Have fun exploring star patterns with this fun, Constellations Printable Wheel. This hands on constellations activity is great for kids of all ages!
The kids sure enjoyed our unit on space! Here is a look at all the learning we did. We started with learning about the sun and the stars. Then we learned about the phases of the moon. They made these flip books to show and tell what happens during each phase of the moon. We then moved on to study the orbit of the planets. We made a few different activities to learn facts about each planet. After learning about each of the planets we BLASTED off into space as astronauts and wrote adventures of where we would go and what we would see and do if we were in space. They used their space books to help them write facts about the places they would visit. I am amazed at how much they love to write! We finished up our space unit reading Space Case by James Marshall. It is about a space “thing” that comes to Earth and gets to go Trick or Treating and goes to school. We made our own space “things” and wrote adventures about what they would do if they came to Earth. Again, they AMAZE me with their creative writing! These are hanging in our hallway and we have had a lot of compliments on their work. All of our centers were also space themed. They played a vowel race game to learn their space vocabulary words. They played number blaster and filled in number grids of 10 more, 10 less, one more, and one less using a 100’s chart. This game was Money Mission matching coin combinations and amounts. They did a long and short vowel sort. At this center they raced to the moon and back to earth using a number line and math facts. They sorted real words from Earth and nonsense words from Mars. Scrambled in Space was using our written language and grammar skills to write complete sentences using correct mechanics. They made an ABC order book using our space vocabulary. Blast off Math Facts used addition and subtraction facts that equaled 9, 10, 11, or 12 and our listening center on Planets and they played Space Bingo. We did some SENSATIONAL SPACE learning!!

Week 2 of thematic learning is in the books! Want to know what motivated me to change how/why I'm teaching this way...find it here. This week's focus was all about things in the sky: Sun/Moon/Clouds. Below are the books that formed my instruction this week. I like to kick off the week reading non-fiction. It never fails to draw them in and get them excited! We read Gail Gibbons book, The Moon Book. We reviewed what it meant to be curious and how good readers ask questions before/during/after reading. I showed them the cover and gave them a few minutes to write down a question before we started reading. They took their papers to the floor with them and also wrote down a question while I read. After I finished, their response was to write down a question they had after hearing the book. Then I showed them our moon chart and they got to choose 1 question to record. Throughout the week, we took a few questions each day and tried to find the answers. We moved onto reading fiction. Another reason I read non-fiction first is because many of the fiction books will mention facts we read about and their faces light up and you can tell they feel smart! When they heard the title of this one, they were super excited to listen. This book is GREAT for reviewing or even teaching problem and solution. Here are some reader's responses they turned in after reading. {This paper can be found here} We also read Owl Moon which is a fabulous book for having students record their visualizations. The author describes the setting in great detail. {This paper can be found here} We changed gears and focused on the sun next. This book below introduces the sun and relates it to a child's life perfectly! After reading, we wrote down questions it left us wondering or some we already had on this chart. Then we read this book in search of answers for our questions. I had students who heard the answer to their question write it on a "ray of sun". If they did not hear their answer, they simply wrote down a fact that "wowed" them. I put the two together, and made a ray of sunshine with our questions/answers/facts! This week there haven't been much clouds to observe in our clear blue skies, but we did stop for a day to read this cute little story and discuss some cloud types. I didn't snag a picture but this book pairs great with a lesson on characters and their feelings. The very last thing we did was put together a model of how the sun, moon and earth work together. I found a freebie here at More Time 2 Teach's blog. Kids LOVED this. I even challenged them to go home and explain it to a family member! Hope you found some neat ideas to implement! It was a fun filled week!

We are studying space in science this week. We have already made a list of the objects that can be seen in the daytime and nighttime sky, so now we have to learn some interesting facts about them. For example, did you know that the Sun is a star? And, more importantly, the Sun is a flaming ball of gas! Check out this Delk original! Oh, the Sun is a flaming ball of gas! (ball of gas) Oh, the Sun is a flaming ball of gas! (ball of gas) It gives us light. It gives us heat. It's energy can't be beat! Oh, the Sun is a flaming ball of gas! (ball of gas) I was singing that all day! Move over, Dr.Jean, where's a new song writer in town! We also looked at another Delk Original about the Moon. (no video of this one) Twinkle, Twinkle Little Moon Twinkle, twinkle little Moon I'm so glad I'll see you soon! You shine in the darkest night, You reflect the Sun's bright light. Twinkle, twinkle little Moon, I'm so glad I'll see you soon! Feel free to share the musical love! In reading, I chose a Hebrew folktale that I love- Joseph Had a Little Overcoat. I really like the moral- You can always make something from nothing.I really like this story because it shows kids that it pays to be imaginative! Anyhoo- the story starts out with the phrase, "Joseph had a little overcoat. It was old and worn." Which reminded me of a writing prompt that Mrs. Hughes shared with first grade! So, we made a list of all the things that Joseph turned his overcoat into. (um, pretend the picture is really good) Then my students were to pick something from the list and fill out this paper using our adjectives chart and their imaginations. For example: I have a coat. It is fluffy and soft. It can keep me warm but it can't bake a cake. I like my soft, fluffy coat because it is pink. We watched the video of Joseph. I found it on Youtube, so you can watch it too! It leaves off some of the items from the book, but I can't complain! In math we looked more into using addition to help us solve subtraction problems. My students did really well! Most of them chose to use the 'count up' method, and everyone did a great job with the math game we played when we were done! I didn't get a picture of the game, but if we play again tomorrow, I will. Literacy center pictures: Read, Build, Write cards Rhyming word match Spelling texters Our Daily Brain
This school year I embarked on a new journey: I became a First Grade Teacher! My prior years as a resource teacher helped me, but it was still quite the experience! I told a friend earlier in the year that I had never seen so much snot before :) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my first grade kiddos and I know this is the place I am supposed to be! Since I am unable to craft as much as I used to, I wanted to start a new blog to share some of the things I am making for my class, in hopes that another teacher can use them for their class. We are currently reading a story relating to Space in Reading and studying patterns in Math, so I have made a "Make a Space Pattern" center. Click on each picture below to get the downloads. You will want to print 2 copies of the pattern cards so the kids will have enough to make the patterns. Hope you like it! HOW TO MEASURE Measuring tape: The essential tool needed to begin a wallpaper project is a measuring tape. Measure the height and width of your wall in inches, and avoid using phone apps for measurements. To ensure accurate measurements, measure the tallest and widest point of the wall and then order wallpaper panels accordingly. Tips for measuring irregular spaces for wallpaper installation: 1. Irregular walls: calculate tallest and widest point, trim excess during installation. 2. Sloped walls: measure tallest and widest point, trim excess during installation. 3. Walls with doors/windows: Calculate the total width and height of the wall as if there were no windows or doors. Install and Trim around elements when installing. 4. Multiple walls: group measurements for a single order, request artwork to match for individual murals. Ordering wallpaper panels: Our wallpaper panels are 24 inches wide and 76 - 124 inches tall. To cover a wall, multiple panels are needed. Select the number of panels from the Quantity selector on the listing. HOW TO ORDER: To order the right amount of peel and stick, prepasted or unpasted wallpaper panels, measure your wall in inches and choose the corresponding size in the product listing. If you need a custom size that isn't listed, contact us for free custom sizing and an art proof with the cost for each material. Multiple panels are needed to cover one wall. Overlap: All panels have 0.25 - 0.5 inch extra for overlap beyond listed width. Overlap areas can be removed or left but we recommend keeping overlap. Do not consider overlap when calculating the number of panels needed. INSTALLATION: Check quality before installing. Contact us with questions. Install on smooth, clean, painted walls in good condition. In case if you newly painted a wall then wait for three weeks after painting before installing. Reserve ~1 hour per sheet to install. Follow our instructions, not other internet guides. Do not install if: ✓ Walls are textured/sanded (smooth first) ✓ Painted <3 weeks ago ✓ Dirty/dusty ✓ Moldy/humid ✓ Paint is lifting ✓ Exposed to heat/flames ✓ Covering old wallpaper/elements DIY: Our Peel and Stick, Prepasted materials are best for the DIY projects, you don’t need a professional installer to install wallpaper. Professional installer: For unpasted wallpaper, we recommend to hire an experienced installer and check quantity and material beforehand. Request they check quality and follow our instructions. Hello Everyone! This week we enjoyed learning about things we see in the night sky. Splat the Cat came to the rescue! His latest book "Splat the Cat, Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Rob Scotton is a sweet little story about that cute little cat's adventures at a sleep over in his back yard. Love this little guy! After reading the story we brainstormed all the things he saw while outside at night---not everything was in the sky, but it was a good list . The kids then wrote a list of their own in their Reader's Response Journals, and got started on making a Splat the Cat of their own. I let them choose what they wanted to write on the moon shape. I think they turned out so cute!! The kids did a great job listening, following directions and adding their own personalities and details. To celebrate our observations of the night sky we had fun with our third grade book buddies reading to flashlight (starlight reading) and wearing pj's. We also investigated how the craters were made on the moon. Starlight Reading! For your free 15 page mini Splat unit, click here! Unit contains a couple moon poems, Splat the Cat Craft Connection patterns, and Science Investigation! Up next? Stellaluna! LOOOOOOVE this book!! Till then...enjoy your night sky! Come back soon for a peek into our wonder-filled first grade day! Joyfully! Nancy

Patterns in the sky science unit for kindergarten and first grade.
Soar through the galaxy with these out-of-this-world space activities for first grade students! From learning about patterns in space to seasonal daylight, this NGSS unit has plenty of ideas that can help make any classroom's trip through the cosmos extra engaging.
Space and planets is turning out to be my favourite Science unit so far. For some reason, it seems that kids just have such an excitement to learn about the Solar System. Last week we studied constellations. To end off the week I had the students pick one of their favourite constellations for a small project. I decided to buy a writing template and constellation information on TPT (Not something I do often - usually only when I plan a lesson last minute and are really in need for some ideas for help!). Here's the link: Crazy About Constellations. In the booklet, the idea was to make the constellations from golden stars on black paper. I decided to add a little extra fun step with have the students drawing the stars with yellow and white crayons and then painting over them with black watercolour. Here were some of the results: A perfect display for the hallway and a great way to end off a crazy week!
We have learning about the things that light up our night sky. Yesterday we learned about the moon. We also made a book about the different phases of the moon. Today we read books about the stars and learned lots of interesting facts. We made a book about constellations and wrote some of the facts we learned about stars. Then during center time we made a shooting star art project.
First off, congrats to Steph for winning my Amber Brown is Not a Crayon Novel Study! Hope you enjoy it! :) We started our space unit this past week and it is definitely a high interest unit! The kids are learning so much!! We had to squeeze it into a week and a half this year {last year we had almost 3 weeks!!} But we are making sure the kids are having the same fun and learning just as much as last year! We started our unit by learning how we get night and day and the seasons. We read in our science books and did some demos of how the Earth rotates and then also orbits around the Sun. We also had Bill Nye demonstrate :) Then we made these cool little things to show how the Earth orbits around the Sun. We then moved onto the Sun. We read several books about the Sun and showed lots of cool pictures! We made an anchor chart together to record some of our learning. {this is from last year-forgot to photograph this year's!} They learned soooo many facts! Then the kids made their own Sun Facts craftivity! They each got 6 rays and the wrote a fact on each ray. Since the Sun is a star, we moved onto stars and constellations. Again, we did a lot of reading and we got to show some really cool stars, nebulas and contellations on the smart board! Then we had the kids make themselves as a constellation and write 4 facts they learned. Next, we had Moon Day! This was a big hit :) We read lots about the moon {and Bill Nye helped us again... HA}. Then we made an anchor chart to record some of our learning {again, this is last year's photo}. Then we had the kids make these really cool moons! You can see how to make these moons {HERE}. And they had to write at least 4 facts to go with their illustration! And our most anticipated activity was our Oreo Moon Phases! We have amazing parents who sent all the supplies we needed to make this happen! We used icing {err, "moon glue"} instead to attach everything {even the strips of paper!} So there was no cutting or gluing involved! It sure helped to have our document cam that day :) The icing was also good because they could eat their projects after the got home and taught a family member :) This coming week we are going to learn all about the planets. We will read lots of nonfiction books and use my All About the Planets pack! We will also throw in some Valentine's fun all day Thursday! Then Friday is a professional day! Hope everyone has a great Sunday and a great school week :)
Let's get to the BIG news first! I promised I had a really good reason for my lack of blogging... Mr. Hubs and I are having a baby :) I just turned 15 weeks today, and we are so excited! We will find out if it's a boy or a girl over spring break! We could definitely use any prayers we can get, as we have had a bit of a rocky road in the past. Okay, so I do have something school related to post! We started our space unit and the kids are having a blast! We learned all about the sun and the moon, made some anchor charts together, and then we had our kiddos do some informational writing about each. And OMG! They rocked their writing! To make these awesome moons, each child needs a paper plate and a straw. You need to mix a little water, black paint, karo syrup and dish soap in a dish. Have the kids blow BIG bubbles with the straw, and push the plate on it. If you find that the bubbles aren't showing up too well, add some more black paint. You also may need to press the plate on top of the bubbles more than once. Here are photos of the process. {Just don't use a small, square dish, haha}. And you can't learn all about the moon without doing Oreo Moon Phases!! We just did half of the phases to save our parents from having to buy a gazillion Oreos! Also, we normally have our kids cut and paste labels for the phases, but we ran really short on time that day... Whoops! Live and learn :) I have no idea why that picture keeps loading sideways... Of course the kids thought this was the best day EVER! We tend to hear that when we do yummy activities :) This week has been all about the planets! We got some awesome sets of books about the planets from our PTA and Scholastic that we have been reading, along with my All About the Planets {Nonfiction Reader and Journal}. The kids are really enjoying space, and I feel like we could spend FOREVER learning about it! But, we must move on next week :) Happy Hump Day, everyone! We are almost done for the week!!
Day and night art helps preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten kids explore science with art! Compare day and night skies as they create.
Hello Everyone! This week we spent a lot of time learning about the sun. Our science curriculum stresses learning about and observing the objects in the sky. We learned some amazing facts about the sun through reading books and getting on PebbleGo. We had some fun with some poetry and created a craft connection to go along with our poetry. (I forgot how much fun finger painting can be!) Our Circle Thinking Map Remember this song?? Brainstorming words for our poetry Fingerpainting a sun Writing our own poem around the sun For your free printables and pics of the charts and craft connection, click here Tomorrow we plan on measuring shadows. But I think it's going to be a rainy, rainy day. Next week?? The Mysterious Moon! Stay tuned!! Joyfully! Nancy
Hello Everyone! We have had a great week finishing up our study of the night sky. Stellaluna was our literature focus this week. I shared our ELA and Math activities unit earlier this week, but I wanted to share the cute little Stellaluna Craft Connection we made today with part of the Shel Silverstein poem. We cut some bat shapes, eyes, teeth, wrote the poem excerpt on a speech bubble, added details and tah-dah! The cutest little Stellalunas I've seen! Great job kiddos!! I couldn't wait to hang them from the ceiling---Upsidedown, of course!! To grab your cute little Stellaluna pattern, click here Have a good night and don't forget to turn on the dark!! :) Joyfully! Nancy
