Because I volunteer a few days each month as a Mexican genealogical consultant at the Los Angeles Family History Center, many people have asked me for assistance in tracing their indigenous roots in Mexico. For three hundred years, Mexico was blessed with an exceptional record-keeping system. For the most part, Spanish padres in the small [...]

Hello! This week's theme on Simon Says Stamp and Show Challenge blog is to do a "men only" project. Manly themes are often difficult in this craft since so many of the papers and embellishments are geared towards more feminine styles.... But I was going through some old family albums and found an old picture of my Dad and two uncles when they were very young (Dad is on right) and used it as inspiration for a hand-made mini book, celebrating "brothers". The covers are cut from a cardboard box, painted with distress crackle paint and edged with tissue tape. The chipboard frames are from Maya Road. Added some Idea-ology sprocket gears, game spinner, and alpha part letters, and some fabulous metal corner that Hels gave to me when I went to visit her last year. Inside, the pages are made from Kraft Resist paper and various colors of distress stains. To each page, I added a picture from Tim Holtz' Lost and Found paper stack, a chipboard frame from Maya Road, which I colored with distress stains and accented with Inka Gold. I stained some vintage lace with brushed corduroy distress stain, and added a philosophy tag and some bark ribbon I found in a local craft store. Then I tried to think of all the different things that brothers can mean to each other, and stamped each idea out with some mini alphabet stamps I've had for SO long I can't even remember where I got them... they were one of the first sets of stamps I ever bought! They are similar to THESE by Hero Arts. I added each word to the page, and then distressed them just a little bit with antique linen distress ink. Finally... I bound the book together using The Cinch with 1" binding rings. I hope you enjoyed this mini book... remember to join in the "manly" theme this week - you could win a $50 shopping spree with Simon Says Stamp! Have a great week! ~ ellen.
This is the template I have designed to create my "Crash" kirigami sculpture. Introducing a little bit more distortion and turbulence. Looking at the completed model, you really get the sense that it's moving, flowing, rushing. This is not an assembled piece, rather it provides you with the pattern to make it yourself. I spend a lot of time and care in designing these; they are accurate to the 10th of a millimeter. To use it, I print it out (color or b&w works fine; I use a b&w laser printer), attach one edge gently to a piece of card using lo-tak tape or glue stick, then score with an embossing point, cut with a scalpel, and fold with my fingers. Please note that this is a challenging model to construct. If you are a beginner, it might be worth starting with a simpler design and working toward this one. All templates are A4 pdf files. I prefer the metric system. But they work just fine on letter paper too. If you want native letter-sized templates, let me know and I'll make some for you. Each one comes with a photo of the finished goal, to help you work, as well as some general tips and then the template itself. Any questions, please feel free; I'm a genuine enthusiast and don't mind talking about it :) Happy cutting, and be careful with those blades!

Everyone can use a pick-me-up when they're losing confidence—these motivational quotes might help you take that risk or make that leap.
This is the template I have designed to create my "Xamrok" kirigami sculpture, which is available fully assembled as a separate Etsy item. If you're interested in the final product and not just the pattern, I sell these separately; but if you want to get hands-on and DIY, this is the item for you. This template was designed in A4 format: I prefer the metric system. But they work just fine on letter paper too. Both A4- and letter-formatted templates are available as part of this download. Each one comes with a photo of the finished goal, to help you work, as well as some general tips and then the template itself. Any questions, please feel free; I'm a genuine enthusiast and don't mind talking about it :) Happy cutting, and be careful with those blades!
