Celebrate the 100th Day of School with these engaging fine motor activities for kids! Super simple ideas, like a 100 punches booklet and 100 sticker mat!
We have been getting ready for the 100th day of school in our classroom. We have been counting by 10s, by 5s, and by 1s to 100. We have been learning what 100 looks like. We have been exploring 100 in many ways... A yummy activity to practice counting to 100 by tens. If you would like to do this activity with your class, you can find it at Teachers Pay Teachers. Just click on the link or image below: Count-by-10-ice-cream-fun A class quilt to practice counting to 100 by fives. The kids were so excited about this when they came to school and it was all put together and up in the room. They spontaneously broke out into a chant counting. It was wonderful! This activity really helped solidify the concept that ten groups of ten make 100 for my little students. I got this idea from a pin that originally came from For the Love of Kindergarten http://kindergartenfreckleteacher.blogspot.com/2012/02/this-week-in-pictures-and-links-2-62-10.html She has some other fun ideas for 100 and lots of other cool stuff going on in her class last February. This was my take on the paint dots idea. Thanks Cindy! If you would like to get the printable shown in the photo above along with all sorts of other goodies for your class, you can get it here: Print and Go! 100 Days Math and Literacy (NO PREP). You can also do the dot painting this way too. It's fun to make 100 gumballs. This sheet is also in my Print and Go! 100 Days Math and Literacy (NO PREP) . All you have to do is make copies, put out the paint, and you're done! Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! We did the 100s chart puzzles a few days before the actual 100th day. I made them in several colors so that the kids could keep track of their pieces easier. And so that our bulletin board will be more colorful. Ha ha! This is one of the activities the kids did independently on the 100th day. Small groups worked together collaboratively to build a structure with 100 blocks. Looks Great! Another activity that kids had to do independently and collaboratively was to find the 100 hearts hidden around the classroom. They found all but three and worked together to put them in order. They needed 71, 84, and 86. They were hidden in the felt board area in the bag with the felt shapes. Tricky! The hearts are tipped because they were too pointy to stand straight in the pocket chart. Speaking of pocket charts, in this photo, mine sure looks old. Maybe it is time for a new one... We also had a center for the kids to make a bag with 100 snacks. Some teachers call this activity a trail mix. I call it snacks. We do a very simple version of it. I put each of the ten snacks out on a table. Students each have a baggie with their name written on it. They take turns going to each of the snacks and counting out 10 into the baggie. The kiddos were so excited to eat it at recess. Yippee! Each child got to make a special 100s day hat with 100 stickers on it. They look so cute wearing the hats in the classroom. Fun! The most challenging activity of our 100th day was writing about what you would do if you had $100. Most of my students this year decided to spend it. One or two decided to save it. One little boy said he would give it to his family. I thought that was sooooo sweet! Here are a couple of interesting ones: "I would buy a peecok." "I would bi a hol oshin!" I love the kids' drawing and writing! So cute. This prompt is so fun to see what their ideas are about. I do this every year for the 100th day. UPDATE JANUARY 2015: This year, I finally made the time to create all my favorite activities for the 100th day in a time saving, black and white ink saving, Print and Go! pack. It’s nearly the middle of January already and around here, that means that it’s almost the 100th day of school! Hi, everyone! Friday marked the 100th day of school for us, and it seems impossible to believe that we have already been in school 100 days. I just love seeing the children dressed as 100-year old grandmas and grandpas around our school--absolutely adorable! My favorite costume of the day was a little girl decked out in pearls and a cardigan wearing a white wig decorated with pink sponge rollers--precious! Some of my favorite 100th day activities to enjoy with my students include Super Science Experiments with Pennies and drawing 100-year old self portraits! If you're looking for more great enrichment activities for the 100th day, I would love for you to preview my 100th Day Resource Pack at the link below! Happy 100th day to you and your little ones!!! Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.

After they share you can pin them to a bulletin board for a super fun display.
Do you use crowns or headbands in your classroom? My oldest son is 4 and he loves wearing crowns. I wanted to share these crowns with you that are super easy to prep and fun for the 100th day. There are 3 different ways this activity can be completed. Each hat says "100 Days Smarter". First up is a free style crown. This crown can be colored or decorated anyway the student chooses. Students can color the circles, use bingo markers, paint with Q-tips or use stickers. Each of these methods help strengthen fine motor skills at the same time. Next, there is a color by shape activity included. This activity helps students review 2d shapes and color words. Lastly, there is a color by code key included in which students give themselves a checkmark after coloring 10 of each color: blue, pink, red, etc. until they have completed all of the colors listed. I love these crowns because not only are they fun for the 100th day, but they also practice fine motor skills, color words and shapes. You can find them in my store here.

Our theme last week was "Construction" and we focused on the letter P, number 13 and color yellow. We read this week: Curious George Makes Pancakes by Margret and HA Rey The 100th Day of School by Angela Shelf Medearis If you Give a Pig and Pancake by Laura Numeroff Curious George and the Puppies by Margret and HA Rey My First Chinese New Year by Karen Katz We finished the month of January this week (CAN'T BELIEVE IT!) so we got to compare this year's weather and last years! Our question of the week was "What would you like 100 of?" Some of these answers were great! For our theme of the week, we did talk some about construction. Other thank some discussions about what construction is, and building with blocks, we focused more on two very special days that happened this week. I just have to share the sensory table from a younger classroom. How cute! First we had our 100th day of school! My kids were fascinated by this and kept counting to 100 all day. We used construction paper, paper plates and dot paint to make 100 gumballs! In small groups we counted 10 dots for each color of paint to get to 100. The Lunar New Year also fell this week. I bought this place mat from Pottery Barn Kids that shows the different animals. On the back I wrote little blurbs about what each animal stands for, years, and who they do/do not get along with. The kids loved finding out what animal year that they were born in. We also colored pictures and made paper fans to celebrate with. This kids really put a lot of effort into their pictures, which I loved! We talked about the color yellow, and we sang "Yellow Sun" to the tune of "Row your boat" "Bright sun shining down, Shining on the ground. What a lovely face you have, Yellow, big and round." I got it from here! When we focus on a color I love to do "color hunts" in our classroom. Each child takes a turn to walk around the classroom and bring back something that they found that is yellow. The tricky thing is that they have to bring different things, no duplicates allowed! Here is what we found for the color yellow. When we worked on our number activities, we practiced writing the number and word for the number 13. I made these worksheets that reinforces the one to one concept. The kids practice writing the number and have to color a square for each picture that they see. For our letter activities, we used our handwriting sheet for the letter Pp from this book. We did this worksheet that helps work on letter recognition that I got from this book. The students wrote in their journals for the letter. We turned a P into a Pig! This book is great, although this week I made up my own. I found this recipe for playdoh. The kids had a lot of fun playing with it! The kids made a little booklet calls Panda's Pillows that came from a Mailbox book: Letter of the Week. We made a retelling of the story "If You Give a Pig A Pancake" with the kids kids each illustrating a page. I love making little class books, the kids love making them too and their parents love to read them. I usually hang them up next to our Car Talk so the parents can flip through them at pickup. I made 3 pizzas out of paper plates and cut them into halves, quarters and eighths. The kids had a lot of fun putting them together and playing with the slices. Playing hot potato was super fun as well. For our alphabet wall we made puppies! Here are the words we came up with this week! Look at this adorable cupcake from one of the other classrooms! Up next week: "Ground Hogs and Shadows" and a focus on the letter Qq, number 14 and color gray.
