VERSES: 1 Samuel 4:1-22 MEMORY VERSE: 1 Samuel 4:17 "...and the ark of God is taken." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review all 66 books of the Bible. As a different kind of review, the Bible teacher may want to write each book on a good-sized piece of paper. The Bible teacher holds up a random book, and the students must name the book that comes AFTER that book. Too easy? Try a 'Challenge Test!' The students must name the book that comes BEFORE that book! PRAYER: If God is on our side, we can do anything. May we always stay close to the LORD and His Word and obey Him, then God will be with us and help us in all that we do. SPECIAL SONG: God called Samuel (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog). God Raised Up Fifteen Judges (see June - Lesson - Deborah, A Female Prophet on this blog). VISUAL AID: Whiteboard or Chalkboard Drawing of Activity (see Activity below) LESSON POINTS: God spoke to Samuel and Samuel would tell the people what God said. That is what a prophet is: a spokesman for God or a messenger of God's Words. The Philistines and Israel never did get along very well. They had many fights and battles. Sometimes the Philistines would win, and sometimes, when Israel was obedient to God, Israel would win. In our lesson today, the Philistines were winning a battle against Israel, in fact, the Philistines had killed 4,000 Israelites. When the Israelites returned to their camp, the elders or leaders asked, "Why did the LORD let us be defeated by our enemy, the Philistines, today? " Then they had the idea of going to get the ark of the covenant or ark of God from Shiloh and keeping it in their camp. They thought that the ark of God would save them from their enemies, but they were mistaken. God never rewards disobedience. The Israelites were not obeying the LORD and were living very wickedly. Even the judge of Israel, Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas were among the most wicked because they were causing Israel to sin (1 Samuel 2:23-25). When the people sent messengers to Shiloh and wanted the ark of the covenant brought to where the army was fighting, Hophni and Phineas were the ones who brought the ark of God to the battleground. When the ark of the covenant was brought into the camp, there was a shout from all of the soldiers of Israel because they thought that God would help them. The Israelites' shout was SO loud that the Philistine army heard them. They wondered what could have made the Israelites shout like they did and when they realized that the ark of God must have been brought into the camp, they were afraid. The Philistines said to one another, "How sad for us! Nothing like this has ever been done before! These are the Gods that brought all of those plagues to the Egyptians! We need to act like men and fight or the Israelites will be our masters if we fail!" So the Philistines fought the Israelites very hard and made all of the Israelites run to their own tents. The Philistines killed 30,000 soldiers of Israel and they killed both Hophni and Phineas. There was a man from the tribe of Benjamin that ran back to Shiloh with word that there was a great defeat of the Israelites and many, many soldiers had died. He had torn his clothes and put dirt on his head because he was very sad. When the man came into the city and told the people what had happened, everyone was crying. Eli was sitting by the wayside, and when Eli saw the man, his heart trembled because he thought something might have happened to the ark of the LORD. He asked the man, "What has happened? What has caused everyone to cry?" The man hurriedly came and told Eli what had happened. Now, Eli was 98 years old and his eyes were almost blind and he was not a thin man. The man said that the Israelites had many soldiers killed and they had run away from their enemy. He said that his two sons were killed and that the ark of God had been taken by the Philistines. When the man mentioned the part about the ark of God being taken by the enemy, Eli fell backwards off his seat by the side of the gate and broke his neck and died. Eli was a very old man, was very heavy, and had judged Israel forty years. "Older Student" Tips: We remember that God had been with the children of Israel many times before this time and the Israelites had won their battles. What made this time different? (The children of Israel were not obeying the LORD and living wickedly.) ACTIVITY: God NEVER Rewards Disobedience Materials needed: 12" x 18" white construction paper, crayons, marker. Hand out white construction paper. Fold paper in half. Fold paper in half again, so that there are four sections. Write "God NEVER Rewards Disobedience" and "1 Samuel 4" at the top of the paper. Number each section. In Section #1, draw a soldier and write the number "30,000." Make X's for eyes because the soldier has died. In Section #2, draw many circles, representing the faces of the children of Israel. Also, write "The ark of God is taken!" in a speech bubble. In Section #3, draw two men. Also, write "Hophni and Phineas killed." Make X's for eyes because they also died. In Section #4, draw heavy-set Eli sitting on a bench. Draw an arrow pointing the way he fell backwards and died.

The kiddos are sooo excited about this "NEW" material. We are truly on an EXPLORATION! I love it when their eyes light up in AWE about what they are hearing from GOD'S Word. Our recent lesson was about GOD calling Samuel. I reminded the kiddos that GOD did NOT speak directly to the Fathers (as HE had done during the Patriarchal time) because, HE had given Moses HIS Law for the Hebrews. So, when GOD called Samuel it was a VERY SPECIAL EVENT! Our TAKE HOME activity was Samuel in bed. The children LOVED being able to slide Samuel's eyes open and shut. As they pulled the top slide Samuel's eyes opened and the Scripture reference "Speak Lord for your servant's listening..." 1 Samuel 3, would appear on the bedding. Each of the kiddos bed looked different...I love it when the girls choose PINK for bedding and the boys choose BLUE! So typical! LOL I decided this would be an appropriate Memory Verse...We ALL have ears and we ALL need to be listening to GOD'S WORD! We sang the Memory Verse to the tune: "B-I-N-G-O." Most of the kiddos had the verse memorized before leaving the classroom. I know I sang it ALL week long. There is something about putting verses to a familiar tune that helps with memorizing them. If you have NEVER tried putting a verse to a childhood tune, I suggest you give it a try....you will be amazed at how easy it is to memorize Scripture this way. Our Review/Game was a LISTENING GAME. I purchased the little cups and the Yellow/Red Game pieces at the Dollar Tree. (The game pieces came out of a TOPPLE type game.) I wrote a song for this lesson called, "God Was Calling Samuel." I sang the song to the children...each time they heard me sing "GOD" they had to put a yellow game piece in their cup. Each time they heard me sing "Samuel" they had to put a red game piece in their cup. THEY LOVED THIS GAME!!!!!! They wanted to play it OVER and OVER and OVER again!!!!! So, we decided to change out the "What to listen for..." I was sort of surprised at how much they LOVED playing this. This is one game I will try to work into other lessons! I LOVE it when something so inexpensive is soooo effective!!! Our EAA, which stands for EARLY ARRIVAL ACTIVITY was the WHITE BOARDS/DRAWING activity. (I really need to post some of the pictures that they have drawn.) The LOVE drawing on the personal sized white boards...so, I am going to keep it up for a few more Sunday's .....However, I did include some of the MILK CAP MANIA....and they WHIZZED right through them!!!! I was soooo pleased with how many of the kiddos are REMEMBERING what they have learned!!!! The EEAs allow me to "TEST" the kiddos knowledge....and let me know if I need to review something, correct something or even re-teach something. My EAA's have to have a purpose...or I would NOT use them. I never want something to STEAL away my precious 45 minutes of teaching time! On Wednesday Evening the kiddos colored a picture of Samuel in bed. They added the bedpost (colored craft sticks) and a POP-UP speech bubble with "Samuel, Samuel" on it. Again, the differences in each of their activities is so unique to their personality. Some of the girl's added flowers to the blanket....and one of the boy's made his blanket have a camouflage type pattern. I LOVE their unique individuality!!! GOD blesses me ro richley through these little ones! For a VISUAL aid I decided to make a LARGE version of the TAKE HOME project....The kiddos LOVED pulling the slide on this one.... I used it while telling the story...I believed this helped the kiddos when it came time to make their own...they had already seen this work so the knew what to do. When I can't find a VISUAL aid in my resources, clip art, or FREE online, I will MAKE IT MYSELF...LOL We have already been so busy. The kiddos amaze me each week.... Our main review questions this week were: Who was the Strong Judge? Who was the Judge after Samson? What other "job's" did Eli have? Who was Samuel's mom? Who was Samuel's dad? Where did Hannah go to pray? What did Eli think about Hannah when he saw her praying? In what city was the Tabernacle? What did Hannah promise GOD? Did Hannah keep her promises? What did Hannah bring Samuel each year? Can children be servants to the LORD? They knew ALL the answers!!!!!! I was soooo pleased!!!!! I feel soooo blessed to be a BIBLE CLASS teacher!!!! VERSES: 1 Samuel 5:1-12 MEMORY VERSE: 1 Samuel 5:3 "...Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review the books of the Bible. We will be beginning the Old Testament books again soon. PRAYER: Praise God that He is Creator over all, who is all-knowing, present everywhere, and all powerful, and the only God. SPECIAL SONG: God Called Samuel (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog). VISUAL AID: A Large Activity LESSON POINTS: Last time we talked about how the Philistines had won the battle with the Israelites and had captured the ark of the covenant, also called the ark of God, which the Israelites had carried into battle. The ark of the covenant was highly treasured by the Israelites and they had thought it would help them win the battle with the Philistines, but instead the Philistines had captured it. So let's see what happened to this wicked nation who captured the ark of the covenant. After the battle with the Israelites, the Philistines, who knew nothing of the ark of the covenant except that the Israelites treasured it, took it to their city of Ashdod. They did not know that it was to stay inside the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle. The Israelites paid a great price for moving the ark of the covenant and the Philistines would, too. In Ashdod, they placed the ark of God in the house of their own idol, which they called Dagon, and set the ark of the covenant close beside the idol. Early the next morning, when the people of Ashdod went in to see the ark of the covenant, they found their great stone statue Dagon had fallen forward face down on the ground right in front of the ark of the covenant! The people set Dagon up again and when they got up early the next morning, they found Dagon had again fallen on his face in front of the ark of God, but something was different this time. This time, Dagon's head and both palms of his hands were broken and they laid upon the threshhold of the door. Only the stump of Dagon was not broken. That is why the priests of Dagon step over the threshhold of the door when they go into worship Dagon in Ashdod. The LORD caused a lot of trouble for the people of Ashdod and their neighboring nations by making the people brake out in sores all over their bodies. The men of Ashdod knew that the reason for the bad things happening to them was because they had captured the ark of God. They said, "The ark of the God of Israel will not live here with us, for He is causing much trouble for us and for Dagon, our god." So the men of Ashdod called for the leaders of the Philistines and asked them what they should do with the ark of God. The leaders decided that carrying the ark of the covenant to the city of Gath was a good answer, but they were wrong. All that the people of Ashdod wanted to do was to get rid of the ark of the covenant. They had fought, captured it, and now they were miserable because of it! After the ark of the covenant arrived in Gath, all of the people there broke out in sores just like they did in Ashdod! The hand of the LORD was heavy upon the Philistines which meant the Philistines were suffering. The people carried the ark of the covenant to another city called Ekron, but as soon as the ark of the covenant came into Ekron, the people started crying out, "They have brought the ark of God to our city, so that we should all die!" The men of Ekron again called for the leaders of the Philistines to come and take away the ark of God because people of Ekron were dying and again the Bible says that the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ekron. Whoever did not die in Ekron had terrible sores and the cry in the city of Ekron went up to heaven. Sometimes we have what we think is a good idea, but it turns out to be a bad idea. That was the way it was with the Philistines when they captured the ark of the covenant. "Older Student" Tips: Take a look on a biblical map and find the cities of Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath. Do you see how they make a triangle? A little to the north of those cities, you will find the city of Aphek which was the name of the place where the battle had taken place. ACTIVITY: Trouble For The Philistines And Dagon Materials needed: 6" x 12" blue construction paper, 3" x 3" tan construction paper, 3" x 8" gray construction paper, scissors, glue, marker or crayons. Hand out blue paper. Fold blue paper in three equal parts. Write "Trouble For The Philistines And Dagon" and "1 Samuel 5" at the top of the blue paper. Write "...Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD... verse 3" in the middle section of the blue paper. Pass out tan paper. Write "ark of the covenant" on the tan paper. Glue the ark of the covenant in the right section of blue paper. Hand out gray paper. Cut in half. Round corners of one piece of gray paper. This is Dagon's body. Cut remaining gray paper in half again. Round corners of one short piece of gray paper. This is Dagon's head. Fold the leftover gray paper in half. Cut a hand (which will be two hands since it is folded). These are Dagon's hands. Fold up 1/2" edge of the bottom of Dagon's body. Glue this 1/2" edge of Dagon's body ONLY to left side of blue paper, so it can bend down. Fold a small edge on each hand. Glue small edge of each hand and place both hands on Dagon's body. Fold blue paper like a card when taking activity home. Student may open unfold blue paper and 'prop' it open so it stands up (see picture). Let 'Dagon fall to the earth before the ark of the covenant. (see picture).

We have JUST begun our NEW UNIT!!!!!! We are going to be EXPLORING and learning about Eli, Samuel, Saul, David and Solomon. We are going to be VERY BUSY over the next quarter. This is the way I "CONTAIN" my teaching materials....I use a BIG BINDER and plastic sleeves----LOTS OF PLASTIC SLEEVES!!!!!! I am PRAYING fervently about this undertaking. It is a little more challenging to come up with activities, review games, etc. for the material we are about to EXPLORE......so, I am STRETCHING my brain as I work on these lessons. :-) This is what my classroom looks like!!! I am blessed to have a LARGE ROOM....with plenty of room for the kiddos activities!!! We have 'TABLE TIME" & "CIRCLE TIME." Our EAA, which stands for EARLY ARRIVAL ACTIVITY is a PUZZLE and then a DRAWING activity. I made this puzzle using frames from the Dollar Tree!!! I call the puzzle "GOD'S AMAZING PLAN!" It is truly a puzzle with each TIME PERIOD OF THE BIBLE in each puzzle piece. The kiddos worked together to get the puzzle in the correct chronological order!!! After they completed the puzzle I allowed them to draw in "white boards." These boards are cut from wall board that I purchased at LOWES.. $11.96 gave me 32 white boards!!!! I have shared them with ALL the other Bible Classes!!!! I had coded the white boards with various BIBLE characters and events. The kiddos had to draw me a picture of what they could remember about the character of event. THEY LOVED IT!!!!! All kiddos love to draw on the white/chalk board so, I decided to use this to MY ADVANTAGE!!!! I will post some pics of what they drew----They amazed me!!!!! We have NEW cards to add to our WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? and HOW? WALL!!!! We have a "NEW" map up on the wall. We have already added two locations!!!! The kiddos LOVE to add new locations to the map. This is our NEW bulletin board. BTW, I just use the WALL!!! We have 3 CROWNS and 3 MEN that would be KING. We will write (with a sharpie) information about each KING on each crow. BTW, the pictures came from DOLLAR TREE...I bought them last year....I sure hope they come out with MORE BIBLE related visuals! Hannah Praying Hannah's Answered Prayer! Our first lesson was about Hannah. Hannah prayed fervently for a baby boy. The kiddos were very engaged with this story. I explained how Hannah went to GOD through prayer. I let them know that GOD really wants us to let HIM know our wants and needs. They seemed to really get IT!!!! YAY!!!!! This was the kiddos "TAKE HOME." Our Memory Verse was Psalm 38:15. "For in YOU, O LORD, I hope. You will hear, O Lord my GOD." I felt this was an appropriate verse for the subject we were EXPLORING. We sang the verse to the tune: "One Little, Two Little, Three Little Indians." Our REVIEW Game was called "PIN THE BOTTLE ON SAMUEL" Each bottle had a question about the lesson written on it. If the kiddo answer correctly (which they ALL did) they had to opportunity to "pin" (we used double stick tape) the bottle to Samuel. They really enjoyed this!!!!! On Wednesday Evening the kiddos colored a picture of Samuel...added a "real" rattle and 3D blocks that spell SAMUEL. They all turned our soooo sweet. The kiddos added this to their NEW EXPLORER JOURNAL. (The rattles came from the DOLLAR TREE and we made the BLOCKS using little square wooden pieces and foamy 3D letters.) I told you we are going to be busy.... :-) And, I would NOT have it any other way!!!!! I feel soooo blessed to be a BIBLE CLASS teacher!!!! Some innovative castle designs by my middle school students, Samuel E. Shull Middle School, Perth Amboy NJ 2017 After watching the video of David Macaulay's Castle, my students designed their own fortresses. They tested the defensive walls by building catapults with popsicle sticks, rubber bands and spoons and firing mini marshmallows at their creations to see how many could land inside. Caerphilly Castle was built in the thirteenth century. It is the largest castle in Wales. To learn more about Caerphilly Castle, click here. HOW ARE THEY ALL ALIKE? Keep reading to find out. There was no standard shape and structure for a castle. The builders adapted their designs to suit the site, the budget and the military dangers of the day. THE ANATOMY OF A MEDIEVAL CASTLE Print out the picture above and look at all the basic parts that make up the anatomy of a Medieval castle. The castles all look very different from each other, yet they are all made up of the same basic components. See if you can identify the components all of these castles have in common. How would geographic location and the topography of the site influence a castle's design? Printable Worksheets How to build a paper castle You will need heavy paper, like oak tag or card stock, white glue,masking tape,cardboard for the base scissors,markers, paint and whatever else you wish to use to decorate your creation. A small inexpensive low temperature hot glue gun is useful but not necessary. The starting point: A tower You will need to build at least four of these towers and connect them by walls just to start building your castle. These worksheets are just to get you started. Be inventive! Figure out how to include all the parts of the castle from the moat and draw bridge to the gate house and portcullis to the inner ward and keep. Work in progress: These 7th grade students are creating a curtain wall, the wall surrounding their castle complex. A soldier can walk along this wall and shoot arrows at his enemies from behind the embrasures. These students have created a portcullis and draw bridge using yarn, Popsicle sticks and a low temperature hot glue gun. Interior and exterior shots of one 7th grade student's work in progress. She used a sharp scissors to cut the points on the Popsicle sticks that form the portcullis. When each group was done constructing their castles I gave them 12 Popsicle sticks, a rubber band, a plastic spoon and permission to go over to the hot glue gun table. Their mission? To design a working catapult capable of lobbing mini marshmallows into another group's castle. This website gives step by step directions but I prefer to have my students come up with their own designs. STEAM connection: How does building a catapult connect art to science, technology, engineering and math? When you create a catapult you are using a simple macine, the lever. If you pull the spoon back, the taut rubber band has potential energy. When you let go of the spoon the marshmallow is propelled by force and has kinetic energy. When you pull the rubber band back to a 45 degree angle, the marshmallow will travel the farthest distance. When you pull it back farther, the marshmallow will travel higher, but not go as far. We set up our catapults behind a taped barrier and asked the students to see how many mini marshmallows they could get into each castle. In order to make it over the wall, student found that they ideally needed to pull the spoon back farther than 45 degrees to attain more height and less distance. We discussed how the goal of the job affects the method used to launch the catapult; had the goal been to make the marshmallow go the farthest distance, then a 45 degree angle would have been preferable. STEAM Vocabulary/Definitions accuracy : The degree of closeness of a measured or calculated quantity to its actual (true) value. For example, in the associated activity, accuracy is the ability to hit the target with the Ping-Pong ball. catapult: A toy/machine that launches a projectile. geometry: An area of mathematics that studies shape, size, position and properties of space. precision: The degree to which further measurements or calculations show the same or similar results. For example, in the associated activity, precision is the ability to hit the same location multiple times with the Ping-Pong ball. projectile: An object that is launched or thrown, usually in the air, by a force. Show students simple machines and have them divide into small groups to brainstorm how they might incorporate simple machines into their castle designs. For instance, a pulley might be used to draw water from a well as well as to control the draw bridge and portcullis. What is a simple machine? A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage (also called leverage) to multiply force. The six simple machines are: Lever Wheel and axle Pulley Inclined plane Wedge Screw This student took the assignment a step farther. After researching medieval weapons he decided to design a crossbow to defend his fortress and siege neighboring castles. He was, of course, very careful to aim his weapon at rival social studies projects and never at people. Learn all the parts of a real medieval castle and what they were used for before you begin. Look at several real castles and their floor plans before you create your own. Remember, fortresses were designed and built for defense so make sure your castle will protect the inhabitants within. The Parts of a Medieval Castle Vocabulary terms you will need to know: You will remember the vocabulary better if, after reading the definition, you click on the word. This will bring you to a picture that illustrates the word. If you are building a castle for a 7th grade social studies class your teacher will probably expect you to use these vocabulary words to label the parts of your castle. You will also be expected to demonstrate the ways in which your fortress uses these elements to protect it's inhabitants. Arrow Loops - These were slots in the walls and structures that were used to shoot arrows through. They came in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Ashlar - Blocks of smooth square stone. They can be of any kind of stone. Bailey: This is a courtyard or open space surrounded by walls.The walls that make up the Bailey are also considered to be part of the Bailey. A castle could have several. Sometimes they were called the upper bailey and lower bailey or the west bailey and east bailey. Barbican: A stone structure that protected the gate of a castle. Think of it as a gatehouse. It usually had a small tower on each side of the gate where guards could stand watch. Barmkin: A yard surrounded by a defensive wall Bartizan: A small turret at the corner of a tower or wall. It is usually at the top but not always. Bastion: A tower or turret projecting from a wall or at the junction of two walls Battlements: These are the structures at the tops of the walls surrounding a castle. Picture what you have seen in the movies where archers are at the top of the wall and firing arrows between open slots down on the attackers. These shapes at the top (Where the archers position themselves for battle) are called battlements. They are also referred to as crenellations. Buttress: A masonry projection used as additional support for walls. Notre Dame Cathedral is a good examlple of the use of Buttresses. Corbel - A stone projection from a wall. It supports the weight of a battlement. Courtyard - The open area with the curtain walls of a castle. Curtain Wall - The stone walls around a castle. Drawbridge - This was a wooden bridge in front of the main gate of the castle. In the early centuries of castles it was moved horizontal to the ground and in the later centuries it was built so it could raise up in a hinged fashion. Dungeon - A deep dark cell typically underground and underneath a castle. This is a derivative of the word Dunjon. Donjon - this is an old word for a great tower or a keep. Embrasure - An opening in a parapet wall. GateHouse - A strongly built and fortified main entrance to a castle. It often has a guard house and or living quarters. Hall or GreatHall - This is the major building inside th walls of a castle. Hoarding: a covered wooden gallery above a tower the floor had slats or slots to allow defenders to drop object on besiegers. They could also drop liquids and projectiles. Keep - This definition changed slightly over the centuries of castle building. In the early years of stone castle building the Keep was a standalone structure that could be defended and often square in shape. Over the centuries these structures were improved upon and built around. Thus a castle was made that was a larger and more complex structure. The main tower that this was built around was still called the Keep and it was usually the tallest and strongest structure in the castle. It was also used as the last line of defense during siege or attack. Machicolations - The openings between the corbels of a parapet. They form areas that stick out along the top of the wall and defenders inside the castle can drop items like boiling water and rocks onto attackers. Merlons - The parts of parapet walls between embrasures Moat: A Body of water surrounding the outer wall of a castle. It was often around 5 to 15 feet deep and it was sometimes within the outer wall -between the outer wall and the inner wall. The primary purpose of the moat wasn't to stop attackers it was to stop tunnelers. Tunneling under a castle was an effective means of collapsing the walls or infiltrating it. A moat would cause any tunnel to collapse. Motte And Bailey: This isn't part of a castle it is the predecessor to the castle. A Motte and Bailey was an early form of castle where a large mound of dirt was built up then a wooden fortification was placed on top. This wooden fortification was in the shape of a timber fence that formed a circle like a crown at the top of the mound. The Mound is the motte, and the timber fence and the space it enclosed is the Bailey. Murder Hole: An opening in the roof of a gateway over an entrance. Used to drop projectiles or other things onto the besiegers. Oubliette: A deep pit reached by a trap door at the top. Prisoners were kept in it. Palisade: A defenisive fence Portcullis - This is a metal or wood grate that was dropped vertically just inside the main gate to the castle. Postern - A small gate at the back of a castle. Often considered to be a "Back Door". Rampart: Picture the battlements in the previous definition. The battlements are the top sections of the outer wall of the castle. Now to access these battlements the archers would stand on a walk way that was a wall in it's own right. This walkway is built right up against the outer wall and is called the Rampart. Ward - The area inside the walls of a castle. Often also called the Courtyard. In 1 Samuel 8-10, we read that the leaders in Israel went to Samuel and demanded a king. This meant the people were rejecting God as their King. This made Samuel sad, but God told him to make Saul the king. These Israel Rejected God as Their King Bible activities are about this important event in Israel's history.
I am EXTREMELY excited!!!!!! My excitement stems from the fact that this upcoming Sunday begins my NEW Quarter with the KIDDOS. We are continuing to EXPLORE Bible History. We will be wearing our "Explorer Hats" and singing "We Are Bible Explorers." We do this at the beginning of each NEW Quarter. Since we left off with David and Goliath...we will be picking up with David and Jonathan. I love the story of David and Jonathan because it is truly a story of BEST friends. We learn so much about TRUE friendship when we study the friendship of David and Jonathan. Home Connection Workbook We have a few NEW additions to this Quarter's Material. I have added a "HOME CONNECTION" Workbook. I hope the Workbook will spawn more interaction between the parents and children as they review the lessons that they have learned. I am looking forward to seeing the response to the new Workbook. I will keep you posted on the reaction of both the PARENTS and the Kiddos. Memory Verse Sticker Page The inside of the Home Connection Workbook is fill with Puzzles, Memory Verse Work, Questions, etc. I have also included a Memory Verse Sticker Page....The Kiddos will place a sticker in each square IF they know their Memory Verse. Assigned on 1st Sunday Assigned on 2nd Sunday THIS is this weeks and next weeks Home Connection Workbook Pages. The Kiddos will have from Sunday to Sunday to complete the pages. (I am currently teaching each lesson for 2 weeks.) The first week we introduce the lesson...the second week we will REVIEW the lesson, making sure the KIDDOS really understood what they learned. Now on with what we will be doing during class THIS Sunday. To introduce the lesson on David and Jonathan I am going to ask the KIDDOS if they know what the meaning of the word FRIENDSHIP. We will add the word FRIEND to our WORD-WALL. I will also, ask them if they know what the word JEALOUS means. We will add that word to our WORD-WALL too. We will have several CARDS to add to our Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? WALL. Because, I like to make sure the KIDDOS can answer these questions about our lessons we have a entire WALL of our Classroom dedicated to the Who? What? When? Where? and Why? of each lesson. As we get into the story I will be using these visuals. They were easily made...I used a clip art program, a bit of manipulation of the pictures then printed and laminated them. Because, I wanted them to stand up, I stuck them to these picture easels that I bought at the Dollar Tree. I LOVE having eye catching VISUALS.... We will also be singing the song, "DAVID AND JONATHAN WERE BEST FRIENDS." by: rld. The KIDDOS will be making their OWN Quiver as their TAKE HOME project. These are made from PRINGLES and Yarn. The arrows are made from a variety of colored cardstock. Each arrow has a quality of GOOD FRIENDSHIP on it. The kiddo will color and add the stickers. I know the BOYS are going to be VERY EXCITED about this activity. :) Our Memory Verse is Proverbs 17:17. I thought this was a PERFECT MEMORY VERSE for this lesson. The KIDDOS get a MV card just like this one. They can color the picture and take it home as a reminder of the need to MEMORIZE their Memory Verse. During Class we will sing this to the tune: Frere Jacques. I have added a "NEW" place to our MAP. I added "The Stone of Ezel" which is said to be in a field between Ramah and Nob. I love having a KID friendly map up in our room. Review Game is a BOW and ARROW Game!!! Questions For Our Review Game Target For Our Review Game Our REVIEW game will surly be very exciting!!! The kiddos will get an opportunity to SHOOT an ARROW!!! My plans are for the kiddos to ANSWER one of the question from the lesson (I printed them on ARROWS to go along with the lesson.) after which they will get the opportunity to shoot an arrow at the target! (The bow and arrow are a nerf style product. I purchased it at our local Walmart.) Next Sunday we will be REVIEWING this lesson and doing our EXPLORER JOURNAL Activity!!! The Explorer Journal Activity will consist of a Picture of David and Jonathan....the Kiddos will color it and add a BOW (made out of popcicle sticks) and a small arrow. I LOVE their LOVE of their Explorer Journals. I have had parents tell me that their past Explorer Journals have become some of their FAVORITE books to look through. I love it because it takes all those projects that have a tendency to end up in the floorboard of the car or left behind in the pew and keeps them in a SPECIAL place for the children to TREASURE!
