The "toleware" tray has been decorated, in a highly artistic way, with flowers, leaves, and arabesques using gold paint on a black background. “Toleware" is a painted and varnished tin household item made to imitate the imported Chinese lacquer items that were popular in Britain in the 18th century. The painting process was developed in the 18th century by Thomas Allgood in Pontypool in Wales, an important coal mining location. The paint was created with asphalt, a by-product of coal, mixed with shellac, and the mixture was applied to domestic objects made of the iron plate; different layers were distributed, each of which was brought to a high temperature so that the finished objects were extremely resistant and never rust. This process was known as Japanning because it resembled the lacquer on Chinese trays, soon spread throughout Europe, especially in France, where the decorations were more elaborate and precious. 18th c. Italian embroidered velvet bench with gilt polychrome legs and iron stretchers. In original condition. Worn velvet, but embroidery is in very good condition for its's age. Oval brass tacks are all present. Metallic thread in fringe and throughout. Depicted are a cardinal's hat, angels and the virgin and child. In original condition with no structural issues. Wear is most evident on the seat on which the velvet has worn away in areas. There is also some staining on seat and small ash burn. Nonetheless, it is striking!

DIEN, Charles, Paris, 1844 A fine and rare 10-inch diameter celestial globe CH. DIEN , overall the globe is readable with all of its decorative value preserved. (1st quarter 19th century). This globe was published in the 1840's, it is part of the last lineage of the famous French map maker Delamarche of the 18th century , globe making was not just a luxury item but was becoming a household item for the upper middle cast. It is engraved from a cooper or metal plate .Charles Dien was first an engraver for Delamarche where he was renowned for the sophisticated engravings he designed for the many books produced by his father's publishing house Delamarche. At a later date he became an astronomer and cosmographer, published planetariums, terrestrial and celestial globes but also several astronomical atlases. Charles Dien, made globes, mainly between 1840 and 1850 .Texas is still an independent republic as seem with the fading red watercolor lining its border . H. 21 D. 10 inches ,good condition , some light touch up , all map readable with some oxidation of the paper , some dark spot. This late 18th century document describes herbal prescriptions to relieve complaints of "Gravel" and "Stone." One of the remedies called for horsemint, a popular antiseptic herb, and red onions. The term "gravel" was used to describe a calcium build up in the urinary tract, also known as urinary tract stones, where sand-like deposits caused blockage. The term "stone" refered to kidney stones. The weed called for in the gravel recipe is likely smartweed, a common ingredient in traditional homeopathic remedies, used to combat infections.
