There is nothing I like more than a simple quilt pattern that looks complicated. Behold .... the Jewel Box quilt. Shibori is a Japanese term for a method of dyeing cloth. Traditionally using Indigo, it is a form of tie-dyeing that goes back to the 8th century. This quilt block is called: Jewel Box I did not use a printed pattern - but by reading this post and the links below you will be able to master this :) Quilt Specs: The fabric: A fat quarter bundle of Shibori II from Moda. This collection designed by Debbie Maddy contains 20 different designs and I used all of them in this quilt. The 'background' fabric is Kona white. Note: If you are using pre-cuts like charm squares or a layer cake, do not starch or iron with steam - they will shrink. If you are using yardage for this project, feel free to starch and iron with steam. 1) Cut 5" x 5" squares from both the Shibori fabric and the Kona white: a TOTAL of (126) each. 2) Take (63) of the blue and (63) of the white squares and make (126) half square triangles. Use a scant 1/4" seam. Trim to an unfinished size: 4.5" x 4.5" A good tutorial for making HST's with charm squares is HERE from Scrapish. 3) Take (63) of the blue and (63) of the white squares and make (126) 4-patch units. See pix above. These should be unfinished at 4.5" x 4.5" Note: A good video tutorial on how to make 4-patches from 5" squares is HERE from Me and My Sister Designs. If you are using yardage (cut into 2.5" strips) - a video HERE from Missouri Star Quilt. Co. is helpful. Or, you just cut up 2.5" x 2.5" squares and a post HERE from Fabric406 explains this method. Assemble all your units the way shown above with the 4-patch focus fabric on the top left - and HST focus fabric - top right. That's it! Sew away and stack them up. I figured out my quilt size based on a 4" finished square. 14 squares across & 18 rows down = 56" wide x 72" long. NOTE ABOUT YARDAGE ... The yardage for THIS quilt in two colors would be exactly 2 yards of each. But since I would err on the side of caution with mistakes, pre-washing, squaring up and starch - I would get 2.5 yards of each to be SAFE ! Bonnie Hunter from Quiltville's Quips & Snips has a great chart for yardage if you choose to make this quilt with just two fabrics ... a light & a dark. Just figure out how large YOUR quilt will be - and go to the chart column for 5" squares. See the Jewel Box pattern emerge as you rotate these units and match up the triangles and the four patches. I made this diagram which explains the assembly in detail - the colors are not important. Two good links below are also helpful with instructions & pictures. *Make all your units (#1). *Take two units (#2) and rotate them so the focus fabric HST's are pointing out (#3) *Sew blocks together with 4-patches and triangles next to each other (#4 and #5). The backing is a beautiful midnight blue minky. Wavy line quilting was done with a walking foot in Aurifil 50wt. threads. Anyone care to do a quilt-a-long? I'll give you instructions on how to make a quilt block each week. At the end of 12 weeks you will have enough blocks for a great start on a quilt top. I was going to do a block of the month thingy with some friends back in Michigan, but before I got around to it, I moved away. So it has turned into a virtual quilt along, and you all are invited. I chose some 30's prints from my stash and a cream tone on tone fabric. Cut one square 4.5" from your print fabric Cut 8 squares 2.5" from your print fabric Cut 4 rectangles 2.5" x 4.5" from your background fabric Cut 4 rectangles 2.5" x 8.5" from your background fabric Sew together as shown And there you have your first finished block. So, who's in? I'll add a list to my sidebar linking to your blog (if you have one), assuming that anyone wants to join me. edit: this would be a great stash buster quilt-definitely use what you have-I know I am. :) The one thing that I will be doing, (but you don't have to) is use the same background fabric for each block. You can make this as scrappy as you want. The accent fabric will use little pieces. For instance, I had a fat eighth of the red, and I still had some scraps leftover. Wild Goose Chase May 21, 1933-The Wild Goose Chase block originated in the New England states in early colonial days according to Nancy Cabot when she wrote about this block eighty years ago in the Chicago Tribune. She mentions again that "triangles are the popular symbol of bird designs." "Any one who has noticed the flight of wild geese will recognize instantly the inspiration back of this design" she wrote. Her pattern for the Wild Goose Chase quilt sold for "5 cents in stamps or coin." I like the graphic look of this block. I paper pieced my 6" block and you can download the pattern here. Here are the pieces of the pattern and how they go together- For Electric Quilt owners, the block can be found as Wild Goose Chase or as #2906 in Blockbase. There's an old pattern at The Quilt Index. It's image #4. I love this vintage quilt with the color placement reversed though this quilt would be called an Odd Fellows Cross quilt by Nancy Cabot. Miracle of miracles! I sat down to sew a few Sea Glass blocks together on Sunday and before I knew it I had the entire top together, so I have a few photos that show it in a better light than the dull, greyish tones you've been seeing from the basement. I'm really happy with it. I was a little leery of trying to join all of the white strips accurately because I noticed that a few of them had shifted slightly off centre when I was sewing them, but it worked out. Because the edges of the blocks are all trimmed on the bias there was lots of give if I needed to adjust. There is only one join that I am not totally happy with but, short of making an entirely new block and inserting it, this one will do. In my mind that's what makes it a quilt (how's that for rationalization?!). The final size is 56" x 70" and I draped it over the love seat just to see if it will be larger enough to catch a nap under; it's perfect. Whew! It has since been pressed, the backing washed and sewn together, and on Friday I'll take it to the Roberta to work her magic on the long arm. It sounds like she is going to be able to have it ready for early October so I might just meet Jean's deadline after all....M

My local quilt shop had a two-color quilt challenge and I decided to enter. My first stop was Pinterest and I started pinning ideas on my board, appropriately named Two Color Quilts. I knew this quilt was going to be used on my bed and I wanted to introduce yellow into my room. Yellow and Snow (Kona's name for a creamy white) are my colors of choice. Next up to decide on a pattern from my Pinterest board, I went with this simple pattern My quilt was completed at the end of April, but I didn't want to show my quilt on the blog . All the quilts were suppose to be secret and the customers of the quilt shop voted on their top three favorites. No I did not win, there were 18 incredible quilts from a group of amazingly talented quilters. I am just so happy to have this beauty on my bed, it sure does brighten my room. The quilt is queen size and very hard for my girls to hold this up. I think they had very tired arms after all these pictures were taken. The quilts hung in the quilt shop from June 1st to July 1st, making a very pretty display at the store. Now I am so happy to have it on my bed.

......was the name of the quilting retreat which I just had the privilege of attending with many, many talented and lovely women. The guest at the retreat was Carrie Nelson of the well known patterns that are marketed under the name of Miss Rosie's. Part of what I will share with you in the next few days is her trunk show. She is now working for Moda and is living the dream! First of all the retreat is held in the beautiful and picturesque area located in the mountains just outside Midway, Utah. The name of the resort where it is held is called Zermatt. I posted pictures a year ago of the area, but failed to do so this year. Every year at the retreat we are given a fabric kit. This year we were presented with a 10 yard bundle of fabric to make a yellow and white quilt......5 yards of white and 5 yards of yellow. The goal is for us to get a quilt made to return to the retreat the following year. The staff at American Quilting in Orem, Utah sponsor the retreat each year, and the staff made samples of yellow and white quilts to share with us for ideas, I love this particular shade of yellow, and look forward to coming up with a great idea for a yellow and white quilt. You can see in the picture that I also purchased 2 fabrics that are possibilities to use for the back or for an alternate block. Also, in this picture you can see the thread holder which each of us was given at the final evening dinner. The bee at the end covers a magnet which will hold a scissors or a needle. Different colors of thread can be placed on the little holder which is shaped like a bee skep.......and of course yellow quilting thread. The little yellow holder with a bee motif on the side is a shaker that has been filled with sand to hold the wool flowers which they made to stand up in it.......so cute! At the retreat there are classes, and I taught just one, Autumn Sky. Other wise we are all in a huge room all sewing and sharing our love of creating and stitching.....a bit of heaven on earth! I felt so fortunate looking around this big room of quilters and being a part of such awesome company. I will have more pictures to share with you throughout the week. In our gift was also all of the fabric we need and the pattern to make this bee for our labels. I completed the top for this new little quilt which I plan on calling Cottage Garden. The blocks are 5 inches and have both wool and cotton used for the applique. The pieced blocks are 25 one inch squares. I loved putting together this little quilt. Now I need to get it quilted and the pattern written before spring quilt market in Minneapolis. The background for the applique blocks is a wonderful Diamond Textiles fabric and the border is a new Diamond Textiles fabric. I'm pleased to have a bolt of each in my possession for kits, which will be coming after market. I've been reading a little book I purchased called, Happily Grateful. It was compiled by Dan Zadra and Kristel Wills. I would like to share the forward with you. "May the joy that you give to others be the joy that comes back to you." "We are most alive", wrote Thornton Wilder, "when our hearts are conscious of our treasures." This is the gift - to hear and enjoy life's music everywhere. To be more aware of what we have than what we don't have. To appreciate again and again all the wonderful things in life that money can't buy....the wind in your hair, the sun on your face; a child's laughter, a loving family, a great friend. Truly, there is something in every day and in every season to celebrate with thanksgiving. In the end, of course, it's not what we have in our life, but who we have in our life that brings us joy. This seemed to express how full my heart is today. I was fortunate to spend a lovely four days doing what I love and surrounded by lovely women. And today we spent a glorious day with our daughters at a delicious brunch Abbie prepared for all of us, and then we were able to Skype with our dear Ben and his easy to love wife who have given us a precious little grandson, Wyatt. With that said, I hope your life is bringing you unmeasurable joy.

PATTERN is now available in my shop here. I started this quilt (and a few others) before the long stay in the hospital. I have been spending as much time as I can trying to get caught up on my quilts before baby Emma comes home. Love this pattern, but the solid colors made it a little plain. So I picked out a variegated purple thread to quilt it. It wasn't the exact shading that I wanted because it never went to white. You can hardly tell that it changes colors. Hmmm....it would be easier to see on a dark quilt. I was hoping that the curves in the quilting would soften the straight lines of the quilt. I'll see it better once it's washed!

This winter I'm in a bit of a sewing slump. I've decided instead of buying more fabric--I want to use what I have on hand, but use it differently. I don't have lots of solids, but I do have lots of fabric. Research: I've been gathering photo ideas to build Modern Scrappy Quilts this year. I'm looking for random--unexpected color combinations and simple construction. Here are some quilt photos from Pinterest that caught my eye. This first one I like. Its simple, simple construction. Take an oversized square, slice it, add some skinny strips, slice it again, and more skinny strips, and then square it up with a 10.5" sq. or 12.5" sq. acrylic template. No rules, just slicing and sewing. No sashing. 📷 The quilt below is so do-able as far as construction. Random. Improv. Beyond the white-black-gray bits for contrast, I see ORANGE dotted with this and that accent colors. Going shopping out of my own stash is fun. Using up lots of sub assemblies already sewn and ready to modify and use in another quilt. I am aware "stash diving" makes a huge mess in the studio. 📷 📷 Calling all Squares . . . calling all squares . . . come in squares. Above is the perfect solution for using up a half yard of this and that. Anything goes . . . but I'm drawn to the use of green, red, and papersack colors in this one. Works for me. 📷 Certainly I've collected lots of silly themes and strange patterns fabrics like this quilt shown above. What is most interesting? Look at the use of red and white fabrics paired with those weird fabrics. Liberally repeating red and white fabrics pull it all together, making sense of all the other weird fabrics that were added. It could just as well be blue and white fabrics paired with the weird fabrics. What I like most about this scrappy quilt is its simple construction, no sashing, alternating four patch. This light airy quilt is so pretty. I think I'll try this quilt concept right away!
