With inspiration from scrap-booking where you put different pieces together for a pleasent harmony, I worked this child cardigan using different stitch-patterns. Along the way I was thinking that this would be the perfect bridesmaids cardigan, or a cardigan for special occasions.. And I really enjoyed working it, it was great fun to knit the different patterns: from the moss-st (seed-st) edges, the petal border, the honeycomb and the roman lace. They all worked so well together:) Design: Classic lines to ensure the best possible fit for your baby/toddler. Construction: The cardigan is seamlessly worked bottom-up. Lower body is worked side-to-side, sleeves are worked in-the-round. At underarms body and sleeves are joined and work is continued in one piece. The upper body is shaped by raglan-decreases, Sts are picked up for neckline and button-bands. Sizes: Cardigan: finished chest circumference, when buttoned: 3months 41cm/16” / 6months 45cm/16.75” / 9months 48cm/19” / 1 year 52cm/20.5” / 18months 55cm/21.5” / 2y 58cm/23” / 3 y 60cm/23.5” / 4y 63cm/24.75” . Materials I recommend that you use a sport weight yarn with great stitch-definition. I used the sport weight ”Pashmina” from Madelinetosh to work the cardigan. This yarn comes in skeins of 329meters/360yards. You will need approximately 270/310/350/390/430/480/520/575 meters = 295/340/385/425/470/525/570/630 yards to work the cardi. Yardage might vary from yarn to yarn and from one knitter to another. Needles: Choose needle size to obtain gauge. I used needle size 3.5mm/US4, this is a suggestion only. For the lower body you might use a circular or straight needles. For the upper body I recommend a circular needle. For the sleeves you might use a set of dpns or a circular needle (if working the magic loop). For the neckline and button-bands you can use a circular or straight needles. Notions: 4 removable stitch-markers, separate holders, buttons 13-15mm/0.5-0.6” across. The pattern All measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches. All necessary stitch-counts are given. There is a schematic. All patterns are written out, row-by-row (round-by-round for sleeves). Please note that there is no chart. Knitting skills The pattern gives you the occasion of trying out some new stitch-patterns. However, all the patterns are easy to work, no special skills are needed. To work the cardigan you should be able to cast-on, bind-off, pick up sts, working in the round, working simple decreases and increases.

Inspired by some various projects I've seen for using up scraps, I decided to make an alphabet matching game using some of my ridiculous amounts of scrap fabric. And of course, the project kept growing as it went, and is taking a while to perfect, but I think the outcome is going to be great! I may even use this same idea/pattern to attempt an alphabet quilt. No, I don't actually know how to quilt. Yes, I'm crazy. I decided to break this project up into multiple posts because I think otherwise I'd end up with one monstrous, confusing tutorial. So today I'm posting about the beginning of the process, and the free printable pattern! For the letters I used Arial Black - I wanted a font that would be easy to trace and cut out, and the letters would be very clear. If you make your own pattern, be sure to choose a sans serif font - one without the little lines at the edges of the letters - because they are much easier to cut out, and also easier for kids to identify. ex: A A The one on the left is a sans serif, the one the right is not - it has serifs. Here is the printable pattern for all of the letters. Then came the tricky part - coming up with something for each letter that could be easily identified when just the shape was cut out of fabric. And that a young child would know - or at least mine would. It took a little while, a little cheating (X and Q are really hard!), and the help of my sisters, but I finally came up with shapes for all the letters! (still trying to come up with a few letters here) Some of them I modified from clip art and other pictures I found online, and many of them I drew myself (I'm really proud and surprised by this! Maybe I can draw after all! But only basic shapes...) But I finally got all of them the right size, and (hopefully) identifiable shapes. So here is the printable pattern for all of the matching alphabet shapes! Once you've printed out your pattern, start cutting them all out. It takes a while to cut out all the little pieces, so you can start on that while you wait for the rest of the tutorial! :) A few of the shapes might be harder to identify, so let me explain. J is a jellyfish, but it's going to have ric-rac/ribbon tentacles, so I didn't draw them on the shape outline. Q is for queen, but this one I kind of cheated and did a crown. The rectangle for X is for "x marks the spot" and it's a treasure map - I have some awesome pirate-themed fabric that is perfect for this one! Is this one cheating too? I think it might be... And the circle for Y is for yo-yo. I'm going to attach a string/ribbon to it. Once it's all finished, I'll have the matching game magnet book pages with all of the letters and shapes. One of the fun things about these patterns is that they can be used for so many other things - as stencils, coloring pages, other matching games, really anything. We love Matching Games. I have to admit that Bethany is a little too good at these games these days, and Mummy definitely doesn't have to let her win anymore...she just does it on her own. I blame baby brain ... I wonder how long I can continue to use that excuse? I first saw this idea of a fabric matching game on a stall at the craft market ,"Wheel 'n Weft", that's run a couple of times a year in Thornleigh, Sydney. They were completed by some very talented twin sister crafters known as The Twin Thing. I loved the idea, and thought it would make a great project to use up some scrap fabrics. It's also really cute!! The game by The Twin Thing had small circles of fabric appliqued onto plain colour backgrounds, and a little matching draw-string bag to hold all of the pieces. Now, I'm very new to applique, and the thought of sewing carefully around 20 little circles kinda freaked me out, but I did like the idea of having some applique practice. So I decided I'd do squares instead. I searched the net for some more inspiration, and looked at a few blogs and tutorials I found online like this and this, but in the end this is what I came up with ... UPDATE - If you'd like a set of these, but don't have the time to make them, I've now added a couple of sets to my Etsy shop for sale. Head over and take a look!! Otherwise feel free to use my tutorial below to make your own! I used: - 10 different scraps of quilting fabric - Fat quarter of white background fabric - Fat quarter of backing fabric (I used pink gingham ... you can never have too much gingham!!) - 1 Button - White thread - Sewing Machine - Iron - Time Taken: About 3-4 hours - cutting all the pieces is a little time-consuming, but kinda therapeutic! Tip: I used a rotary cutter, quilter's ruler and mat to cut all the pieces. Cutting: - Cut 20 squares (3.5 inches x 3.5 inches) from the white background fabric - Cut 20 squares (3.5 inches x 3.5 inches) from the backing fabric (pink gingham) - Cut 2 squares (2 inches by 2 inches) from each of the fabric scraps (ie 20 squares in total) Sewing: - Pin the small squares onto the middle of the white background fabric, then using a small zig-zag stitch sew around each, trying to sew right at the edge of the square to make it look nice and neat. I lower the needle, then lift the machine foot to pivot at each corner, so that you have to stop less times, and have less threads to trim off. - Place the white background squares and backing fabric squares right side together, and sew around the edges using a 1/4 inch seam. Leave a small opening (about an inch) in the side of each square for turning through. - Turn the squares through the right way (using the little hole you left in the seam). - Iron each square, being careful to fold in a 1/4 inch seam at each of the openings left from turning them through. - Topstitch around the edge (about 2-3mm from the edge) all around the squares. This just makes them sit better. Ta-da ... you have a matching game. Mine is definitely not perfect, but I think that's part of the charm! Now of course, any cute matching game needs a matching bag!! Mine is kinda like an envelope. - Cut 2 rectangles (6.5 inches by 14 inches) from a matching fabric (what was it I said about never having enough gingham?!?) - Cut diagonal lines at one end of both rectangles to make a point (this is easiest if you lay both pieces on top of each other and cut both together) - Put the two pieces right side together and sew using a 1/4 inch seam around 3 sides, leaving the bottom (straight) edge open for turning. - Turn through to bring the right sides out. - Iron the whole thing flat, then turn under and iron a 1/4 inch seam across the bottom that you left open for turning. - Top-stitch along the bottom. - Fold the bottom up to about 3 inches from the top point, then pin the sides to hold it together. - Start at the bottom on one side and top stitch 1/4 inch in from the edge. Go up the side, across the top via the point, and down the other side. This holds it all together in an envelope shape. - Use the machine button-hole function and foot to make a button hole just below the point (make sure you measure it against your button to make sure it fits .... I'm speaking from experience there!!) - Sew the button on the front. - Do up the button, then topstitch along the top edge, about 2mm in from the edge to help it sit better. I think it's gorgeous, and I reckon it's a fabulous gift idea for a kiddy friend! Mine is very girly looking with all that pink gingham, but I'm sure you could make an amazing boy version!
