I started a little preschool group with a few other moms (and their kids, of course) in my neighborhood, and so far it's been really great! It's pretty laid back, and we're focused more on building social skills, learning to follow routines, hands-on play and activities, and that sort of thing than a rigid curriculum. We are following my "letter a day" outline (which I'll post soon!) but that's more about having fun themes to follow, and starting to build letter recognition. We do lots of fun games, read stories, hands-on activities, and just let the kids play. Anyway, more on that another day! But on the days we don't have our preschool group, I've been trying to work on reading with Jack. He knows all his letters, and he loves when I read to him, so we're trying to read lots and start to work on word recognition. We're a long way away from him actually reading, but the more we read, the better, for so many reasons! So I made this chart for him to set some reading goals and start keeping track of how much reading we're doing. Charts really work for motivating him. I think it's the visual reminder along with the immediate reward of putting a sticker on the chart, which reminds him of his long-term reward/goal. Whatever it is, they work for us - for potty training, behavior goals, etc. Now we just have to decide what the reward will be when we reach the goal! I remember my mom reading to me and my sisters when we were little, which is what started my love affair with reading. She read to us all the time, and encouraged us to read as well - we even set reading goals! My love of reading is what to led to my (albeit brief) career as an English teacher before deciding to take a break to stay home with my boys. Can you blame me for wanting to turn my kids into little bookworms too? I just re-read this post. It's rather rambling and random, but I guess that's just indicative of my life right now. Enjoy!
We've had 34 days of school so far. It's amazing to think how much the kids have learned and grown in such a short amount of time. (Me, too!) Each year, I count the days by bundling craft sticks in a place value pouch. Then I saw this on Pinterest: (It was just a picture, no link. Not sure who gets credit.) Can I say how much I LOVE counting the days on Ten Frames? LOVE! I thought about making one but my room is so tiny, I don't have the space. So, I came up with a compromise: It's simple. It's small at 8.5x11. It's perfect for my room. Maybe yours? Enjoy!

Our theme last week was "Construction" and we focused on the letter P, number 13 and color yellow. We read this week: Curious George Makes Pancakes by Margret and HA Rey The 100th Day of School by Angela Shelf Medearis If you Give a Pig and Pancake by Laura Numeroff Curious George and the Puppies by Margret and HA Rey My First Chinese New Year by Karen Katz We finished the month of January this week (CAN'T BELIEVE IT!) so we got to compare this year's weather and last years! Our question of the week was "What would you like 100 of?" Some of these answers were great! For our theme of the week, we did talk some about construction. Other thank some discussions about what construction is, and building with blocks, we focused more on two very special days that happened this week. I just have to share the sensory table from a younger classroom. How cute! First we had our 100th day of school! My kids were fascinated by this and kept counting to 100 all day. We used construction paper, paper plates and dot paint to make 100 gumballs! In small groups we counted 10 dots for each color of paint to get to 100. The Lunar New Year also fell this week. I bought this place mat from Pottery Barn Kids that shows the different animals. On the back I wrote little blurbs about what each animal stands for, years, and who they do/do not get along with. The kids loved finding out what animal year that they were born in. We also colored pictures and made paper fans to celebrate with. This kids really put a lot of effort into their pictures, which I loved! We talked about the color yellow, and we sang "Yellow Sun" to the tune of "Row your boat" "Bright sun shining down, Shining on the ground. What a lovely face you have, Yellow, big and round." I got it from here! When we focus on a color I love to do "color hunts" in our classroom. Each child takes a turn to walk around the classroom and bring back something that they found that is yellow. The tricky thing is that they have to bring different things, no duplicates allowed! Here is what we found for the color yellow. When we worked on our number activities, we practiced writing the number and word for the number 13. I made these worksheets that reinforces the one to one concept. The kids practice writing the number and have to color a square for each picture that they see. For our letter activities, we used our handwriting sheet for the letter Pp from this book. We did this worksheet that helps work on letter recognition that I got from this book. The students wrote in their journals for the letter. We turned a P into a Pig! This book is great, although this week I made up my own. I found this recipe for playdoh. The kids had a lot of fun playing with it! The kids made a little booklet calls Panda's Pillows that came from a Mailbox book: Letter of the Week. We made a retelling of the story "If You Give a Pig A Pancake" with the kids kids each illustrating a page. I love making little class books, the kids love making them too and their parents love to read them. I usually hang them up next to our Car Talk so the parents can flip through them at pickup. I made 3 pizzas out of paper plates and cut them into halves, quarters and eighths. The kids had a lot of fun putting them together and playing with the slices. Playing hot potato was super fun as well. For our alphabet wall we made puppies! Here are the words we came up with this week! Look at this adorable cupcake from one of the other classrooms! Up next week: "Ground Hogs and Shadows" and a focus on the letter Qq, number 14 and color gray.

100th Day Activities This past week my class celebrated the 100th Day of School. Here are some of the activities that filled our fun filled day! 100th Day Letter for Parents Our classroom door! I decorated our classroom door so the students would walk into the room excited about the 100th day of school. Bead necklace Bead Necklace Bead Necklace I gave each student a long line of yarn. One end I taped to the student's desk and on the other end I wrapped tape around it so the students could easily string the beads on. Then I passed out a plate to each student. I have three tables with six students at each. I put a bag of beads at each table. The students counted ten beads and placed them on their plate. Then they put them on the yarn. When I saw a table was finished putting the beads on the yarn, I switched the beads at each table. We continued this until the students had ten sets of ten. Once they were finished I tied the yarn and they put on their 100 bead necklace. The kiddos LOVED these. Before the 100th Day, get 100 chocolate kisses and number them 1-100. Hid them throughout the classroom before the students come in. Throughout the day, the students searched the classroom for chocolate kisses. When they would find one, they would look at the number written on the bottom of it and place it on the same number on the 100 chart. I quickly learned that I needed to set up rules for doing this because my students were running around the room in excitement grabbing handfuls of kisses. I quickly laid down the law with telling the students they could only search for kisses in between the activities we were doing or after they finished their activity. I also told them they could only have one kiss at a time. This helps SO much! All the students were very excited to do this and they couldn't wait to collect them all so they could eat some. 100's Chart Students filled out a 100 chart. Students stayed silent for 100 seconds. Students counted to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. Students did 100 exercises. Students drew themselves today and then drew what they would look like in 100 years. 100th Day Hat 100th Day Hat We made Happy 100th Day Hats! Before the 100th day, I had my assistant cut and staple ten stripes of construction paper to a sentence strip. Then on the 100th Day, the students used different things to make one hundred on their hat. This year I did, 10 dots of blue paint 10 dots of white paint 10 dots of purple paint 10 foam big circles 10 stickers 10 foam small circles 10 stickers 10 butterfly hole punches 10 cloud hole punches 10 flower hole punches We started the dots with the paint in the morning and then ended up finishing up the hats in the afternoon. Once the hats had all the ten pieces of paper covered with ten things, I measured each child's head with the sentence strip and stapled it together. The construction paper flapped over and made the hats looks wild. These hats are so much FUN! Happy 100th Day!- Label for hat Counting by 10's caterpillar. I passed out two sheets of paper with circles. The students colored these circles however they chose to. Then they cut them out and glued them in order counting by 10's. Zero and Zerona the Hero The students enjoying Zero and Zerona the Hero. Every ten days Zero the Hero or Zerona the Hero showed up in our classroom. They got the students excited about being another ten days smarter. Who ever showed up would say a poem to the class and they would count by tens with the students help. (some years I have them bring a zero snack, but recently I always forget so they just show up). On the 100th Day, both the Hero's show up since there are two zeros in 100. Again a poem is read. I also have a pink cape (Zerona the Hero) and a red cape (Zero the Hero) that I choose a student to wear on the tenth day. On the 100th Day I have two students wear the cape. 100th Day Snack Mix For our snack on the 100th Day, I set ten snacks around a table. I call each student up to the table and give them a zip lock baggie. The students count 10 of each item for their snack. Dollar Students get a big piece of green construction paper. I passed out four number ones to each student to cut out. The students glued the ones to each corner of the green paper. Then I passed out a picture of George Washington for the students to cut and glue to their green paper. Next I pass out pennies to the students. They have to put 100 pennies on the their dollar. Pennies Ones for Dollar George Washington Picture 100 designs I gave each student a blank piece of paper and a one and two zeros cut out in black paper. I told the students to create a picture with the numbers. It could be anything they wanted to make it. Then they glued the numbers on and created their creation. Our 100th Day went by SOOOOO fast! I'm 100 years old for the 100th day! Every year I usually wear my 100th Days Smarter shirt from Really Good Stuff, however this year was different. I wanted to be different. I decided to dress like I was 100 years old. It was so much fun! I loved seeing everyone's reaction to me. Most people didn't know who I was, which I guess is a good thing, right? My kiddos thought it was so funny that I was dressed up. They were really concerned about my hair not going back to normal. Every time I would talk like a grammy, they just thought it was the funniest thing. I am so glad the students enjoyed it. I am hoping this day will be a day that the students remember. 100th Day Contract- Students receive this contract to complete for homework on the 100th Day. Kindergarten and the expectations of kindergartners has changed so much since I first began teaching. We have been more focused on data to guide students learning. I am always trying to think of ways to encourage and motivate my students to learn to keep up with the rigorous pace that is expected in kindergarten. I wanted to share how I keep my students motivated, parents informed, and celebrate students achievements. I created learning goals crowns as a way to reach these targets. They are a favorite of students and I wanted to share how I use them in my classroom to keep students motivated! I copy all material and have them prepped for August when we start school... I use crowns for letter names, letter sounds, number identification 1-20, counting to 100 and sight words. I keep all of our crowns for the whole year in my assessment binder with each students tracking sheet. Each time I assess students, I record it on their tracking sheet. I try to use a different color pen each time I assess and record the date in that color. This also provides you with documentation on the child and their learning if you should happen to need it. If a child is able to identify something, I circle it. I usually go back to recheck letters or numbers that are marked in the the previous color that I assessed, to make sure the student really remembers it. The students also keep track of their learning on their crown. They color in the letter names, sound or numbers that they know, each time they are assessed. I store all of my crowns and tracking sheets in my assessment binder and students update them each time they are assessed. I also copy my tracking sheet and keep it in my students homework folder and update it weekly... It is amazing how much they learn in a week and they the students know and their parents know what they still have to work on. Keeping the tracking sheet in their homework folder and updating it regularly, has also helped so much in getting parents involved in their child's learning. I try to assess each student every week for most of the first quarter and keep it updated it in their homework folder. I usually have 25-30 students in my class each year so I make sure I assess a few students each day to keep it updated. Using this accountability and motivation, it amazed me how quickly students are able to learn their letters and sounds. Most of my students come in not being able to identify any letter names or sounds in August, and the majority of my class is usually able to master all letter names and letter sounds by the end of the first quarter. Once a student has mastered a concept, for example, knowing all of their letter names, they get their crown to wear home! They love it and are always so proud of their achievement!!! These crowns have really given students ownership and accountability for this learning. On more than one occasion, I have assessed a child and sent them home. The next day they come into the classroom being so excited that they learned those last few numbers or letters. They let the students know what their learning targets are for these basic skills an what they still have to learn to get there! You can check out these Learning Goals Crowns in my TPT store by clicking on the image below, they have worked wonders in my classroom! Included in this packets are crowns for letter names, letter sounds, sight words, counting to 100, number identification 1-20, and also include and editable crown, just in case you would like to add more :)) What resources have you found to be effective for students to keep track of their learning?
