Measurement and time are usually short lived in my room! That is unfortunate, but it is true. We spend a LOT of time on number sense, addition, subtraction, and place value that I feel like these three first grade standards get short-changed: 1. Nonstandard measurement and comparing/ordering of lengths 2. Telling Time to the half […]

Are you struggling to find kid-friendly math assessments that cover every 1st grade Common Core Math standards? Are you spending all of your hours creating them yourself? If you are, take a break for a moment and check out the math assessments I created just for little first graders. Before creating these assessments I had 3 goals in mind: 1. Make them kid-friendly. (Don't overwhelm them with boring and complex instructions.) 2. Hit every single standard. (Make this your go-to resource. No more scavenging online every night!) 3. Make it teacher-friendly. (Make it easy for teachers to grade and record results.) These assessments are broken down by each standard so they are perfect for pre-assessment and post-assessment. You can easily see if your students have mastered the standards and use the results to teach or reteach. I hope these assessments will save you some time this year :) Each packet includes: - A copy of the standards used for the packet - 2 assessments for each standard (exception: 3 assessments for each standard in the geometry packet) - Whole-class recording sheets for the teachers - Answer key 1st grade Common Core Standards covered: - Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Number and Operations in Base Ten - Measurement and Data - Geometry As a taster, you can download the freebie by clicking the picture below. :) Here is some feedback from teachers who have used these assessments:

Alright...has anyone else had one of "those" weeks! You know...the ones that haunt you and give you nightmares for weeks on end! Well...maybe it hasn't been THAT bad but I honestly never believed in the theory of THE "full moon" until I became a teacher! The little darlings have been a tad on the crazy side this week. So during this "time of the month" {hey...we all have them right???} that they feel their hands always have to be moving and their lips just tend to follow, I find every way imaginable to put those hands and mouths to good use. Needless to say...just about everything on my lesson plans have been revised...and revised...and revised! Where is that little poster about pretending that it is on the lesson plan again??? {Riiiiggghhhtt! wink! wink!} Thanks to the world of blogging, I did a little borrowing to create a fun activity to get my kids all into multiplication {as if they needed motivation...they have been begging and dreaming about this day...I SWEAR!} Abby over at "THE" Inspired Apple used this same concept to teach place value. It worked PER.FECT for multiplication as well! Thanks Abby for all of your awesomeness! Here is how my little marshmallow multiplication lesson went down: I introduced the concept of multiplication using a Brainpop Jr. video with the all too famous Annie and Moby. After the initial introduction, we used marshmallows and fruit loops to show how we can use repeated addition to solve multiplication problems. For each problem, the students used marshmallows to show the number of groups and fruit loops to show the number of objects in each group. My little crazies sweeties at work! They truly are the most amazing students ever...even on weeks where they are a little off their rockers! This is short and sweet tonight. Friday is so calling my name!!! A BIG TGI {Almost....almost...almost...}F!!!!!!!! P.S. If something doesn't make sense or you see a trillion spelling errors...I am so blaming it ON THE KIDS!!!!! Ha!
We were back to business in room 102 and we were all about measurement! Non-standard measurement that is. Here are a few of the fun activities we did this week: Measure Me! The kids were giggling like crazy as they made estimates about each part of their body and then measured how long their body […]

About this ResourceThis resource is a unique way to get your students warmed up in the morning. The math is aligned to 2nd grade Common Core Standards and meant to be a review. If you teach 3rd grade, this might also work for you depending on your students’ needs. (We do have a 3rd grade version!)This set contains 5 weeks of leprechaun, St. Patrick's Day and a few other - themed morning work for the month of March. The morning work is focused on Math with a sprinkle of Science, a pinch of grammar, and a dash of Daily/Weekly Updates to keep your students engaged continuously reviewing math skills. Additionally, the daily and weekly updates open doors for conversations to help you and your students get to know one another. You can check out the 3rd grade set to get a feel for the upcoming months. Each week follows the same routine. The focus for each day was created based on fundamental needs we noticed in our classrooms of 3rd and 4th Graders: Place Value, Number Sense, and Fractions. While these are not the only areas addressed, they are the main focus. This has worked so well in our 3rd and 4th grade classrooms that we have branched out into other grade levels. Each week follows the same routine and structure.*Mathematician Monday - Problems are centered around 1st grade math review and problems leading up to the understanding of more complex problems, especially Multiplication & Division. In the 3rd-5th Grade morning work, it is called Multiplication Monday. *Base Ten Tuesday - All about the Base of our Number System. These problems are centered around our number system and place value. *Wordless Wednesday - No Word Problems! Students have 3 problems without words. *Throwback Thursday - Review Day! Other days may offer a review problem, but Thursdays have problems that may come from 1st grade or the beginning of the year. I also added problems from other standards such as Measurement, Data, Geometry, and Number Patterns.*Fun Friday - Nothing says Fun Friday like Math! There is always a need to review. By keeping it short and sweet and including a fun personal question, this may help build your students’ confidence with different math skills while also keeping it fresh. The problems may also lead up to the understanding of Fractions in 3rd grade.I created this resource in my 3rd grade classroom because I saw a need to continuously review these key areas. By following this same structure each week, students know what to expect while they are also building their confidence in these essential math areas. I have also found several other benefits from this morning work routine: *Routine! - My students knew exactly what to do when they come in the classroom.*Short & Sweet - There are only a few problems so it shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes. This will also let you know if students are still having difficulty with a certain skill.*Fewer Copies - Only one sheet of paper for the whole week! (Copy front and back)*A Weekly Grade - My students know this and do not want to do the work for homework or have a poor grade. This helped get them started right away in the morning. I also go over the problems each morning and allowed students to fix their work before turning it in. In my opinion, this is beneficial because it keeps the students engaged as we go over it, ESPECIALLY if they had difficulty with it. This was also beneficial for students because if they paid attention and “added on to their thinking,” they will earn a good grade that will be added weekly. For students that already struggle, this is confidence building and motivating. 🛑 Are you a member of the TLL Membership? These materials are already included.
