18-inch Doll Winter Set (Fleece Hat & Poncho) This outfit was made to fit dolls such as the American Girl Doll. The pattern was designed for the children's sewing classes that I teach. It's another easy peezy favorite of theirs. Fleece Hat Tutorial Supply List Fleece Chalk Wheel Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw your pattern on Sewing supplies Seam Allowance = 1/2 inch Step 1 - Make The Pattern Draw an 8 x 14 inch rectangle on a piece of paper and cut it out Label the pattern “fleece hat cut 1” Step 2 – Cut the Fabric Pin the pattern on the fleece making sure the long side of the rectangle is placed in the direction that the fleece stretches so it will stretch around the doll's head later. Cut out your fabric. Cut a scrap of fleece that is 1/2 x 7 inches. Step 3 - Sew the Hem Turn up one long edge 1-inch and pin. Set your machine for a zigzag stitch and sew along the pinned edge. Step 4 - Sew Side Seam Fold the hat in half with pretty sides touching. Make the edge even and pin. Set your machine back to straight stitch. Sew the side seam using a 1/2 inch seam. Step 4 - Make the Fringe Use a chalk wheel to mark a line 2 inches down from the top of the hat. Cut fringe strips approx. 1/2 inch wide from the end of the fabric to the chalk line you made. Turn hat pretty side out and center the seam facing you. Gather up the fringe and tie the 1/2 inch fleece strip around the hat in a knot. Trim the tie to match the length of your fringe. Enjoy your hat! Fleece Poncho Tutorial Supply List Fleece Chalk Wheel 2 Buttons Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw your pattern on Sewing supplies Step 1 - Make The Pattern Draw a 15 x 15 inch square on a piece of paper. Label the pattern "fleece poncho cut 1" Step 2 - Cut the Fabric Pin the pattern to the fleece and cut it out. Step 3 - Make the Neck Opening One the back of the fabric use your chalk wheel to draw an X from corner to corner. Measure 2 inches from the center of the X and make a mark. Do this on three edges of the X. It will look like a T shape in the center of the poncho. Carefully cut along the chalk lines between the 3 dots your made. This will cut out a T shape in the center of your poncho. Step 4 - Make the Collar Fold the flaps you just cut down to the front of the poncho and pin forming a collar. Sew a button to each flap. Step 5 - Fringe the Poncho Use the chalk wheel and a large ruler to draw a line 1 1/2 inches from all sides of the poncho. Cut the square off each corner along the chalk line. Carefully cut 1/2 wide fringe around the poncho from the edge to the chalk line you made. Enjoy your poncho! © 2011 Carol Steely All rights reserved http://funthreads.blogspot.com/
