Stev’nn Hall (previously) blends photography and painting together in an impressionistic style, often focusing his works on the rural landscapes of his Canadian home, or images of flowers he takes in his studio. The pieces are built from images shot with a 35mm camera, and feature gestures on the surface in the mediums of acrylic, ink, and pastel. These markings serve as both complements to the landscapes and abstract bits of scrawl, simultaneously pushing the underlying photograph to appear more like a painting, and Hall’s painted additions to seem like photographic errors. Kent Williams’ work melds the rigor of technical prowess with the iconoclast’s impulse to disrupt. Juxtaposing beautifully rendered classical forms with elements of abstraction and surrealism, Williams coaxes a sense of cohesion from essential contradictions. Although a virtuosic draftsman, he is concerned less with fidelity to the form than to the feeling. The result is an astonishing amalgamation of the sensual and the technical. Working in tactile surfaces and palpable brushstrokes, Williams doesn’t attempt to conceal the seams that form when joining contradictory concepts; carnal and cosmic, order and chaos, the sacred and the profane. Rather he allows us to witness the violence that occurs when two bodies collide and the beauty that can so often follow. Entanglement was commissioned as the cover art for the Criterion Collection DVD of "Women in Love".

as we near the end of the year … I thought I’d share some autumn landscapes in collage and stitch you may remember the piece above as being one of the mixed media collages I showed in a recent post (torn paper, tissue paper, chiffon, oil pastel and watercolour paint) I loosely used it as inspiration for this piece on the embellisher using a pre-felt base, I then added wool tops and strips of silk sequinned chiffons, sari silk ribbons and sari silk yarns and as I worked into it the overall shape became a bit quirky the lines of the field boundaries naturally came and it became a little fragile in places ... and I like that! I added a little machine embroidery with a metallic thread and then I cut the large piece into little pieces added some hand stitching and they became art cards and from the rest of the waxed collage pieces I made some art cards which are available in my etsy shop (they make good starting points if you need inspiration for your textile work) in September ... there were lots of bead orders but this is the only one I kept for myself ... in green, lime, gold and dark brown I like just "having" it one of my beads with hand dyed ribbons in September ... the colours I loved were a mix of golden greens and orange browns mixed with sea blues and always St. Ives inspiration came from one of my favourite artists Elaine Pamphilon I bought this card in Tate St. Ives because I love rooftops and chimneys and adore Elaine's use of colour (more on chimneys and rooftops next year) yellow morning - Elaine Pamphilon and more colour and pattern inspiration from Elaine Pamphilon on the front cover of one of her little books that I bought at The Ainscough Gallery, Dartmouth while on holiday at the beginning of September dry river bed, Hayle enjoying the autumn colours in her Cornish landscapes and the shapes and textures of the fields and trees that would so lend themselves to machine stitching *** after our holiday to Dartmouth (3-10 September) we then enjoyed the St. Ives Arts Festival (10-24 September) with various workshops and music events and on 30 September I met up with Marilyn Stephens a friend I first met at Cornwall College, Camborne when I admired her most beautiful fine art textiles at end of year exhibition we hit it off straight away and became friends we met again for lunch in St. Ives and went around the Mariners Gallery and also to The Crypt Gallery to see the work of artists Brian Busselle, Stuart Thorn and John Higgins I bought a few seasonal cards of Brian Busselle's work Borderline Kingswood Revisited we met and chatted to artist Stuart Thorn and admired his beautiful abstract paintings Stuart Thorn Clayworks a fine mix of Stuart Thorn's paintings and Jenny Beavan's ceramics Coast - Stuart Thorn such a lovely day in St. Ives - thank you Marilyn x *** on 2nd October I met up with lovely blog friend Sophie Munns of "Homage to the Seed" Sophie has a passion for seeds, pods and seedheads and has several amazing blogs and sites where she shares her art and drawings of seeds you must go visit if you share our love of these things! Sophie was over in England from Australia about to spend a week working as resident artist at The Eden Project in St. Austell, Cornwall and then a month at the Millennium Seed Bank at Kew Gardens Here is Sophie's account of our day together It was a boiling hot day, Sophie and I met outside Tate St. Ives and at the time there wasn't a show hanging so we went upstairs to the cafe and and enjoyed a pot of coffee and admired the views through the long glass windows of the Tate Cafe we visited some galleries and then we went to the The Tea Rooms for more tea and cake and then I made Sophie take her shoes off to paddle and walk on the cooling wet sand I always love to take my friends beachcombing and she laughed at me as I spotted treasures at a hundred paces Sophie gave me a copy of her book "Homage to the Seed" which I shall treasure always and then we had to say our goodbyes for, sadly Sophie only had one day in St. Ives and that's not enough ... so she had to cram in all the things she wanted to see before catching the train to St. Austell I do hope we meet again but, meanwhile, will continue to follow her inspiring and beautiful art on all of her blogs and that about brings me to the end of summer when my life turned upside down ... I had just begun work (photography and textiles) for an Exhibition with St. Ives Arts Club called "On the Island" I had already taken a large base of photos to inspire my textile pieces when I had to cancel and pull out of the exhibition because my Mum collapsed and was very ill in hospital and, just a few days later, we lost my gorgeous Nanny for quite some time life was very difficult indeed *** I still have the photos and work from "On the Island" and maybe I may use them for an exhibition in March 2012 … ochre lichen on the rocks The Island, St. Ives the colours inspired this mosaic 1. gas 2. untitled 3. sketchbook 4. sep302011 5. waves 6. 289-290 aggie 7. how do I love thee? 8. l'explorateur 9. the moorhens - 2009 and now for October ...

This week Kansas-based artist Kris Kuksi opened his fourth solo show titled Revival, at Joshua Liner Gallery. Kuksi continues his use of ornate assemblage to create wildly complex sculptures that comment on history, life, death, and spiritual conflict. In the words of director Guillermo del Toro: “A postindustrial Rococo master, Kris Kuksi obsessively arranges characters and architecture with an exquisite sense of drama. Instead of stones and shells he uses screaming plastic soldiers, miniature engine blocks, towering spires and assorted debris to form his landscapes. More
Starting with vintage photography and illustrations of models sporting fashions from the 1950s, Amsterdam-based artist Hinke Schreuders applies a rich layer of hand-stitched embroidery, beading, lace, and flourishes of ink to entirely new images that can be both unsettling and exuberant. The pieces seen here are part of an ongoing series called Works on Paper, started in 2008. With her work Schreuders says she seeks to “subtly confuse notions of feminine vulnerability and reinforce the position of embroidery as an artistic medium,” something I think we can all agree she has done masterfully. Contributor post by Lisa Solomon standing and ooohing and ah-ing and sighing at a flat file, opening drawers one by one, in new york upper east side private gallery with fellow artist jay kelly the dealer smiled, remarking "hannelore is such an artist's artist". i couldn't agree more. i know several artists who are deeply and passionately in love with her small, personal, intense collages and constructions. i was first introduced to her work by my mother in law [a talented abstract painter in her own right]. she gave me a catalogue of hannelore's work and i think my jaw simply dropped. baron was born to jewish parents in germany. they owned a fabric shop. she survived the holocaust. came to america via portugal. began making collages in her 40's after studying a significant amount of asian philosophy. she battled depression and cancer [and the dealer told us agoraphobia]. i tell you these things, but i think they are all evident in the work. her vocabulary was strong - stripes, wrapping, suggestions of human figures, string/wrapping, birds.... they all make appearances and i think are key to the internal workings and meanings of her work. i love small works. i, too, make small works because i think your relationship changes to something when you can envision holding it in your hands. but these diminutive works [most are around 8 inches or so in size] pack an incredible punch. when you actually see them in person the texture is simply divine. the overlay of materials - the snippets of found patterns, the scratchiness of the ink marks. the desperate, haunting, sad and yet still hopeful nature of these makes them some of the most compelling pieces i've ever encountered in my life [i was also lucky enough to see a show of her work at stanford ]. she also made box constructions. [obviously related to joseph cornell boxes - but perhaps a slightly more "feminine" version]. i love how she mixes materials so effortlessly. how things that might be scraps or overlooked fragments become pieces of treasure. there is an immediacy to the work - the evidence of her making a mark - confidently. her sense of placement and composition are amazing. as is her sense of color. looking at the work you can see phases - where she pairs down to grays, and reds and blacks, and neutrals. and then ochres, and pinks, the occasional blues make strong and poignant appearances. i would own practically ANYTHING of hers. seriously. i don't think i've ever seen a piece where i internally said - oh. that one isn't really so good. sure i have those that i like more than others, but really in many ways her entire body of work has stolen my heart. so for the sake of this post i'll choose one collage: and one assemblage box: until next time.... keep track of my collection on pinterest .................................. lisa solomon is a mixed media artist who lives in oakland, CA with her husband, young daughter, a one eyed pit bull, a french bulldog, a cross-eyed cat, a 3 legged cat, and many many spools of thread. she moonlights as a college professor, a graphic designer, and is a partner in MODify/d a crafty biz that up/cycles and re/purposes discards from the fashion industry.
