100th Day Activities This past week my class celebrated the 100th Day of School. Here are some of the activities that filled our fun filled day! 100th Day Letter for Parents Our classroom door! I decorated our classroom door so the students would walk into the room excited about the 100th day of school. Bead necklace Bead Necklace Bead Necklace I gave each student a long line of yarn. One end I taped to the student's desk and on the other end I wrapped tape around it so the students could easily string the beads on. Then I passed out a plate to each student. I have three tables with six students at each. I put a bag of beads at each table. The students counted ten beads and placed them on their plate. Then they put them on the yarn. When I saw a table was finished putting the beads on the yarn, I switched the beads at each table. We continued this until the students had ten sets of ten. Once they were finished I tied the yarn and they put on their 100 bead necklace. The kiddos LOVED these. Before the 100th Day, get 100 chocolate kisses and number them 1-100. Hid them throughout the classroom before the students come in. Throughout the day, the students searched the classroom for chocolate kisses. When they would find one, they would look at the number written on the bottom of it and place it on the same number on the 100 chart. I quickly learned that I needed to set up rules for doing this because my students were running around the room in excitement grabbing handfuls of kisses. I quickly laid down the law with telling the students they could only search for kisses in between the activities we were doing or after they finished their activity. I also told them they could only have one kiss at a time. This helps SO much! All the students were very excited to do this and they couldn't wait to collect them all so they could eat some. 100's Chart Students filled out a 100 chart. Students stayed silent for 100 seconds. Students counted to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. Students did 100 exercises. Students drew themselves today and then drew what they would look like in 100 years. 100th Day Hat 100th Day Hat We made Happy 100th Day Hats! Before the 100th day, I had my assistant cut and staple ten stripes of construction paper to a sentence strip. Then on the 100th Day, the students used different things to make one hundred on their hat. This year I did, 10 dots of blue paint 10 dots of white paint 10 dots of purple paint 10 foam big circles 10 stickers 10 foam small circles 10 stickers 10 butterfly hole punches 10 cloud hole punches 10 flower hole punches We started the dots with the paint in the morning and then ended up finishing up the hats in the afternoon. Once the hats had all the ten pieces of paper covered with ten things, I measured each child's head with the sentence strip and stapled it together. The construction paper flapped over and made the hats looks wild. These hats are so much FUN! Happy 100th Day!- Label for hat Counting by 10's caterpillar. I passed out two sheets of paper with circles. The students colored these circles however they chose to. Then they cut them out and glued them in order counting by 10's. Zero and Zerona the Hero The students enjoying Zero and Zerona the Hero. Every ten days Zero the Hero or Zerona the Hero showed up in our classroom. They got the students excited about being another ten days smarter. Who ever showed up would say a poem to the class and they would count by tens with the students help. (some years I have them bring a zero snack, but recently I always forget so they just show up). On the 100th Day, both the Hero's show up since there are two zeros in 100. Again a poem is read. I also have a pink cape (Zerona the Hero) and a red cape (Zero the Hero) that I choose a student to wear on the tenth day. On the 100th Day I have two students wear the cape. 100th Day Snack Mix For our snack on the 100th Day, I set ten snacks around a table. I call each student up to the table and give them a zip lock baggie. The students count 10 of each item for their snack. Dollar Students get a big piece of green construction paper. I passed out four number ones to each student to cut out. The students glued the ones to each corner of the green paper. Then I passed out a picture of George Washington for the students to cut and glue to their green paper. Next I pass out pennies to the students. They have to put 100 pennies on the their dollar. Pennies Ones for Dollar George Washington Picture 100 designs I gave each student a blank piece of paper and a one and two zeros cut out in black paper. I told the students to create a picture with the numbers. It could be anything they wanted to make it. Then they glued the numbers on and created their creation. Our 100th Day went by SOOOOO fast! I'm 100 years old for the 100th day! Every year I usually wear my 100th Days Smarter shirt from Really Good Stuff, however this year was different. I wanted to be different. I decided to dress like I was 100 years old. It was so much fun! I loved seeing everyone's reaction to me. Most people didn't know who I was, which I guess is a good thing, right? My kiddos thought it was so funny that I was dressed up. They were really concerned about my hair not going back to normal. Every time I would talk like a grammy, they just thought it was the funniest thing. I am so glad the students enjoyed it. I am hoping this day will be a day that the students remember. 100th Day Contract- Students receive this contract to complete for homework on the 100th Day. Thanks for reading my blog post about our 100th Day of School. I hope your got a new idea you can use with your class.

Are you gearing up for your 100th day of school? Here are some fun ideas and a FREE counting mat to help your class celebrate the 100th day of school!
Our theme last week was "Construction" and we focused on the letter P, number 13 and color yellow. We read this week: Curious George Makes Pancakes by Margret and HA Rey The 100th Day of School by Angela Shelf Medearis If you Give a Pig and Pancake by Laura Numeroff Curious George and the Puppies by Margret and HA Rey My First Chinese New Year by Karen Katz We finished the month of January this week (CAN'T BELIEVE IT!) so we got to compare this year's weather and last years! Our question of the week was "What would you like 100 of?" Some of these answers were great! For our theme of the week, we did talk some about construction. Other thank some discussions about what construction is, and building with blocks, we focused more on two very special days that happened this week. I just have to share the sensory table from a younger classroom. How cute! First we had our 100th day of school! My kids were fascinated by this and kept counting to 100 all day. We used construction paper, paper plates and dot paint to make 100 gumballs! In small groups we counted 10 dots for each color of paint to get to 100. The Lunar New Year also fell this week. I bought this place mat from Pottery Barn Kids that shows the different animals. On the back I wrote little blurbs about what each animal stands for, years, and who they do/do not get along with. The kids loved finding out what animal year that they were born in. We also colored pictures and made paper fans to celebrate with. This kids really put a lot of effort into their pictures, which I loved! We talked about the color yellow, and we sang "Yellow Sun" to the tune of "Row your boat" "Bright sun shining down, Shining on the ground. What a lovely face you have, Yellow, big and round." I got it from here! When we focus on a color I love to do "color hunts" in our classroom. Each child takes a turn to walk around the classroom and bring back something that they found that is yellow. The tricky thing is that they have to bring different things, no duplicates allowed! Here is what we found for the color yellow. When we worked on our number activities, we practiced writing the number and word for the number 13. I made these worksheets that reinforces the one to one concept. The kids practice writing the number and have to color a square for each picture that they see. For our letter activities, we used our handwriting sheet for the letter Pp from this book. We did this worksheet that helps work on letter recognition that I got from this book. The students wrote in their journals for the letter. We turned a P into a Pig! This book is great, although this week I made up my own. I found this recipe for playdoh. The kids had a lot of fun playing with it! The kids made a little booklet calls Panda's Pillows that came from a Mailbox book: Letter of the Week. We made a retelling of the story "If You Give a Pig A Pancake" with the kids kids each illustrating a page. I love making little class books, the kids love making them too and their parents love to read them. I usually hang them up next to our Car Talk so the parents can flip through them at pickup. I made 3 pizzas out of paper plates and cut them into halves, quarters and eighths. The kids had a lot of fun putting them together and playing with the slices. Playing hot potato was super fun as well. For our alphabet wall we made puppies! Here are the words we came up with this week! Look at this adorable cupcake from one of the other classrooms! Up next week: "Ground Hogs and Shadows" and a focus on the letter Qq, number 14 and color gray.

Wow! I can't believe we have already reached the 100th day of school! I love my class and I knew they were going to enjoy all the things I had in store for them. Monday was our 100th day. I planned 3 centers for the morning: 1. 100th Day Crown 2. 100th Day Snack 3. 100th Day Necklace 1. 100th Day Crown The Friday before, I started gathering all of the materials at school to make their cute 100th Day crown. I used sentence strips and 5 different colors of construction paper. I cut the paper into one-inch strips. Earlier in the week I printed off the "I am 100 days smarter!" headers. I originally made those last year, so I was glad they were already on my computer - one less thing I had to make. Since it was Friday, I was ready to get home, so I gathered everything up and packed it all, to be continued at home. Here are a couple of pictures of the process. This first one was taken at school. So at home on Sunday afternoon, I finished the project. I glued down the strips of construction paper about one inch apart, intentionally leaving about 4 to 6 inches on one end for sizing and stapling. Once I had glued down one set of strips, I repeated the pattern so that there were 10 strips. Here is the set up at the center table with bingo daubers. I put the rest of them on their desks and told them to pick them up and carry then to the table when it was their turn. So you will see them on a few student desks in other pics, even though they are working on a different activity. Here are three of my sweeties working on their awesome crowns. I put out my bingo daubers for my kiddos to choose from. With ten strips, they stamped 10 dots on each strip, making 100 dots. The sweetie in the white shirt in the picture got a little "dot-happy" and dotted the sentence strip portion too, before I could stop her. Oh well, I couldn't bring myself to tell her she had way more than 100 dots. LOL When they finished, they took their crowns to their desk to dry. That opened up the space for another group to come to the table. To finish it off, I sized the sentence strip around each student's head, then stapled it together. Lastly, I took hold of the end of each strip, laying the ends on top of one another. Then I stapled all the ends together, making a crown. They were so pumped to get to show off their new "I'm 100 Days Smarter" crowns as we walked to the lunchroom! I got the original idea for this crown from Pinterest. I tried following the link to Mrs Morrow's Kindergarteners, but it was only available to invited members. She used stickers, but I like the bingo dauber dots, and my kids love anything to do with PAINT! 2. 100th Day Snack A week ahead of time, I sent out a letter to parents requesting a variety of snacks that we easily count to make our trail-mix style snack. This list included the following: bowls, Chex cereal, Cherioes cereal, gummy bears, raisins, marshmallows, Skittles, M&Ms, chocolate morsels, Goldfish, and red hots. Ten snacks. Friday evening, before I left school, I assessed what students had brought. I stopped by the store and picked up chocolate morsels (a student forgot to bring them) and a couple of extra bags of gummy bears. Monday morning, even before the kids got to school, I began setting everything out, but this took a lot more time than I had remembered from last year. So, if you think you want to do this too, have some engaging morning work out for them to do independently in case you need a few extra minutes to finish the set up. I put out two sets of snacks. One set for the left side of the table and one for the right side. I set out hundred boards for my kiddos to use for counting their snack. Ten frames or other sorting mats would work great too, but I just love using my hundred boards for counting on the 100th Day of School. The idea... 10 rows of each of the 10 snacks makes 100 snacks. In this picture, you can see another group of kids working at their desks. They are working on the third center activity, the 100 Day Necklace. Once their board was complete, together we slid their yummy snacks into a baggie and zipped it up for them to hold until morning recess. Our recess is at 10:40, so I knew this activity had to be completed by then. You may want to keep your snack or recess time in mind as you plan out your day. They all thought it was funny that I made myself a snack bag as well. YUM! 3. The 100th Day Necklace In my parent letter, I also asked for a box of Fruit Loops. I went to Hobby Lobby to find my Rexlace. It only cost a couple of dollars. I cut strips about 4 feet long. That is more than you will need, but that length will give you enough to tie the knot. To keep the front loops from falling off, I put a small paperclip on one end. I had students use a hundred chart to layout their Fruit loops, so they could be more accurate, than if they were simply counting as they put the cereal on their string. This worked GREAT! First graders loose their place easily when counting if they are distracted, so using the hundred chart is a helpful tool for all sorts of counting activities. When their hundred chart was full, they began threading their cereal onto their Rexlace. I made these numbered tabs to indicate each group of 10 Fruit Loops. (Aren't they cute?) There were two sets to a page. I printed them at home so I could have color (only a black and white printer at school), cut them out, punched a hole in the top and packed each set into a snack size baggie. The next day, all I had to do was lay out a baggie on everyone's desk along with this "My 100th Day Necklace" sheet. I wish I knew where I got this, but its at school and I'm typing this post at home. I'll try to remember to look and come back to post the link. Here's what they looked like before I tied them off. Rexlace is very slippery, so you'll need to tie a good and tight knot to keep the necklaces together, but mine worked great. Using the numbered tabs really helped me quickly check to make sure the correct amount of cereal was on each student's necklace. For example, when there are only 6 Fruit Loops between two numbered tabs, it is easy to spot the difference in length, compared to all the other length segments on the necklace. THE FINISHED PRODUCT! Both crown and necklace This little jokester, thought he looked so funny peeking through the strips! These three activities and recess took up our morning. After lunch we read the book 100 Hungry Ants, which they absolutely love. It is a perfect book for the hundredth day of school for most any elementary class. Click on the picture if you want to pick up a copy for yourself from Amazon. You can get your own classroom copy of this book by clicking on the link below. Afterwards, we walked around the room using our clip boards, to write 100 words. We stacked 100 pennies. We painted 100 dots. They LOVE PAINTING! EXTRA: 100th Day Puzzle We put together this Hundred Day puzzle, and oh my goodness, this was one of their favorites! They loved that they were making a puzzle that they could put back together later! First, I had them glue it to a piece of construction paper. I suggest glue sticks, but a generous amount. Liquid glue makes paper buckle. The construction paper made it more sturdy and gave them a colorful back. You could also print them on card stock. Next, they carefully cut out each piece. I always demonstrate the best way to cut. First graders need to see you model how to cut things. Then under my document camera we put my puzzle together as a whole group, and they saw that if they counted by tens correctly, that would put their puzzle together correctly. They were eager beavers to get to their puzzles! After it was put together, they colored it. Again, I modeled how to do this as well. (This took a lot of time too. I'm just saying! LOL) They turned out great! I gave each kiddo a baggie to hold their puzzle pieces. If you would like a FREE copy of this puzzle, click here. Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.

We've had 34 days of school so far. It's amazing to think how much the kids have learned and grown in such a short amount of time. (Me, too!) Each year, I count the days by bundling craft sticks in a place value pouch. Then I saw this on Pinterest: (It was just a picture, no link. Not sure who gets credit.) Can I say how much I LOVE counting the days on Ten Frames? LOVE! I thought about making one but my room is so tiny, I don't have the space. So, I came up with a compromise: It's simple. It's small at 8.5x11. It's perfect for my room. Maybe yours? Enjoy!
