Circa 1830s-1840s, a little treasure of a children's book, with a story told in verse, accompanied by large hand-colored illustrations. Published in JQ Preble, New York. Measures 7"x4.5". 8 pages. Hand stitched spine. Very well loved, with lots of age and wear throughout. The covers have some damage. The interior pages have some page edge wear, and some overall paper age. A quite regal Victorian antique crinoline evening dress / ballgown, dating to the 1840s / 1850s ( the bodice shows some signs of a re model, so perhaps worn over several decades, see condition report below ) ( maybe even late 1830s ?? ) Two pieces , in a rich deep navy silk velvet (quite rare to find a velvet gown for this period) The bodice is fitted and boned, fastening with hooks in the back, the hem forming a shallow point at the front, a longer point at the back . Wide round neck edged with red silk ribbon ruffle and black lace. Short net sleeves, beautifully decorated with crossing red silk bands and silk flower buds ( or berries ? ) The skirt forms a narrow dome, 9 Shown over r a hoop, not included ) gathered with cartridge pleats in to the waist all around, with a short train. Hand sewn. CONDITIONS The bodice looks like it's been altered at the side seams to make it smaller, then re lined ( the front of the bodice has a hem facing, and the back of the armholes have a binding , the lining in the back hides the boning ) The angle of the hem line makes a quite abrupt curve that doesn't look original ( having said that, it might just be that the bodice has been re lined - the skirt and bodice measurements match, and the skirt shows no obvious signs of alteration ? ) Some wear and small marks, but mostly good. The silk ribbon at the neck is possibly faded, and a bit dry with shattering in places, but again mostly good. Some loose stitching at the bottom of the side seams. One bone missing. A set of petticoats which creats truly Biedermeier or Romanticism silhouette of 1820s - 1830s. Perfectly needed for 'Wives and Daughters' or 'Jane Eyre' look! The set consists of two skirts. The first one is 1820s-1840s corded petticoat which gives a form to the dress. Made of cotton, has one inch wide girdle and is supported by 44 yards of cord inserted inside the skirt. The second petticoat is made of high quality smooth face cotton satin fabric and is closed on a narrow girdle with a drawstring. It has two rows of wide flounces with batiste frill on each row. The first generation of Oregon settlers were mostly French Canadian men from the fur trade. In the 1830s, the men typically married Native American women. Their children -- an entire generation -- were mixed race, or in French, Métis. After the Americanization of Oregon in the 1840s, most of the Indian wives and their children were forced to move to the Grand Ronde reservation. Unlike Métis boys who were typically not accepted into Oregon society, educated Métis girls who downplayed their native heritage had a chance at integrating. However, their Indian heritage was usually ignored by their new families and by generations of descendents. This family portrait alludes to the struggle the Métis daughters may have felt. The connection to our parents is genetic as well as deeply emotional. Undoubtedly the integration buried or even erased deeply loved cultural traditions as well as spiritual beliefs. But for me it is at least heartening to think that things have come full circle as today’s descendants seek out where they came from and who they are and celebrate their full heritage once again.
