Exploring how to get a 1930s look on a budget by looking at the 1930s retrospective trend during the 1970s, inspired by Hollywood films
In my mind, there’s nothing more stylish than a woman dressed in “men's” clothes. Pants, ties, tweed blazers, brimmed hats, leather boots... It seems crazy now to think that pants didn’t become a mainstay (or even a component) in a woman’s wardrobe until the late 19th century. Women also pillaged their husbands closet for pants when they entered the workforce while “the men were away” during World War II. It wasn’t really until the 1970s that pants were thought to be “fashionable” though *(there are definitely early style icons such as Katharine Hepburn, Coco Chanel, and Marlene Dietrich who rocked menswear in the 1930s). A couple of my favorite websites that focus on women rocking ”menswear” and the tomboy look are Wearing The Pants and Tomboy Style. Both are a great source of inspiration if you’ve been wanting to infuse your wardrobe with some boyish flair. Wearing The Pants is a Tumblr that boasts over a year’s worth of archived photos to gobble up and Tomboy Style is a blog run by the lovely Lizzie Garrett (author of the popular new book by the same name!) featuring short interviews with creative women, vintage photos of stylish tomboys with links to clothing so you can “get that look,” and just basically everything your little tomboy-heart desires from a style-site. I like how Lizzie Garrett describes the tomboy look on her site: “To define a tomboy requires far beyond the simple notion of wearing boys’ clothing. Tomboys have influenced the expanses of popular culture including fashion, film, music and literature. And although the tomboy is often identified by clothing, what makes her wholly so is an inherent sense of confidence, rebelliousness, and adventure.” Well put Lizzie. I’ve also started a Pinterest board titled “Keep it Classic” with over a hundred pins of my favorite vintage-y menswear looks. Below are some of my favorite images from these three links. Little is know about Nina Leen, the Russian born photographer that emigrated to the United States, and whose photos graced over 50 Life magazine covers. What is known is that she studied painting in Berlin, and that she also lived in Italy and Switzerland--but when she died in 1995, there wasn't even anybody who knew her exact age.

The economic transformations of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought about further changes in men's and women's roles. Work was less likely to be done in the home, as fewer and fewer Americans lived on farms, and men left the home to work in offices and factories. Men assumed sole responsibility for the financial support of the family, becoming the breadwinners, a term coined in the early 19th century. Married women were not supposed to work for wages, and were considered too pure and innocent to be out in the working world. Women were supposed to devote themselves to domestic duties, and children were seen as young innocents who needed a mother's protection. Fathers had less and less to do with raising their children. Although the 19th-century ideal held that married women were not supposed to work, women did contribute to the family's well-being. Wealthy women planned formal dinners, balls, and other social gatherings that were crucial to their husbands' political and business success. Middle-class women sewed for what they called pin money, small amounts that frequently balanced the family budget. Married women in the middle and working classes took in boarders, sold hot lunches or pastries to neighbors, and saved money by doing their own baking, brewing, gardening, and other chores. It was also common in middle- and working-class families for sons to be sent to school, while their teenage sisters supported this schooling by working in a factory, teaching in elementary schools, or taking in sewing. Such work was considered acceptable as long as it was either done in the house or by unmarried young women. Many 19th-century American families did not fit into this nuclear family ideal, as it was expensive. High housing costs meant more people than just the nuclear family often lived under one roof. Extended families, including grandparents and other relatives, were most numerous in the mid-19th century. Immigrants clung to traditional extended-family forms, and poorer families often included grandparents, grandchildren, and sometimes aunts and uncles in order to maximize sources of income and save on rent.
