For the first 100 days of school, we uncover one apple from our growing number line. The children LOVE this – they get so excited every day! One of my kinder buddies uses this in her classroom and I knew I had to have the same one (when I saw it almost 8 years ago!) (<3 U LB!) EXCITEMENT when we added the 100 to our 100 grid! (LOVE the exclamation point at the end!) The children are begging me for another 100s chart to keep adding the days in school on!! #happyteacher! In the past, I’ve always used colored strips of construction paper on our 100th day hats. This year, I was running short of time and didn’t get them prepped fast enough. SO….I just cut strips of white paper and threw them on really quickly with masking tape. I knew they HAD to be decorated, and since we’ve been talking about number combinations to 10 so much, I decided we would play a little game. I quickly (and I mean quickly – I had the last 5 minutes of my planning time to prep it!) pulled out playing cards A-10, and my stash of dobbers. I have enough dobbers now so that each table has about 4 each and we can exchange. The children chose a card from the table (the ace equals 1), dobbed the number, changed colors and dobbed the remaining dots to make ten. Make sense? The children did great, and made for some fun, colorful hats! (Sorry I forgot to take a pic of the finished product!) Kim Adsit has a MUCH cuter version in her 100th day pack. The children had a great time making their 100th day collections for our display. My bulletin boards were all full with winter stuff so I had to punt and just hang them on my classroom door! The children loved looking at all of the different 100 collections! The children had a blast searching around the room and pretending to be 100th day detectives! They loved discovering the 100 on their grids! And of course, or 100th day snack is ALWAYS a hit! and dobbing to 100! (Can you tell I love dobbers!!?) And we finally finished our Zero the Hero book! This was super exciting for the kids since we have been working on it every 10 days. They were so excited to bring it home to show their families! We made text to self connections and wrote about what worries us! When my cat ran away but he came back. I am worried about someone getting hurt. *sigh. so. sweet* I am SO EXCITED about this next project! Julie Lee makes these amazing 100th day collages, and I knew I wanted to do it this year. I wanted 5 different activities so each table group could have their own. We started out counting out 10 sets of 10 on our giant ten frames. Once we checked and double checked, we got out the glue bottles, and glued all of our pieces on. 100 pizza toppings! 100 snowflakes in a snow globe! 100 sprinkles on our cookie! 100 gumballs in our gumball machine! and in honor of our apple number line, 100 apples on the apple tree! Last week, we celebrated being 100 days smarter! It was the 100th day of school, which is so hard to believe that the year is more than halfway over! After our reading block was over, we did all things 100! We always make these sweet little ladies and gentlemen! {I am not even sure whose original these idea these were, since they're everywhere now!} This is one of the funniest things we do all year! I just love reading what they come up with! Cara Carroll has the cutest 100th Day Freebie, so we used those stations for our math block. They were super easy to prep! We didn't have time to do all of them, so I adapted it down to five stations. I have to say that even second graders had a blast with those stations! They giggled and laughed, and they didn't want to stop playing! These were a couple of the books we read. We also read 100 Snowmen, which was super cute! I rotated these posters around to each table. I gave each table 5 minutes to add as many things as they could think of. We did 100 things I've learned, 100 acts of kindness, 100 math problems, and 100 words I know. I thought I would share my visual lesson plans for the week. We will be learning all about penguins and place value. I posted about our 100th day of school and some fun activities we did for the 100th day in this post, so you can check out that post if you need more ideas! The last fun activity we did on the 100th day of school was a 100th day snack. I had some questions about how I manage the 100th day snack, because it all seems overwhelming, so I wanted to let you know: IT'S NOT THAT BAD! I've been doing it for years with both Kindergarten and first graders, and I've never had any problems with it. If you can get parents to donate items, you'd be even better off. The key is organization. I have my students working on another activity while we do their snack bags. I've had graphing activities, 100th day books, etc... that the students can do independently while I pull a few students at a time to my table. I usually only pull 2-3 in Kindergarten, because they need a little more supervision. I try to pull a few independent students so that I can help the ones who need a little bit more help. We created these placemats with 10 colored circles glued to a piece of black paper and laminated. The students were instructed to put 10 of each food item in one of those circles. This works best in Kindergarten because the students can see how many of each item they've counted. In first grade, I just allowed them to put the items in their baggie. We had quite a variety of items to make their snack. The students take 10 of each item and place it on their mat. Last year, I placed the items on a plate, but I prefer bowls or plastic containers because they take up less space. Every year I struggle with which items to use in my 100th day Trail Mix, so I created a list of different items that I can choose from. I try to choose a variety of options- some candy, some cereal, some snack foods, and some baking goods. Once the students had 10 of each item in their circles, I checked them and put them into a baggie with their name on it. Then they got to take their snack home! I love the counting mats because I can easily see how many more items each child needs to count out, and they can be picked up easily and the items can just be dumped into their baggies. Another way I control the chaos is by telling the students that I will only choose students who are working hard and being quiet. If I notice a child is out of their seat or not working, then I skip over them- and they know I mean business! :-) So that's how I manage the 100th day snack! The kids are always so excited about making their own snack, and they can't wait to eat it when they get home. If I have extra items left (and I usually do!), I throw it all in a bowl or bag, mix it up, and give them a handful to taste at school. Have a Happy 100th Day of School!

Wow! What a fun day... and as usual, I planned WAAAY too much!! We were so busy! We read 100th Day books, read 100th Day poetry, and did 100th Day math centers and literacy activities. We completed 100 exercises throughout the day and attempted to be silent for 100 seconds on the carpet (that is until we all ended up laughing and giggling... first grade laughter is so contagious!) Here is a look at some of our 100th Day of School Fun!! For a copy of our 100th Day packet, visit my TPT store! This is my back table before the day started. We really did not need very many materials to enjoy our 100th day! We started our day by coloring a picture with 100 little pictures inside it. Students had to color the objects based on a code. They counted each object and wrote an addition number model that equaled 100. After finishing their counting, we cut out our 100s and made them into a 100s day crown! In first grade, we practice word families almost every day. One of the students' challenges today was to write 100 word family words with a partner! I was impressed with how they FLEW through this activity. I guess all of our practice has been paying off! On to math... students completed several math centers all to do with the number, 100. Students rolled a dice 100 times and recorded their results. They flipped a coin 100 times and predicted the outcome. We solved 100 addition problems. We colored a hundreds chart according to a fun set of directions. These girls are recording their coin flips! The favorite math center of the day was sorting a bag of 100 pattern blocks and counting how many of each block were in the bag. This afternoon, students wrote about what they thought the world would be like 100 years from now. They seemed to really think that people would be living in houses made out of ice (which makes sense since we have had 4 days off of school this winter due to below zero temperatures.....) HA! And finally, our special 100th Day snack with 100 TREATS! Students got 10 of the following treats to organize in 10s frames. Raisins, Gummy Bears, Cheerios, Kix, Chocolate Chips, Goldfish, M&Ms, Mini Marshmellows, Chex, and Butterscotch!!! YUM! Needless to say, it was a fun-filled day of learning. What a great way to celebrate our accomplishments this year! And the best part is, we have so much more learning to do (which is starting to stress me out... I hope I'm not the only one!) And this teacher is exhausted... on to watching the Olympics and probably falling asleep by 8:00, oops! :)
