty 'night sky' bulletin board paper. Title: "How Will You Make 2015 Better?" - Also included and a main focal point of the board/title, is Dr. Seuss' quote; Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Border: Use your students' resolutions, written on star cutouts, to create the border. Decoration: 1) The Lorax. Freehand the character standing on a log or find a clip art image/coloring page that can be enlarged using your classroom projector system and traced onto appropriately colored paper. {Here's a coloring page that would work!} 2) The Truffula Trees. Cut wavy strips from colored paper to create the tree 'trunks', then use art tissue paper to create puffs to attach to the top of each trunk. Rachael of Shore Society has a great tutorial for creating the puffs at her blog! If you want to learn more about this lesson, be sure to visit Barbara's website, The Corner On Character!!

Happy New Year! I know it's been some time since I've blogged, but we've been traveling to see family, creating new lessons, relaxing, and enjoying the holidays. I hope that you, too, have been able to enjoy this time with family and friends. I wanted to let you know about a free download I have for teachers to use this new year. It's my "2013 New Year Creative Writing Activities." Hopefully this will help with your lesson planning when you return to school after break. It includes four short writing activities for students that also practice critical-thinking skills. The first is writing a new-year resolution. I defined a resolution for the students and prompted them to think about what they wish to achieve and HOW they will go about obtaining that goal. I think it's important to include the "how" because some may resolve to do things that they could not possibly achieve. On the last page of this packet is a variation of his writing exercise that can be used for the first day of school or first day of the semester with a new group of students. After your students finish writing about their goals, file them away for the rest of the year. Bring them back out on the last day of school and let them see how much they have achieved over the past few months. Students love looking back at things they've written. The next activity is writing a list of the top 20 things they want to do in 2013 and the top 13 things they hope to avoid or not do. An example might be "Earn an A in class" for top 20 and "Turn in late work" for bottom 13. Another activity is writing an acrostic poem using the numbers 2-0-1-3. It forces the students to think of the number as separate words. An example might be: Two months of searching Zero purchases One goal Three prospects for the perfect prom dress. The final activity is a classroom scavenger hunt. Students are prompted to find certain things based on the numbers 2-0-1-3. Then they have to create their own clues for their classmates. These activities could be a nice addition to a time capsule or writing portfolio. I hope you and your students enjoy them. If you do, please consider checking out my other creative writing and critical-thinking activities: Creative Activities for ANY Novel or Story These new products are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
