What a CRAZY week and weekend!!! We are finished with our state testing and school fair. Yahoo!!! This past week consisted of finishing up state testing, teaching students a dance for the fair performance, painting a picture for the fair silent auction, (see picture below), making over 50 candy apples for the sweets booth, and practicing for the teacher fair performance! Yes, I am one of 11 teachers who actually dances in front of the parents and students at the fair!!! I still need to put together portfolios and make a power point presentation. I love making a power point from all of the pictures I take during the school year. I must admit that it takes over a week to construct because I always find a way to mess up something! It never fails that every year I make some kind of mistake!!! For the portfolios, I save the students' work all year and use sheet protectors in binders. I like to put the work in order from the first to last day for the parents. I put all work in sheet protectors. The parents appreciate the organization of the work so much because it saves them the time of doing it over the summer. Also, students complete a summer writing activity. This writing activity is my favorite one of the year. The creativity that flows from the students' brains is amazing! Students are asked to write about a summer trip they have taken already or plan on taking. After editing the rough draft, students write the final copy of the essay on sunglasses. Students glue glasses on large white construction paper and draw a picture around the glasses. I was amazed the first time I did this with my class. I did not instruct them to draw a person. Open the class with the ice breaker, or just leave it on their desks to fill out as you greet everyone in. * Can also use as posters. Print at normal size or larger. Have students fill out the questions and color them in. You can even mount them on colored construction paper and decorate if time permits. Have the students do show-and-tell, and then hang them up on the bulletin board or take home to share with parents.
At the beginning of last year, I asked my students to fill in a "get to know you" questionnaire as they entered my room on the second day of school. On it, I had some personalish (I know that isn't a word, but I am feeling rebellious today ;) ) questions such as list your favorite food, what is something I should know about you, what you do at home, etc...The purpose of this was just to give me a little insight into the CHILDREN that my new students were. Here are a few of them. Now, you might be asking, what does this have to do with anything? Well, let me tell you, I actually did use these for something! At the end of the year, for my parting "gift" to my students, I used them to help me write "The Important Thing" pages for them! If you have been following my blog from the beginning (or even have just read back to the first few entries) you will know how much I love The Important Book. I do so much with it, from learning about reference books, or just writing letters to people. It truly is an amazing book to use in the classroom. Since we had been using it so much in class, I thought it fitting to create an "Important Book" page for each student to remember their year with me. Using the cards as my starting point, I thought of the ONE thing that stuck out to me about this student. For example, this student was such a great friend to everyone in class. She is the one who I could count on to help others and be welcoming. So the first line of her poem read: "The important thing about ______ is that she is an amazing friend to everyone." Next, I used the card to fill in the rest of the poem. The poem for this student went something like this: "The important thing about ____ is that she is an amazing friend. It is true that she studies hard in math and loves to play games online and enjoys crawling around with her brother. She likes things that are hot pink, is a great speller, and could play basketball all day. ______ is allergic to nuts, but not pasta and loves to go to Harns Ranch to eat. She also a wonderful class participant and a great partner to have. But the important thing about _______ is that she is an amazing friend." I can't tell you how ECSTATIC my students were to get these. The smiles were a mile wide...one even started to cry! I think because we had given so many of these to our volunteers and other people, they never entertained the idea that they would get one about themselves. It truly was a great end of the year gift for them. And best of all, it cost me nothing. Here are a few documents for you, in case you want to do something like this next year. First off, I made my cards on Vista Print, but here is a sheet for you to use. Then, here is the sentence frame for the Important Book that I used. And that is it. I know this takes a bit of planning (I mean, you do have to have the students fill in the cards at the beginning of the year and hold on to them!) but the smiles and reactions from the kids were well worth the effort! It is so difficult to keep your students focused and engaged those last few weeks of school when they are already dreaming of summer and being outdoors. If you are looking for a fun end-of-the-school-year activity, you will want to check this out! I was checking out Pinterest when I saw this amazing version of Scoot from The Primary Gal. I knew it would be the perfect way to get my kiddos outside while still working on content. This post contains affiliate links. We have been working on elapsed time in our class, and it has been very tricky for some of my kiddos, so I decided to use this activity to give them a little more practice. First, I had each student create their own elapsed time problem on an index card. I checked their work and gave them a number on their card that corresponded to the answer key that I made with one of the sheets. Then I had the students take their card and NEATLY write their question using sidewalk chalk on a section of the sidewalk. After everyone wrote down their question, it was time to solve the problems SCOOT style. Each child moved from question to question answering them on their recording sheet. The last 2 weeks of school, we've been working on our last part of our memory books. I posted about them before, you can read about them {HERE} and HERE Don't they look so beautiful all finished?! I love how they turn out! Some years I bind them with a comb, and other years, I just staple them together. It all depends on the time and volunteers. haha! I really love making these memory books each year. You can totally see the change that they make from August to May. I'm always SO amazed! So these are the last set of pages that we've been working on... I took their pictures and printed them at Walgreens and they glued them on their self portrait page. They finished thieir "Favorites" page... I also took their measurement with a piece of yarn and they put it in their coin envelope. I think next year I am going to take a picture of the school so they can glue it on there... I never give them a picture of me for this page - I love to see their drawings of me! AND, there is a file in the download of editable pages! All the pages that you can glue pictures down on are editable so that you can add the pictures on the pages digitally and then print them with the picture already on them! I also like to add text boxes and type in the students' names under the class picture. You can do whatever works best for you! I do this for our "Class Picture" page. I add in a big "good" picture of us all and type in all the names. Then I add in some goofy pictures for fun - one of the beginning of the year and one from the end. We also have an "autograph" day with our grade level, (I'll post about that later) and that is added to the end of the book... and the a note from the teacher is on the last cover page. I've had some requests from friends in other grades, so I have a PreK, Kindergarten, and 2nd grade edition too! These are just the end of the year pages - here's what is all included! 1-2-3 Come Make a SPLASH With Me! “Making a Splash!” is a super-fun writing prompt that your students will really enjoy. The craftivity is very versatile, as you can use it for the end of the year, or for back to school. It's a fun icebreaker & interesting way to get to know your students too. Simply choose the appropriate writing prompt “cover” for the flip-up booklet: * “Diving Into Summer and Looking Forward to…” * “Diving Into a New School Year and Looking Forward to…” Or Use the “Diving Into ____________ and Looking Forward to…” option, so that students can fill in their new grade, or something else that they are looking forward to. (Diving into sports & looking forward to playing soccer & baseball.) As you can see by the photo on your right, the writing prompt is the "title" on the "cover" of a mini booklet that flips up to reveal what students have written. The writing prompts are also easily diversified for various ability levels & grades; as you can keep things simple for younger students, who can write one or two sentences, or a list; while having preschool children dictate a few one-word answers. Older students will be expected to write one or two pages of more in-depth explanations. There’s a blank page pattern for this. There’s also several “brainstorming” worksheets for the various prompts, which can be used for prewriting. As with all of my products, I’ve included completed samples to give you some ideas, as well as enable you to quickly & easily zip off an example to share with your students. Adding a sprinkle of glitter and a school photo, along with a few 3D options, gives extra pizzazz to the project. Completed projects make a terrific bulletin board, or wall display in the hall. Because students trace & trim their own foot, each project looks a bit different. I’ve included several "Big Splash!" posters you can use for that as well. For additional writing options, there’s also an “I’m Ready to Make a Big Splash!” writing prompt cover, which works for both summer & back to school, allowing you a chance to touch on idioms if you want. My Favorite End of the Year Tips and Tricks 17 comments End of Year, Popular Posts, Tips and Tricks The end of the year is rapidly approaching. The kids are buzzing with excitement. YOU are buzzing with excitement. But, not only is it an exciting time, it is a crazy time. So, I thought it would be fun to share my favorite tips and tricks for the end of the year. What follows is simply what works for me, and I truly hope you are able to take an idea or two away with you. I've got a few tips for surviving the last few weeks of school, as well as some tips to use now that will help you transition into a new school year with a bit less stress on your plate! One of my favorite things to do during the last 20 some days of school are projects. This might look like different things to different people, but to me, I love to do my annual American symbols research project. We started our symbols project last week and will continue to work on it until the last full week of school. The content is always fun and exciting for the kids and they love making all the fun art projects to go with their writing. You can read more about this project here, and you can check it out on TPT here. Another project that my students work on is an end of the year book. It's perfect to use when our curriculum starts to phase out (meaning we run out of lessons). I use various components of my End of the Year pack and turn them into a book (I bind them after they are finished). We will start this project next week. We work on these projects daily and the kids look forward to them every.single.day. They offer consistency, but also variety, and the students are always excited to share their finished projects with their families. This time of year often leads to behavior challenges. It can feel like the kids are teetering over that line that leads to chaos. But, if you really sit back and think about it, you will always be able to find several students who can always be counted on to set a good example for others. These students tend to be quiet, and are often overlooked when you're dealing with redirecting the teeter totters. One way that I let these students know I care, and that I see how hard they are working to set a good example for others is by writing them special notes. They always get excited when they walk into the classroom and find a card on their desk. They also love to take them home and share them with their families. It's such a quick and easy way to let those students know that you are aware of their wonderful efforts. While I'm all about keeping my kiddos engaged in learning up until the last minute possible, I'm not a total meanie. After all, summer IS right around the corner...you can't deny it, so you might as well embrace it. This year, I am using a countdown chain. At the end of each day we will remove the bottom link. As an added bonus, some of the chains have fun events written on them. Yes, I wrote them by hand. Sometimes I like to do things "old school." Hehe. Anyway, when a chain link with an activity written on it is cut off, the students will get to do that special thing the following day. You can grab this FREE countdown sign {here}. :) Here is a breakdown of the fun activities they will encounter over the next 20 days: Mustache Day (students will be given a fake mustache to wear) Sidewalk Chalk Art Fest (15 minutes outside decorating the blacktop with sidewalk chalk) Bubble Fun (students will get a mini container of bubbles and about 10 minutes to play with them outside) 10 minutes of extra recess (who doesn't love more play time??) 30 minutes of flashlight reading (a class favorite) Choose a new brag tag Watercolor Fun (let your students get creative and paint a fun picture) Movie Party (I like to save this one for last) At the end of the year, we are required to take everything off our walls and pack it up. Rather than save this job for the work day after the last day of school, I start removing stuff a few weeks in front of the last day. Once or twice a week, I simply remove one or two things from the walls, starting with things that the students don't need (think decor). This saves me lots of time so that when that work day rolls around, I can work on organizing my storage closets, or cleaning out my desk. At the end of the year, I like to start thinking about the year ahead. I know it seems crazy, but I am a planner to a fault. I typically prep as much as I can this time of year knowing that when I return in the fall, I have a few less things to worry about. So, what exactly do I prep? I prep the materials that I know I will need for the first week of school. Don't worry, I won't show you everything I've prepped, but here's a looksie. This is from my new Return of the Nerds back to school pack. I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am to use it next year! I prep letters and forms that I know I will set out at our Meet and Greet the Friday before school starts. You can find these (and many more) forms in my Back to School Forms pack. I also prep things the students will use all year long, like these amazing spelling dictionaries from Lucky to Be in First. I also laminate my name plates for the next year. I know that some people prefer to write the names and then laminate, but I've always laminated and then written their names with permanent marker. It works for me and saves me a ton of time in the fall. How do I accomplish this while still planning and prepping for the end of the year? I commit to coming in a little bit earlier a few days a week. This way, I can stake my claim on a copier (they are a hot commodity) and make a few copies here and there. Write down your ideas! I don't know why, but I always get ideas for the following year toward the end of the current school year and I don't want to forget them. So, I write them down. I just use a boring old spiral notebook and write down things that I might want to do next year. I bring the notebook home and add to it during the summer. Another way I save myself some time in the fall is by keeping my cubby drawer labels in tact. That is, I keep them attached to the cubby drawers. Rather than type students names on these, I write them with Sharpie. Since the label is laminated, I simply wipe the names off and leave them in place for next year. It saves ink, lamination pouches, and time (because I don't have to entirely remake the labels in the fall). To remove Sharpie from a laminated surface, simply use some hand sanitizer, a bit of elbow grease, and a tissue. Easy peasy! I do hope you were able to take an idea or two away today. A through Z Countdown to Summer This A through Z Countdown to Summer is a great activity to help me get through the last 26 days of school! This activity consists of 26 fun, low maintenance activities that correlates with each letter of the alphabet. Each daily activity requires little to no prep work for me!! Many of these end of school countdowns that I have found online require a lot of prep work, notes home, reminders, etc. I did not want that! These daily activities are simple activities that provide a fun brain break for the students! Here is a look into each day's activities: Here is the poster I display the letter of the day on. Here is a look into C's activity! This is what the letter activity cards look like: I begin this activity 26 school days before the end of the year. I start with the letter A and do a letter each day until the last day of school. Each day I surprise my students on what the letter activity for the day is going to be. They love to guess what activity they will get to do for each letter! I roll up each activity card and place it in a balloon labeled with that letter. At the end of the day we pop the balloon and see what fun activity we get to do for the last hour of the day. I save the activity for the end of the day because the students are usually checked out by then. Plus I use it as a behavior management tool. If I have students that are not behaving during the day I have them miss out on the fun end of the day letter activity. End of School Alphabet Countdown Booklet This activity is a great end of the school year concept review! It's perfect to use for any grade! I begin this activity 26 school days before the last day of school. Each day I have the students think of the concepts they have learned throughout the school year that begins with the letter of the day. For example, on the first day of the activity the students think of all the things they learned throughout the year that begins with the letter A. Some examples are: addition, antonyms, etc. I like to have the students work on this activity independently first. Then, after some time I allow the students to work with their group. Finally, we share and discuss what everyone put together as a class. As we share, I use it as a great review opportunity. The students will amaze you on how much they remember and what they can think of for each letter! Here is an example of how many things we think of for each letter! It never fails I have tons of students who do not purchase a yearbook each year. So I put together this autograph booklet for the students to sign during the yearbook signing party. Since it's only one page I make one for each of my students...even if they bought a yearbook. I made it just one page (copied front to back) because let's face it the last thing I want to do at the end of the year is make tons of copies. LOL! Also it never fails we are always running low on paper at the end of the school year. This booklet works out perfect and there is always plenty of room for all the student's signatures. You also can have the students spend some time coloring it! :) Here is the front of the booklet. There is a spot for the student's name, the school, and year. Memory Binders/Student Portfolios I keep a memory binder/portfolio for each of my students throughout the school year. I keep writing activities, special work, assessments, etc. in the binder. I use these monthly dividers to organize all the paperwork inside each binder. I run the dividers on cardstock paper and allow the students to color it how they wish! At the end of the school year the students get to take their binders home as a parent gift! It's a great way to showcase each student's progress throughout the year to their parents! I can't believe this school year is almost over! I have only 5 days of school left, Friday is our last day. I will miss my kiddos dearly but am super excited to start my summer vacation. Next school year will bring so many changes for me~~new partner teacher (SUPER excited!!), best friend coming back to teach at my school (YAHOO!!), my baby girl is starting 8th grade at another school (BOO HOO!), and 3rd grade will switch classes next year (SCARED!!)!! I will need the summer to get ready for my 27+ new students next year. I love planning over the summer and will need this summer to prepare for switching classes. Switching won't be so bad, I will teach religion to 2 classes. I am really happy about not teaching science and social studies too!! I always have a hard time fitting these 2 subjects in on a daily basis. My students have been really busy these last 2 weeks doing my favorite all-time writing assignment~~~My Favorite Summer Vacation! Making a Self-Portrait is always a fun and enriching activity. I am going to describe today's learning experience in doing a self-portrait. First I showed the paper the students would use and I projected it on a white board. You can use a smart board of course or just chart paper I recommend having something to model drawing yourself. We defined self-portrait and thought about which shapes we have in our bodies. I asked a volunteer to come to the front and asked the kids to help me draw her face. I add all details the children suggested. We were happy with the results. I modeled using a mirror to look at my face and draw it. After I finished my self-portrait I asked for the students input. They were fantastic. They asked me to add my hanging little camera purse, earrings, glasses, my toes showing because I was wearing sandals, patterns from my dress, and more. I then handed a mirror and a paper to each student. The kids had a ball looking at their faces in the mirror They could work sitting or standing. And look how this girl is so focused on her drawing. Even the younger ones did an amazing job. Princesses did a great job too. After they were all ready we shared them with the group. I have different ways of sharing work. We had targeted our audience. It was our friends and our parents as we thought that this would be a great portfolio piece. The way we chose to share today was for me to hold each drawing and ask the class to tell what they liked about the self-portrait I was holding. And here are some more self-portrait samples. One to be used at the beginning of the school year and another one for the end of the school year. This way we can see the progress of drawing a self-portrait.
