Signed lower right, 'Landanyi' for Emory Landanyi (Hungarian-American, 1902-1986); additionally signed, verso, dated 1968 and titled, 'Passacaglia'. Born in Hungary, Emory Ladanyi first attended the University of Budapest Medical School. During his medical residency in Berlin, he was especially influenced by the works of Edvard Munch, forerunner of German Expressionism. During a second residency, in Vienna, he was also exposed to the works of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Kokoschka who were influential in his further development. In 1929, Landanyi arrived in New York and began to practice medicine which enabled him to continue painting. Outside of his professional work, he moved exclusively in the avant-garde artistic circles of New York City, becoming close friends of the composer Edgar Varese, the poet Kenneth Patchen and the writers Anais Nin and Henry Miller. After Pearl Harbor, Landanyi volunteered for service in the US Army and was commissioned a captain in the Medical Corps. During the duration of the war, he gave up his medical practice and in 1945, he resumed both his medical practice and painting. He exhibited widely and with success, including in Budapest, Berlin, New York, Chicago and Massachusetts Museum of Art. This painting is accompanied by a first edition of the hard-cover book titled, "Ladanyi", published by Abaris Books, Inc (1977), in which this work is illustrated on p.132. A tribute to Amy Winehouse Acrylic paint on canvas Signed Unique work Joanna Flatau was born in Varsaw, Poland. She graduated from Varsaw History of Arts University and from the Fine Arts Varsaw Academy in 1969. She has lived and worked in Paris since 1971, as a graphist and then as a painter. She was selected by the Modern Art Museum in Paris to exhibit in 1982 in the exhibition “Works on paper”. Since then, she exhibited in many solo shows in Europe (France, Poland, England, Switzerland) and in fairs in Paris like the Biennale internationale du pastel, the Salon de Montrouge, the Salon de Mai or the Salon Comparaison at the Grand Palais in Paris. The Fonds national d’art contemporain bought some of her pastels. She was exhibited many times by Cérès Franco in the “L’oeil de Boeuf” Gallery in Paris and in Cérès Franco private collection in Montolieu, as well as in “Idées d’artistes” Gallery in Paris and abroad. In 2008, she exhibited in Paris at the Grand Palais, at the IMA (Institut de Monde Arabe) and in Claire Corcia Gallery since then.
One of my newest obsessions in art is perhaps one of the oldest forms. Sometimes known as Hyper-Realism or Photo-Realism; this art strives to be as aesthetically accurate as possible. It's a fine line between realistic and interesting, and these two artists have perfected that line. Realist sculptor Jamie Salmon is a god in my eyes. In his own words he wants to, "make something that tells a story or moves people in some sort of way, not something that just looks very real...I need my works to have a certain degree of reality about them, but it`s more of a heigtened reality. This is also why I like to play with scale in a lot of my works as well. I think it is something that catches people off guard and forces them to confront their ideas about reality, and to also think about the idea behind the work more deeply." Check out this genius! If you wanna see more of his work check out his online gallery at http://www.avatarsculptureworks.com/index.html The second Hyper-Realist artist is the amazing young artist Roberto Bernardi, who devoted his life to photo-realist still-lifes. His work is breathtaking, and YES THESE REALLY ARE PAINTINGS! If you like what you see make sure to check out his website http://www.robertobernardi.com/
