Round and Round! Antique Handmade Hand sewn 1930-40’s Patchwork Quilt Top. I just love Antique quilt tops and have collected them for over 30 years but there comes a time to share with others and I am thinning out the herd as they say. This beauty measures approx. 76” x 83” and has multiple fabrics from what looks like the 1930/40’s era possible some Feed sack cloth, recycled clothing and completely hand stitched. I believe the pattern is the 8 pointed star or a variation of that. This top is in good usable condition but does have a few small holes, spots or stains as shown in photos and expected with age, storage, etc. but this does not affect the beauty of this top. This piece has been hand laundered, lightly starched and ready to complete or display as is. This is the top only not a completed quilt.

A beautiful old basket quilt with amazing quilting details, all done by hand! I believe it is from the 1930s. Hand-quilted quilts are getting harder and harder to find! DIMENSIONS: 68" x 84" – it is shown on a twin bed CONDITION: GOOD vintage condition considering its age. There is one block that is very faded in a light gray. I have a feeling they used whatever fabric they had on hand to make this quilt. Please remember that all of the items are VINTAGE, meaning they are OLD and not new. They have been lovingly used in a previous life and may show slight wear from normal use. I strive very hard to assure the high-quality of the products I purchase and to fully disclose any significant flaws. BUT every vintage item has some sort of flaw and sometimes those flaws add to the beauty of the piece. Imagine the stories they would tell if only they could talk! I am done with this quilt top. DONE! Over three months in the making, and I'm so thrilled to be done with it. Not only because I love it, but because it was a challenge. Piecing the blocks wasn't terribly difficult and, in pieces, the applique itself wasn't either. However, there are a lot of applique pieces and getting them on was so time consuming. At first, I wasn't sure if I should attach the borders and then add the applique or add the applique to the border and THEN attach the borders. I'm glad I did the applique first. It's quite a chore cajoling a queen-sized quilt around the sewing table. The corner flowers on the border had to go on last after the borders were attached. Honestly, I was about 60 seconds from throwing things at one point. I'm pretty even tempered, but the moving all the fabric around - and, at one point, getting a grease spot from sewing machine lubricant on the white fabric (gone now, thank goodness) - was frustrating. By the end of it, I had to trim up the outer border because it had frayed quite a bit after being moved around so much. Mitered borders aren't my favorite and they're far from perfect, but I'm mostly happy with the outcome. Next, she gets quilted. I can't wait for this one to be done! It's the first, and probably last, queen-sized quilt I'll finish. Famous last words... The quilt is 83" x 105" so it's too big to get a flat shot of the whole quilt in my small house. Sure, squares are interesting and easy. So, why not? If you are considering making a quilt, any one of these would be a great way to begin. How, you ask? 1. Start with a square of fabric and sew it to another square. Keep adding squares to form a row until you are satisfied that the row is long enough. Thirty inches is a good start, but you can certainly make it any length you want. 2. Make several rows. If you have a square quilt in mind (equal length and width) count the squares in the first row and make that many rows. 3. Now you're ready to begin stitching the rows together. Sew two rows together matching up the squares as you go. 4. Keep going till all the rows are in place. Really, it's that simple. One of the great reasons to use simple squares is that you can use a different fabric for each square or just a few fabrics for the entire quilt. Thanks for stopping by. Please say hello. The Split Rail Fence blocks set on-point led to the precise piecing that lends a crispness to the design. Straight-line quilting in the center of the quilt mirrors the block lines. It is a cutter quilt but in good condition. Contains lots of fabrics for appliqués, or upcycling jeans. See pictures. The fabrics are a charming array of designs. All hand pieced and hand quilted. It is the Grandmother’s Flower Garden. There are 8 whole patterns and 3 half patterns. It has definitely been well taken care of. No stains. I love working with these pieces for old fashioned journals, framing and pillows. It has been laundered and comes from a smoke free home. I would guess that it was made in the 1930s from the fabrics. Threadneedle Street I named this free pattern Threadneedle Street for for an ancient London road, home to the tailors' guild for centuries. It's in the financial district today. You have a roll of 2-1/2" strips A Moda JellyRoll of Morris Earthly Paradise: Cut the strips into parallelograms by cutting them with a 60 degree ruler every 7-1/2". Flip half of them. Combine them with a Jelly Roll of Moda Bella Solids, say Snow White. Junior Jelly Roll of Snow Cut them the same way Alternate till you run out of fabric. My inspiration A snapshot of a 1930s quilt seen at the FFA & Ag Museum in Iowa. I do not believe I have ever noticed this pattern before. At first I thought it was a braid design. A diagram for a braid pattern with 90 degree angles. It's sort of like a braid but the angles have to be 60 degrees---not 90 degrees. A tessellation---and perfect for JellyRolls. UPDATE: Astute commenters noted how hard this would be to sew---it's all set-in seams, which is probably why the pattern is rarely seen. How could it be modified to make it possible to do it with straight seam on a machine? Add seams. Well you could make it all diamonds. Or some diamonds. But I think it was a hand-sewing project.

My 1930's Quilt -- Made from Antique Quilt Blocks I call this the 1930's quilt. I worked on this off and on for about 5 years -- from around 1995 - 2000. I purchased all these blocks already sewn from an antiques shop in Michigan. I paid $20 for 48 blocks, all made with fabrics from the 1930's. My mother and sister were with me when I bought them and didn't seem to understand why I wanted them. I remember sitting in the backseat counting them up and deciding right then and there to make a quilt that was 6 x 8 rows -- roughly the size of a twin-size bed quilt. This is also one of the first quilts that I know of where I made a binding. I folded the backing fabric over to the front and sewed it down by hand. This method is sometimes used, although it is not usually the preferred method. So, here you can see that each block is actually made up of 8 half-square triangles, as they are known to us quilters. The quilt maker most likely cut the triangles, then sewed the triangles together into squares, then sewed four of these squares together, making one block. The piecing on this quilt is all done by machine -- both the unknown quilter and my addition of the sashing (the blue fabric). The blue sashing fabric that I used was, again, more of my great-grandmother's leftovers. I had a couple of yards of that lying around and thought it would work well with the '30s fabrics. If you look closely, you can see in this picture how the blue fabric is actually textured. You can also notice some of the detail in the other fabrics and the variety of colors, patterns, and scale that were used. I imagine the quilt maker was just using up scraps from her own stash. In this close-up now you can really see the texture I was talking about in that blue fabric. You can also see this detail of the quilting I did in the outer row of the sashing. My original intent was to do this vine and leaf quilting in ALL of the sashing. Well, as you can probably guess, after five years of working on this thing by the time I got this close to finishing, I just decided to forget that and do only the outer sashing instead! In case you are wondering, I used a stencil to trace the design on with a water-soluable fabric marker. Here is the quilt from the back. I used a light pink fabric that I purchased (not a sheet! Haha!). You can see now why I was working on this quilt for five years....all the hand quilting that I did took a long time! This was my largest undertaking of "real" hand quilting up to this point. I did outline quilting around every other triangle, giving it this pinwheel affect. Then I did a flower in each of the other triangles. I used a stencil for the flowers. Here's a close-up of one block. Another close-up of my quilting, as seen from the back. Now, here you can REALLY see how my quilting improved over the five years I worked on this. Remember, I would work on this off-and-on between other projects that I did. If you look at the line of diagonal stitching in this photo and compare the size of the stitches to the ones in the flower, you can see what I mean. I quilted all of the triangles first. Then I went back and quilted all of the flowers. I almost have to laugh when I look at how large, crooked, and uneven those stitches around the triangles are! Here's another example! Boy, did I improve over those five years! Whenever I look at this quilt, I think about how it is now a permanent record of my progress during that time.
