*This post contains affiliate links. Updated April 2023 The Girl Scouts of the USA have a rich and wonderful history. Founded by Juliette Gordon Low on March 12, 1912, the organization has touched the lives of millions of girls around the world. A woman ahead of her time, Ms. Low wanted girl to experience opportunities that they otherwise would have missed out on. In addition, the movement was very inclusive. Girls who had disabilities were able and encouraged to join-a remarkable thing back in her day. Three of the original leaders from Savannah, Georgia were Jewish and members of Congregation Mickve Israel. Of these three, Mildred Guckenheimer and Leonora Amram served on the very first Girl Scout Council. In 1917, the first African-American troop was formed and in 1921 a Native American troop was established. There is a photograph of an integrated troop dating back to 1941 in Philadelphia, and in the 1950’s, more troops became integrated. Juliette wanted girls to learn about leadership, service, and outdoor skills. In an era when women had very few options and opportunities outside the home, these were offered to girls regardless of where they lived, their faith and their abilities. In order to keep these traditions alive, your troop can earn the Girl Scout Junior Girl Scout Way Legacy badge to learn more about the rich history of Girl Scouting. Five steps are required before a child can receive her badge. Here are some ideas on how to so these steps. Photo created by the author in Canva Step 1 Match Songs to an Occasion Girls Scouts have a rich tradition with song. They sing at the end of each meeting, they sing at camporees, and they sing at ceremonies. Troops end each meeting with the classic Make New Friends: Make new friends, But keep the old. One is silver And the other’s gold. For this step, girls can learn or make up songs and teach them to younger scouts. If they are bridging to Cadettes, this is required as part of the “climb” to the next level. The level of girls that they work with are Brownies, and they can share the sisterhood of scouting with younger children who look up to girls who are heading to middle school. Another part of this step is to learn songs that the girls can sing at their actual bridging ceremony. Because they are older, they need to be an integral part of the ceremony planning. Step 2 Celebrate the Girl Scout Birthday On March 12th of each year, scouts across America celebrate the birthday of the organization. Juniors have been doing this for years, so instead of having a party as a troop meeting, they can organize a party for a younger troop. The troop can create some games for the younger troop to play, like a Juliette Gordon Low trivia game. Or else they can play some traditional games found in the Games for Girl Scouts book. Green and White Plates from Amazon Another thing that they can do for the celebration is get involved in a community service project. This is separate from the Bronze Award if they are working on it. It can be small in nature, but as the Girl Scout motto says, “Do a good turn daily.” No matter how small a project, it is part of the Girl Scout Way to make the world a better place. Green Balloons from Amazon Step 3 Share Sisterhood We tend to think of sisters as being biologically related to us, but in scouting, all of us are sisters. It is part of the traditional Promise to be a “sister to every Girl Scout”. We treat each other with kindness and respect and expect the same in return. You can get together with another Junior troop and do a Swap exchange or make Swap kits for the upcoming Council camp out. While it is nice to work with younger girls and to serve as role models for them, it is also important for the girls to work with their peers and see scouting as an experience to continue once they are finished with elementary school. If both troops are bridging to Cadettes, then they can plan a mini workshop for a younger group of Daisy or Brownie Scouts and show them what it means to work together. A final activity that your troop can do alone is to go over a vintage Junior badge book and pick one old badge and work on the requirements together. Compare what the girls used to do to what they do now! Step 4 Leave a Place Better Than You Found It Part of the Girl Scout Promise is to make the world a better place. Again, this can be a little community service project that can take place where you meet. Ask whomever is in charge of the building if there is a beautification project that can be done. If so, then the girls can tackle that and beautify their meeting place. It could be as simple as helping teachers change bulletin boards or doing a playground clean up or organizing the art teacher’s supplies for her. Step 5 Enjoy Girl Scout Traditions There are many things that are traditional to Girl Scouts. Any one of these activities qualifies as the final step to earn this tradition rich badge. This video all the Girl Scout traditions in under two minutes. Troops can learn how to do the Girl Scout Flag Ceremony. They can learn some traditional games played both indoors and outdoors. Troops can make Sit Upons for an upcoming camping trip. Groups can make S’mores, a traditional camping food. Together they can make Swaps. Photo by Hannah Gold With a history so rich in tradition, it is no wonder why many troops choose to earn the Junior Girl Scout Way badge.

*This post contains affiliate links. Updated April 2023 Camping and Girl Scouts go hand in hand. It was one of the goals of founder Juliette Gordon Low that girls learn outdoor skills-and camping with your troop encompasses the original mission statement of the movement. As Juniors, your girls should have a lot of say in planning their camping trip. Use the Junior Girl Scout Camper badge guidelines so your troop can add another skill badge to their vest or sash. Image created on Canva Step 1 Start Planning Your Adventure If your local Service Unit has a Camporee, you will probably be able to fulfill the requirements quite easily. The date has already been selected so that part is done. If your troop is going it alone, then you will have to devote a meeting to discussing this new adventure. Before the meeting, you will want to send out two dates that work for both you and your co-leaders for the parents to select for the trip. Majority has to win, because you will never find a date that works for your entire troop, and the most important schedule to be considered is yours! At your meeting, ask the girls what they want to do while they are camping. When my troop went, they wanted to learn archery and earned their Cadette badge for learning this new skill (which fulfills the second requirement). Plan your packing list and menu. To avoid drama, plan on meals that everyone will eat with a peanut butter and jelly alternative. The only thing you need to be conscious of are girls with food allergies and plan around that. In an email, send the detailed list of items needed to be packed as well as meals being served to parents. Image created on Canva Step 2 Gain a New Camping Skill This is something that your troop and you need to decide. Will there be someone with you to teach you the skill or will your co-leader and you need to be the guides for it? Step 3 Find Your Inner Camp Chef It is not unreasonable to ask the girls to cook their own meals, after all, this is one of the reasons you go camping! You can Google for hours or you can pick up one of these inexpensive cookbooks and have the girls help select the recipes according to their tastes and skills. Girl Scout Camping Meal Planner for All Kinds of Eaters and All Scout Levels I created this guide because there is a lot of debate on how to handle the different likes and dislikes that the girls in your troop have. The girls need to be fed in order to have the energy to camp. This meal planning guide can be done with your girls. Available on Teachers Pay Teachers Or your girls can put together a Foil Meal. Available on Amazon The third choice is to make a Meal on a Stick, which can be a hot dog or S'mores. This cookbook covers all kind of cooking styles. Available on Amazon Step 4 Try a New Activity Again, this is something to discuss and vote on during your meeting. Then arrange for it to happen! Step 5 Head Out on Your trip and Have Some Nighttime Fun You troop finished all of the activities. Dinner and snacks are done. Night has fallen. What's next? Night activities! Here are some items to have on hand. Glow Sticks Pack of 448 Pieces Available on Amazon Here are some glow stick and flashlight games for you to try: 50 Glow Stick Games Glow Stick Tic-Tac-Toe More Glowing Activities Need bulk flashlights for your girls? *This post contains affiliate links. Updated April 2023 There are many fun activities that your troop can do to earn the Brownie Girl Scout Making Friends badge. When all of the girls get along with each other, meetings run more smoothly and everyone, including the leaders, enjoy their time together more. Image from Pixabay and used by the author in Canva You may want to open the meeting by talking about what makes a good friend. Brainstorm ideas and list them on the board or a piece of poster board. There are many books about friendship that you can read to the girls as a springboard for earning the Making Friends badge. A Available on Amazon This is one if the best children's book series ever written. These short, sweet stories that teach valuable lessons. The illustrations are hilarious. Frog and Toad Are Friends is another classic from children's literature that has withstood the test of time. One short story from this anthology is enough to have girls get the idea of how important friends are. Available on Amazon. Another thing your co-leader and you can do is bring in a few photos of yourself and a friend that you still keep in touch with. The younger you are, the better your girls will enjoy it! Tell them a story about your friendship through the years and why this person is so important to you. Step 1 Make a Friendly Introduction (game) The first thing your co-leader and you need to do is help the girls learn how to make a proper introduction. As adults, we have all experienced being introduced to a new person and then quickly forget that person's name! Here is how to properly introduce yourself. 1. Teach girls to do a proper handshake (firm, not floppy) With COVID-19, how about elbow touch or just a wave 2. Look a person in the eye and say "Hello. I'm (your name). 3. The other person will respond, "I'm _______." 4. The first girl repeats the other person's name and says, "Nice to meet you, ______." Have the girls do this with you, your co-leader, or a few of the other girls. Then it is time for the game. There are many online "Getting to Know You" bingo games available. A search of this in images will lead you to several different ones or use Pinterest to find one. Download the one that will work best for your troop and make a copy for each girl. Then have them play until someone gets a Bingo. Step 2 Show Friends You Care (craft) This gift that the girls are be making will be shared with someone who is NOT in your troop. Feelings will get hurt if girls start making this for others and someone does not have a person making a gift for her. \ Materials Hinged wooden box Foam brushes Modge Podge Scrapbook or tissue paper Construction paper Markers Mints Lifesavers Sweet Tarts candy Paper plates A sheet of paper you have prepared that says the following: "We were "mint" to be friends" "You are a "Lifesaver'" "I think you are a 'Sweet tart'" The girls then choose a color scheme and Modge Podge the crafting paper onto the box. When they are done, have the girls cut out the sayings and tape them to the piece of candy. Then have them put them in the box. Place on a paper plate to carry out after the meeting. Image created by the author in Canva Step 3 Share a Favorite Activity In small groups, give the girls a chance to share one thing they enjoy doing. If possible, see if they can give a short demonstration. Step 4 Learn How to Disagree Photo from imagerymajestic at freedigitalphotos.net There is an art to learning how to disagree with another person without hurting their feelings. Even though we all know adults who have yet to master this, as Girl Scout leaders, it is important for us to teach this to our girls. As they get older and meetings become more girl led, they need to learn how to speak to each other without putting the other person's idea down. With your co-leader, demonstrate the right way to disagree and the wrong way to disagree. (you can be humorous but not insulting). Divide the girls into pairs. Then hand each set of girls a chocolate bar. They have to disagree over who gets it and why. Then they have to figure out a compromise. Have the girls share their results and them let them eat the chocolate! Step 5 Practice Friendship (game) Honestly, most girls practice this each and every day. Unless there is some underlying issue and the girl really has no friends, each child interacts with others every single day. You can find a game to play in one of my favorite Girl Scout resources, Games for Girl Scouts. Here are some other resources for games to play for the final activity to earn the Making Friends badge. Friendship Games Youth Group Games Friendship Activities Pinterest Board What has your troop done to earn the Brownie Making Friends badge?

*This post contains affiliate links. Updated April 2023 As the girls in your troop get older, they will be able to take on more and more responsibility. One of the things they may already be doing is caring for a younger sibling for a short while when Mom or Dad are running a quick errand. But what if something happens while on their watch? Earning the Junior First Aid badge is one way for girls to be prepared. Step 1 Learn the Steps to Be Prepared This is a fairly quick and simple step to do. Have the girls create a small chart on a half piece of white construction paper. In red marker, they need to write these steps: Check-See to see if it is safe to check on the person. Then see if the person can talk or respond Call-911 Care-Stay as calm as possible and ask another person to get an adult if one is not around the immediate area This chart can be placed by the phone at home or on the refrigerator. Step 2 Talk to First Responders and Step 4 Find Out How to Handle Urgent First Aid Issues Ask a first responder, like a police officer, to speak to your girls as one of the steps to earn the Junior First Aid badge. Photo from Pixabay Find out if there is someone in your troop community who can talk to the girls about what it is like to be on the scene of an emergency. If you cannot find someone and you meet in a school, ask if the school nurse can stay a bit extra and be a special guest at your meeting. She or he has certainly had emergencies over the years and s/he can talk to the kids about what to do if something happens at home or at school. Include questions about how the girls should handle urgent issues to combine the fourth step with this one. Step 3 Make a Portable First Aid Kit If your girls did this as Brownie Girl Scouts, then they may not have it anymore. Even if they do, you can make a different version of the kit for them to take camping or to keep in their school backpack or Girl Scout bag. Parents can even keep this in the glove compartment of their car. The key to creating this particular kit is to make it portable, so it needs to be small. Similar Four Pack Available on Amazon This colorful set of travel soap containers comes in a 4 pack. The perfect vessel for this kit is a travel soap container. Inside you can place: Band Aids in different sizes Individual packets of a topical antibiotic Q-Tips for applying the ointment Individual packets of moist towelettes or alcohol wipes Have the girls write “First Aid” in Sharpie on the top. Step 4 Find Out How to Handle Urgent First Aid Issues Lots of kids have peanut or other life threatening allergies. Do a "Peanut Drill" on what the girls should do if someone in class has a reaction. One girl should run to the nurse, one runs to the office, one goes to the teacher next door, etc. Image created by the author on Canva Step 5 Know How to Take Care of Someone Who is Sick Talking to the girls about how to make others feel better when they are sick is one step in earning the Junior First Aid badge. Ask the girls what their parents or caretakers do to help them feel better when they are sick. Tell the girls what you and your co-leader do for their daughters, and what your parents did for you. Has any of this changed over the years?
